I kind of wish he (they/channels) wouldn’t, it takes me out of the experience. Like yourself all I can think is that it’s a lot of work for a staged scene and I don’t like staged reality for the most part. That’s just me though, Luke will do Luke and we’re good with that.

Paul Keating I see your point but if I’m being honest I like the current camera work even though it’s more work on Luke I like the different angles and perspective he provides especially during the gear review episodes. But I can see your point as well.

Luke, I really appreciate your reviews and videos. Very useful information. You've mentioned your daughter, Maddie (sp). My little girl's name was Maddie. She was my buddy, and she loved to be outdoors with me. I lost her to cancer five years ago. I try to spend as much time outdoors now in her honor. Thanks again for the videos, bro.

My man was out here making chill friendly camping videos and WARNING PEOPLE ABOUT LONG COVID in *MAY* of 2020. Absolute legend. Thank you! It's not mentioned enough that the 1918 Flu had wide-ranging aftereffects that persisted for years after initial infection, if not for the rest of someone's life. Reduced educational attainment, physical disability, lower income and socioeconomic status, encephalitis lethargica, and elevated all cause mortality.

Never ceases to amaze me how often the military blows it, when it comes to providing it's troops with gear like this. When I served in the 70's, we went so far as to buy our own socks (anything that wouldn't show) for duty during the cold weather months. They've made a lot of improvements since then, but it looks like they still aren't talking to people who spend much time using this type of gear. With all the money the military spends, I would think they would just ask a company like Z-pack to make them a military version (camouflaged sol-poly) of one of their tents/tarps.

When the UK guys on reserve started hearing about the second go in Iraq,there was a lot of growling about having to buy usable equipment themselves because issue kit was so old it fell to pieces, I’m talking about unused kit that the stitching fell apart on.
@sgtcrabfat
@sgtcrabfat 3 роки тому
Was the same over here in the UK in the early 2003, my wife even went to the local army surplus to buy kit to send out to me in Basrah, eg sun hats, sun glasses, I thought there may be shortages so took my own stuff too, eg coolmax socks, found out you can wear them for two weeks non stop, not enough water to wash clothes in, so bathed with wet wipes and alcohol gel ( medic here ) saying that, 2007 Afghanistan, had more than enough kit, good stuff too, eg camelback and did not have to hand it all in, the Osprey system was one of the best but it was heavy in that heat, anyway, all the best .

Lowest bidder gets the contract. Anyone can submit a plan for a piece of military hardware. Design a good tent, find a United States manufacturer, get the cost way way down, submit a proposal to DOD. That’s how all military gear improves.
@CptnSavage

I'm retired army [9/92] and the issue kit was CRAP! I always felt that the generals and colonels should be forced to go out for a mont using the issue gear just like the privates to see what crap we were getting to get them to improve the gear we were issued. Same goes for the food. Rear eschelon wieners get much better food and it doesn't come in a bag!

In Australia we get a tree along the river banks known as a a ghost gum and they are known to drop limbs for no reason, especially in summer. All you hear is the crack and down comes 40kg of branch. I can remember once on a camp telling someone about the trees and warning them to move their camper trailer. They brushed the risk off and about an hour after dusk when it cooled down came a monster and took the trailer out. Looked like something out of a cartoon.

The 'vulcano' stove (Bordeflasche, Gebirgskocher der Schweizer Armee) is made of aluminum and will not withstand glowing coals! It is not designed to be used as a hobo, instead you should use a (small) alcohol or gel stove inside it (Notkocher 71) Sticks and twigs shouldn't be a problem, just don't expect to use it long term or as a 'heater'.

Watching you walk up that log reminds me of a time I was fishing with a friend on a river in the Cascades. We were working our way up stream along the bank. There was an old fir log laying parallel to the stream. My friend, thinking he'd hop up on that log and make his travel a bit easier did so. On his third step he punched through the log as it was rotten he went up to mid thigh of both legs. Unbeknownst to him, the log was housing a huge yellow jacket nest. Needless to say he had created some serious unrest within the community of hornets. His only saving grace was that he was able to jump straight into the stream and wash most of them off. He was stung about 50 times on both legs. Since that day I have always been leery of walking on old logs.

Hey there buddy! Do I assume that, your military tent is made out of canvas? For years starting out in the Boy Scouts, various youth groups, etc,...canvas tents were the,"IN THING". We found them heavy and bulky, yet held up against insane winds! Then there was the condensation and rain fall?!? The first couple times out we camped with the buddy system. Two bodies per tent. Knowing what happens when you touch any part of the tent in wet weather, one just opened a portal for dripping water! We would set up the tent and then run a string around the inside paremeter in a rectangle shape tied off to stable sticks. In those days the tents did not have a floor. We would then lay down an extra large plastic ground cloth and brought the sides up and attached to the rectangle! We never touched the inner tent, we had a dry interior, and a very cool wind block! Of coarse realizing all the work involved we did some research and learned how to oil the canvas....DUH! Solved all the problems! Anyways.... thanks for taking me along on your excursion! John

I'm enjoying your videos, thank you. If I can make two suggestions in regards to the use of MREs... 1st, put the water in the heater then immediately the food to be heated before the heater gets too hot to handle. 2nd, slit the MRE packet lengthwise, not across the top. Much easier to eat with the reduced depth. I cradle the heated pouch with a bandana or a shirt sleeve for comfort. The issued spoon can reach without messing up your hand or clothing.

MRE tip: if you want to get extra power from the flame less ration heater. Put half the iodized salt from the salt package in the heater then add maybe a touch extra water but not too much, then shake it hard to mix the salt . Put the heater inside the cardboard sleeve , then out the meal pouch in the sleeve outside the heater not inside like you probably are used to. Let it vent enough but keep the top of the heater rolled so it only vents a bit but doesn’t inflate. Doing it this way allows you to easily slip the meal pouch in and out so you can turn and flip it as it heats . The extra power for the salt really makes a big difference too and you’ll have evenly heated piping hot meals . You can even add all the salt and put a second item on the other side of the heater in the cardboard sleeve. Remember to turn them every 4 or 5 min.

Luke, your channel has been a great reference and inspiration for camping and general adventuring out there in the world. When it comes to MREs, yeah... some of them really suck in terms of taste, but really, they're great to do what they intend to do: keep you from starving. A couple cool tricks for you in the future if you haven't tried it yet; use the drink pouch to keep small papers or maps dry. Also, if you don't use the heating element for a meal, put about half the normal amount in, put it back in the overpouch and, BAM! you have a nice way to keep your core warm for easily over 5 hours in cold weather. Keep up the great work and best wishes for your daughters safe return!

I remember the winter overnighter when the snowstorm blowing in. Awesome video that one. The nest you showed is the nest of a dirt dauber wasp. They are about 1” long and black. They look evil, but they are not.

That song you sang a little of is my favorite CCR song. Folgers is good coffee. But now I drink McCafe. Love it. And wasn't that a dirt dauber nest?

Is that a sign at 3:38 on the tree above your head to the right? 17:40 That is a true bushcraft shelter! Sourced from materials near by and built with your own two hands. I think it was great shelter ! Anyway, thanks for sharing man!

Menu # 10 chilli mac is the best. Especially if you can trade your cheese spread for jalapeno cheese spread. Heat both of them up and mix together. Best meal ever...well when your army hungry.
