This is it folks, my review of the OneTigris Scaena Tent.
This is one very interesting shelter as it features a design that hasn't been seen before.
In this Agenda Free Review Luke is going to share this thoughts about this tent, the pros and cons, and his experiences with using this tent in all sorts of conditions.

Review Pros :
Very unique design - I’ve never seen anything like it before. The partial fly, the way that the floor pulls out on one side - it’s unique.
Very well made tent for the money.
The quality is very good with no issues being found with the seam taping, the stitching or so on.
Large tent that offers plenty of space for 2 people and their gear. Users can sit up while inside of the tent.
Plenty of pockets
Ventilation is very good in most situations. Lots of mesh.
Condensation is possible in any tent if the conditions are right for it but with that being said, it is well controlled in this tent and has not been an issue during my testing.
Pack size and weight aren’t bad considering the amount of space that the tent offers.
I like the colors of this tent - it looks cool. Earth tones for the win.
Excellent materials - ripstop nylon, aluminum poles - not a delicate polyester.
The Setup and Breakdown of the tent is easy and straightforward and shouldn’t give you any problems.
Review Cons :
Design : While I have not had any leaking from this tent, it is possible due to the funky design. That is my biggest gripe with this tent; the fly design is strange and in the end, only creates a problem for the user.
With the internal fly, it behaves just as a 4th season tent does; the fabric blocks wind and keeps out with drafts and with a full fly, these panels could be used to control the amount of airflow coming into a tent to a great degree while blocking out falling and blowing moisture.
Leaking : Ok, I mentioned that I haven’t had any leaking and I have had it out in as heavy of rain events that I think anyone would ever camp in but that doesn’t mean that others haven’t had issues and it doesn’t mean that leaking isn’t possible because it is.
While I was testing this tent out, some of my viewers were as well and this is what we have learned together.
The way that you seal up the door on the side of the tent without the fly will ultimately determine whether the tent leaks in calmer conditions. It’s all about the zippers; if they aren’t seated just right, water can make its way into the tent.
Because of this, it is advised that you get in the tent from the side with the fly if wet weather is possible, that way you can ensure that the zippers are in the right place.
Also - In very windy conditions, water can be blown between the panels and leaking is possible.
The quick to deploy hasty shelter is just about worthless. There is no reason to do it other than a bit of sun protection. It will not keep moisture out because there is no door on one size.
The single vestibule doesn’t offer all that much space - luckily the tent is larger than your average 2 person tent and makes up for the small vestibule.
Tent stakes are rather small and may need to be replaced depending on the type of soil that you are setting the tent up on.

I still think Dark Helmet from Space Balls made a tent every time I see it. I do like the idea of the sun shade, it could make a good beach tent during the summer if it came in lighter colors.

So I actually got this based on your review, when Amazon dropped the price for a couple of days. Took it out this past weekend and have my own report: --I was actually lucky enough to get this put up right before a thunderstorm that dropped about an inch of rain in an hour and had 20-30 mph winds. The tent held up like a champ; like you, after the rain let up I was shocked that not a single drop of water got in, and I actually didn't even have the rainfly as snug as I should have, nor did I have the guylines attached. Whatever OneTigris did to design that internal fly, it's very effective in heavy rains, although I can't speak to how well it would hold up if the winds were going at 50 mph or more. --Because of the internal fly, the tent can get pretty stuffy if you want to zip up the "Dark Helmet" sections. I'm not sure if the Cosmitto has better ventilation because the mesh is on all four sides, but on this trip at least it wasn't enough to cause condensation. --I know you've used this as a two-person tent, but it seems pretty snug for two people. I'd say it's more accurate that it's a "1.5 person" tent. One person can put in a pad and have plenty of room for their gear. With two people, getting in and out of the tent seems like it would be a pain on the internal fly side, with no vestibule you'd have to reach across the tent to get your shoes, and the gear space drops to just the mesh lofts. --Setup and takedown was a breeze, even for a very inexperienced camper like me, once I figured out the poles. Overall, this is weird but functional tent that's perfect for one-person weekend getaways and maybe even week-long trips. For two people, I'd probably go with a 3 or 4-person Teton Sports Mountain Ultra since you can pull the rainfly out on all four sides, and there would be plenty of space to both sleep and to exit the tent on either side.

I recently purchased this tent. Great for the price. I've used it twice and love it so far. The biggest headache thus far is set up. As you noted, keeping the poles in the gromets is a pain and setting this tent up on a windy day is next level frustrating. Beyond that, so far a great purchase and appreciated your advise on it.

I purchased this tent after seeing your review. I also have to agree 100% with everything you mentioned in this review. I was wondering how ants found their way inside the tent. It would also be awesome if OneTigris made a full fly for it. If OneTigris does watch this video, make a full fly for the Scaena tent. So far I'm enjoying this tent, simple to setup and tear down and decently compact.

5:42, That was my first impression, I love the colors, nice and drab as to blend into or camouflage it. IMO, there is nobody that a camper wants to announce his presence to such as other campers or park rangers/wildlife/fish/game authorities, etc. I'm new to this but don't understand why many of the tents I see come in colors loud enough to be seen from google satellite street views.

About the small hole in the corner where the two zippers meet, why not just pull the cords tied to the zipper inside as you close them? They wouldn't 100% plug the hole, but damn close! You could also add a small piece of cord tied to one of the zipper just for that purpose, leaving the others as pull cords to pull the zipper. Also, about the poles coming out of the grommets as you setup the tent, just use two black paper clips (the ones that pinch) to hold the tip of the pole going through the grommets until you can insert the ones on the other side. It's lite and easy to carry and can be used as laundry clips later to hang stuff to dry so it's not useless once you're done.

Great review as always. Been watching the reviews on this particular tent from the beginning. Was surprised when it past your waterproof torture test. Considering purchasing this tent but your cons are well stated. I live in California and the current configuration would work well for me. It seems like it’s more of a three season tent in it’s current configuration. The rear of the tent is flat and allows for a full fly setup. The front of the tent protrudes from the lower area not exactly allowing for the full fly configuration. If OneTigris would address the zipper gap issue and either manufacture a full fly configuration with the tent or offer it as an accessory (maybe a zip on) I would buy this tent in a heartbeat. It’s going to be interesting to see if OneTigris takes into consideration the drawbacks. Definitely staying tuned in…

I like that you mentioned that nylon fabric is stronger than a polyester fabric of the same size thread, weave, and coating (implied, but not directly stated). Nylon fabric DOES absorb more water if the coating of both is on the inside, and DOES stretch more than polyester when wet, and DOES degrade more quickly when exposed to long-term sunlight, but backpackers usually look for shade in warmer weather and don't leave it up in sunlight for days at a time. A full rainfly option (possibly in a lighter color) would be a good decision on One Tigris' part. Thanks, Luke. Excellent report!

HI. Just as an update to the tent performance in moderate rain. I have found that the zipper fabric on the lower part of the triangular mesh door, becomes wet on the inside. It appears OneTigris are aware of this issue, because they have included a reversed flap under the inside of the front door, attached to the main body with velcro. Forms a bit of a trough to catch any water. Kind of a shame they didn't just use waterproof zips. It didn't "leak" in the rain, just this wet zipper. I will try using NikWax on the zip and maybe some seam sealer on the storm flap, meant to be protecting the zip. Its the same flap that Luke is concerned about, if you don't close the zipper properly and leave the zipper cord hanging down through the outside drainage hole. Thanks Luke. My best to you and Susie. :) PS: Just to say, I have found out why the zipper gets wet inside. They have sewn the internal fly and the mesh, directly onto the zipper fabric, with no sealing whatsoever. So the rain just runs down into the stitching and through the zip fabric.

Years ago, we used to add waterproofing to our tent with a product called Camp Dry. An aerosol product you spray on the tent fabric let dry and you're ready for the next camping trip. I believe I benefited from using this product by adding a few years more of use to our tent by periodically applying the treatment. Camp Dry worked on Pop-Up camper fabric also. Maybe the newer fabrics used in modern tents can do without treating.

Haven't seen this in person, but it looks like the design is to maximize air flow when it isn't raining while allowing rain protection with an internal fly should a rain storm pop up. And then the fly can be utilized without getting out of the tent. A full rain fly would not allow that. So, maybe your idea of an optional full rain fly is best. If you know you live in a wet area or you know rain is expected, take the full fly. If not, take it as designed and enjoy the flow through air. Great review.

I prefer this fly to the little square bit of fly material that many tents have incorporated for the top of their tents. They always look like they will leak or just blow away. Personally, I prefer a full tarp/fly for overall protection but can see this being a nice addition if camping in summer months with little chance of rain. My biggest con on it is the HH rating of just 3000. Living in Scotland I would want a higher rating to make it more year round friendly as we can have 4 seasons in one day with Scottish weather.

Great video and thorough testing! It’s obviously a very different design, but isn’t the Army’s improved combat shelter another partial fly design, since the “front” side just has the blackout panel of the tent body that unzips inside? I’m not aware of any water problems with that one, but I’d be interested to hear if you have. Thanks!

I live in a desert so rain would not be much of an issue . I think they should offer a larger fly as an Up grade or as an after market up grade for those who need larger or 2 vestibules or live in a rain forest . If you are not back packing with this tent then a tarp might solve most of the cons . If you are an over lander this would be probably the most perfect tent for you.

Luke, I for one, am the type of person that likes to use a tarp as an extension, porch cover if you will. So with that in mind, I don't see an issue if the tarp is on the side with the internal fly to keep water from coming in through the zipper as you mentioned. I agree that an add on vestibule, available as an extra, that could be used as a porch or overhead, like on the Backwoods Bungalow or Outback Retreat, for the open side of the tent would be an excellent addition from OneTigris. What are your thoughts?

Innovation and thinking "outside of the box' is great, as long as it serves a purpose. What exact purpose does the internal fly really provide? Does it provide a significant improvement or feature or is it just "neat"? Looks like OneTigris has the foundation of a great piece of gear, they just need to focus on features that increase protection, comfort, and improve the user's experience.

Hey Hoss! I hope you and yours are doing well. OneTigris used to be a good company. They all have issues, but this use of two separate zippers butting up to one another is just lazy and ill-conceived. Having said that, I'd love to a episode of "all time best" . You just may get too many responses. Thanks for doing what you do. Always a good watch! Best!

it is interesting because you may have a decent view from the inside, which normally doesn't happen with other tents, but then again it opens up to water getting inside. My thoughts are: They should have fixed the Kosmito instead of redesign it, and add some clear mylar windows (heck, transparent mylar is used on high end sport kites, much more expensive than a tent) This is why most of the time i still prefer de good old A frame tents (AKA canadian tents where i live)

After this review, think I'll stick to plans to get the MSR Elixir 2. Already own 2 other one tigris tents so not downer on the company in general. What is it with one tigris and zips though? The bug net insert I got for the homestead has exactly the same problem with gap in the zip. Kind of a pointless bug net if theres a space for bugs to get through.

Like everything about this tent but a full fly would give me more confidence.

What do you think of some of the modern tents moving to polyester? I've seen Dan Durston (would love to see you review an x-mid btw) make some compelling arguments for ripstop polyester over nylon.

I firmly believe that the weight one carries will impact greatly on the quality and performance in a hiking situation.anything above 1 kg for a tent is for me,the past.yes it has its place if you carry your gears by car or bike but for long distance hiking,i ll go dcf, even in alpine conditions.its strong,100%waterproof and of course ultralight.

I have question. Can you build flysheet first and then iner mesh? In case you have to tent up in the rain this would be a massive advantage.

Great review! I'm from the UK & have bought the One Tigris Bungalow tent 2 wks ago. Not really practical for the unpredictable weather here....BUT....I love it! lol. This is as you said a radical & interesting design. I kinda think it has huge potential.
