I’m so terrified to use fixatives on my drawings but they are starting to get wax bloom on them so I’ve been looking and looking and seeing your video really helped a lot with my decision. Thank you! Also, does it need to be stored at a certain temperature? I read somewhere that if not used frequently and not stored properly they can damage the drawing, thanks again! ✨✨

As to Spectrafix, use an iron on your warped papers - many watercolorists do this with our finished paintings.

Have you used an iron before with colored pencil drawings? I can imagine it melting and destroying the drawing.

Once I sprayed more fixative on one of my portrait sketch to make it uniform. After couple of months the darker areas especially the hair became brittle and peeled out of paper. It was krylon fixative.

Sorry that happened to you, I wonder if it was a bad batch of fixative, or you used a different kind? I use only the workable fixative from krylon with my drawings and it's been good to me.

No, they are different, one side has a smoother finish with less fine toothed texture than the other.

I would highly avoid wax fixatives for colored pencil, wax does something called "blooming", which is like a frosting effect that happens as it ages and will cause the shadows of drawings to look lighter and dull, this will drastically hurt a drawings longevity. Wax based pencils have issues with wax bloom already, any more wax would surely make it worse. I recommend using any other fixative instead, and to spray any drawings done with wax based colored pencils as soon as the drawing is complete to prevent any wax bloom.

Apparently, if you get the spectrafix concentrate and mix the spray yourself, you can adjust the formula to add more alcohol and less water so it dries faster and doesn't warp the paper as much. Also, what is that board you have your drawings taped to? Is that just something you got from the hardware store?

That's cool that spectra fix offers that, but it sounds too complicated to have to do that, I will just stick to the easiest option of Krylon. The board I am suing is just pressed particle board, you can get it at a hardware store, or you can get acrylic sheets which is better.

I have been testing Degas Fixative as a sort of solvent. Applying between layers with a brush. Interestingly, I have found this fixative works to make colors more opaque than gamsol solvent over bristol vellum. I am still testing before applying it to a working piece, but I wonder if anyone else has used this fixative in this kind of way. Side note: I also tested other things like adhesive liquid (removes pigment but damages paper), and fixative mixed with gum ar (worst result for blending opacity). Also, this fixative does not work over waterproof ink, which would have made testing easier.

Would the workable fixative be considered a finishing spray so that you could mount artwork on a board and hang without glass? That’s what I am in search of. Also, does this work for Polychromos? Thank you!

It can be used as a finishing spray, which is what I use it for, but I'm not sure how well it would work as a finish for display without glass. It is a textured, finish which will be likely to collect more dust over time as opposed to glass or a finish that is smoother. So I probably wouldn't use it for that.

It's PRO Artists tape, you can use any brand of artists tape though.

I've never heard of that brand of spray, whatever spray you decide to use, make sure you do like a scribble drawing on a separate piece of paper and test the spray on that before you spray your drawing. That way if it ruins anything it won't be your drawing. I use the Krylon workable fixatif that I show in the video, I love it for my colored pencil drawings.
