========= Livgardet LYRICS =========
I frid

As a history geek I grew up with stories of the past, the days when Finland and Sweden were one kingdom. Although we are now two distinct nations and states, I still feel all this is part of my heritage too, and it's great to see it represented this way. Hälsningar från Finland, länge leve kungen!

We are brothers, with 700 years of shared history. I view all finns as honorary swedes, as even though finland is an indipendent state, the finnish and swedish blood strewn on the battlefield to protect it from its enemies consecrates that bond, and the sacrefice of the finnish should never be forgotten. terveisiä Ruotsista, eläköön isänmaa!

I think Finns still bow too deeply towards the old occupiers. It wasn't Sweden that gave Finland it's independency. In fact they just ditched Finland to the Russian Emperor. Made Finns fight in their wars and didn't even bother to fight with them as a country when they needed it the most. Most Finns don't even know what their heritage is before the times of Swedish occupation. It's sad really.
@Kuuranpoika
@Kuuranpoika 3 роки тому
@@Ghostiification Yes, it's true Finnish tribes existed before we became part of Sweden, and they had their own culture. Those tribes got cultural and christian influence from both east and west. However, it is quite hard to say what this land would look like without Sweden. Would those tribes have been able or even interested in forming a common identity and unified state in its current form? Would they have been able to avoid military conflicts by themselves, and if not, would it have been any easier without troops from the western side of the kingdom? Much of our land as it currently is was built during the Swedish era: many cities/towns, churches and castles. Finland was an integral part of Sweden, just like Uusimaa, North Karelia and Ostrobothnia are now part of the Republic of Finland. I very much doubt an independent Finland would exist today without all those centuries as part of Sweden, and even if it did, it would most likely look drastically different. Of course it's possible that Finland would have gotten more influence from the Danes or Germans, like Estonians did. Like I wrote, it's quite hard to know.
@stalin4143
@stalin4143 3 роки тому
@@Ghostiification whoah, now hold on a minute. Sweden never ditched finland, they lost 70 thousand men to defend her from the russians. After that war sweden remained neutral for 140 years, so when the soviets came knocking the governments hands were effectivly tied. I agree that sweden should have intervened and declared war on the soviets as a respons, but the fault lays on our government at the time. As for the cultural "loss" of the finns as a result of being a part of the swedish empire, such loss is expected from any peoples living under a nation which holds another culture as the predominent one. You stated that most finns dont remember what the cultural heritage before sweden was, well the same thing can be said of most cultures. As we know barely anything of the culture of the scandinavian bronze age for example, or the culture during viking times, save for scant records. So dont lay the blame on sweden for that. Lastly i dont expect any finn to bow down to swedes or sweden, merely to recognize that it and they helped shape finland into the beautiful nation it is today.

This is a really interesting piece. The music is actually a Silesian folk song with origins from Franz Liszt's oratorio the Legend of Saint Elizabeth. The earliest record of it is from 1842 when August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben put it to religious text calling it: Most Beautiful Lord Jesus. It is most often sung as a hymn in many Christian churches. This is the first time I've heard the tune used with such a fast, hard pace with heavy metal. It is very appealing.

@@Criseteno Great point. I just looked it up, and yes it is the same. The tempo is just faster here. I didn't realize that it was also a Christmas carol; thanks for pointing that out. It appears to have been written (at least the lyrics) by Bernhard Severin Ingemann, the Danish poet.

He is today seen as the founding father of Sweden*, since he took us out of the Danish controlled Calmar Union. Motivated by Stockholms bloodbath and his own fathers execution, Gustav Vasa went to Dalarna (Dalecarlia) to seek support and rally troops to take back Stockholm from the Danes. He was given 16 men in 1521 as life guards. In 1523 he rode in to Stockholm and was crowned king. His life guards were made into the royal guards and exist to this day. They still stand outside Stockholm castle guarding the current king just like they have with every king since Vasa. The life guard is not only the oldest but also the most decorated combat unit in Sweden. They always joined the king to battle and achieved many impressive feats. *It is however argued by most historians that Birger Jarl (200 years earlier) is the real founding father of Sweden. I personally agree with this but we still learn more about Vasa in school as children since there is more written about him and Birger Jarl was never actually king. Vasa also did three noteworthy things: Liberated us from the Danes, made us Lutheran, and made the crown inheritable. Before him kings were actually elected. Vasa was also the grandfather of Gustavus Adolphus. Of course there are more to this so google if you are interested! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Side notes: English version seems to be coming April 9th called "The Royal Guard". (Music) The melody is based on a Christian hymn know as "Härlig är Jorden" (Psalm 297) in Swedish. It seems like the hymn came about in melody as a folksong in Germany and was called "Schönster Herr Jesu, Herrscher aller Erden”. It was later in the 1850s changed by the Danes and called "Pilgrimssang" or "Dejlig er jorden" and is probably how it spread to Sweden. In English the melody is known as "Fairest Lord Jesus". (History) "För Sverige i tiden" or "For Sweden in the time" is the current king (Carl XVI Gustaf)s motto. The march over Belt was when Swedish troops marched over the frozen Great Belt to take Copenhagen in 1658. (No Sabaton song since it happened between "1648" and "Caroleans Prayer"/"Karolinens bön") Lund was a battle outside the city of Lund in southern Sweden in 1676. (Closest Sabaton song: "Caroleans Prayer"/"Karolinens bön") Narva was a battle in Estonia were the Swedish troops achieved a major victory against the Russians in 1700 (closest Sabaton song about it: "Ett slag färgat rött"/"killing ground". They are about another battle a few years later) (Translation) "Landsfader" could probably be translated as either "father of the country" or "founding father" but the former is a closer translation. When they sing "Knee to knee the guard march" (Knä om knä livgardet går) they actually sing "walk" (går) but in context I would translate it to "march". The line "Still guarding the governance door" could probably also be translated as "Still guarding the door of power". (Video) The reason the video might seem a bit underwhelming when compared to the likes of Bismarck and Verdun. Is that it was probably affected by the Swedish Armed Forces decision to not cooperate with Sabaton. The stated reason being that Sabaton played at a festival in Crimea in 2015. The paper Joakim is holding in the video (towards the end) is just the lyrics of the song. The old paintings in the video portray in order of appearance (unless I missed one): Gustav Vasa (1496-1560). In the stairway as well as the middle one behind Joakim while eating. Karl XI (1655-1697) Left painting Karl X (1622-1660) Right painting (my edits to this comment) I have made quite a few changes to the comment over the last 48 hours. If there are any mistakes feel free to point them out! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3:05 I like this scene over the song's bridge, specifically the camera work. After the arguing has reached a peak and someone has knocked over a (noticeably bloody looking) glass of wine, the camera pans over a few of the other band members to show the blood on their clothes, and that's when Joakim comes in with the bridge, talking like a voice of reason such as "these are the reasons we came together here to begin with." It's a very effective shot, for only lasting about 5 seconds.

The Carolean infantry celebrated many triumphs during the Great Nordic War and the most prominent of its regiments was Charles XII's own Life Guard. The elite status of this regiment was marked by the fact that they had higher salaries and hats decorated with gold, silver and silk. In addition, with first 1,800 men and then 2,600 men, it was by far the largest regiment in the Swedish army. At each battle, the Life Guards took the lead and in the battle line, they always held the place of honor on the far right. Although the Life Guards have victory names from many wars, there is no doubt that its heyday fell during the Great Nordic War. For during this war they took part in the landing at Humlebæk 1700, the battle of Narva 1700, the transition of Düna 1701, the battle of Kliszow 1702, the siege of Thorn 1703 and the battle of Holowczyn 1708. However, after these successes they suffered a devastating defeat at the battle of Poltava 1709 and shortly afterwards a halved Life Guards capitulated together with what remained of the Swedish army in Perevolotjna. The Life Guard was re-established after the disaster, but the new guard did not get the same luster as the old one and the recruitment problem meant that it remained as a garrison in Stockholm until 1718 when it participated with almost full force in Charles XII's last campaign in Norway. The main function of the Life Guard was to act as a bodyguard for the king and since kings have always had bodyguards, it is possible to trace the Life Guard's ancestry all the way to Gustav Vasa's uprising in 1521. In practice, however, during the great power period there were several different bodyguards who disappeared and were replaced by newly formed regiments. More specifically, there were four incarnations of the Life Guards during this time. Created in turn by Gustav II Adolf, Kristina, Karl XI and Karl XII. The continuity that exists between these regiments consists of the small force that was always left in Stockholm as a castle guard when the regiment pulled out into the field. The drabant corps that had protected the Vasa kings was transformed in 1618 into a company regiment which Gustav II Adolf elevated to "The King's livery regiment". It also came to be known as the Court Regiment or the Yellow Regiment (after the color of its clothing). The original drabants, however, retained a special position in the new regiment in that it consisted of Swedes and was named the King's Life Guard. The rest of the regiment consisted of Germans. After participating in Gustav II Adolf's campaigns in Livonia, Prussia and Germany, the regiment split after the battle of Lützen in 1632. The Life Guard escorted the king's body to Stockholm and remained there as a castle guard. The remnant, now called only the Yellow Regiment, continued to fight in Germany and went into French service in 1635 when its commander Bernhard of Weimar resigned from the Swedish army. The kings' bodyguard always included a number of mounted soldiers until September 1700 when Charles XII had them form an independent squadron, splitting the life guard into the life guard on horse and the life guard on foot. Together with the Life guard Artillery Regiment and the regiment of the noble banner (the life guard holding the king's standard), the Life Guards were one of the few truly national regiments that picked up their recruits from all over Sweden. The bodyguard, however, consisted almost exclusively of ethnic Swedes. The lifeguards who were born in Finland, for example, were completely concentrated in the Swedish-speaking provinces. And despite the strong national character, the Life Guards' actual area can be said to be Svealand and Östergötland, from where approximately 75% of the recruits came. Side note: If the noble banner regiment had not been disbanded in 1901 it would have been Sweden's oldest regiment, it's founding dating back to 1280.
