Wahoo ELEMNT Updates: Music Control // ANT+ Light Support // GoPro Control

A number of long awaited and much requested updates land today on the Wahoo ELEMNT cycling computers. Music/Media Control, ANT+ Light Support, GoPro Control (soon!), and a number of additional workout sync sources from various workout apps.
Update: And I've been informed it's only the BOLT V2 and ROAM V2 getting these features. Fingers crossed they roll out media control to the previous units (as I can confirm it does work on them.... 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Apparently ALL of these updates are limited to V2 ELEMNT computers only. Sigh. I can report a lot of this does work on older units... but likely due to my account being in some kind of Stranger Things state with a beta enabled account.

Media control is working pretty well here on both revisions of the ROAM V1. If this is an Android only thing, roll with it. Nobody uses Android. ;)

Excellent work Wahoo. I went from my bolt 2 to edge 830 just for that radar light control and have been missing my bolt ever since, i can go back to bolt now so happy days for me. Love to see this kind of software work. Thank Lama for continues updates news.

All right, so for everyone who can't get the light support working, do the following: You have to repair the radar in PAIRING MODE (hold the power button for 2 sec from turned off, purple flashes) and pair it then. For some reason, you could also pair it when not in this mode. Maybe then it's just a radar, not a light. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Works with Bolt v2 and Varia RTL510.

So glad Wahoo are making this better. I love Wahoo products, and they dont yet have their own Radar solution. I've been using Garmins with it for a few years now and its just brilliant. I'm wondering now if the corresponding FIT files produced by wahoo after each ride, might now include new FIT data as a result? This would be very cool if so!

woah, another update? well, as someone who listens to podcasts or music during longer rides where there is no soothing nature ambience, media control is a great addition. as for workouts, i found a workaround to store workouts on the unit, not sure if i need this, but for some its great I'm sure.

Support for ant+ lights was something I was waiting for since I bought varia. Now I’m waiting for automated switch between day and night modes basing on built in ambient light sensor. But still I’m very happy, finally I don’t have to count clicks on varia’s switch.

Finally! This was a long overdue update and got even more functionality than expected. Radar and light control works perfectly, i expect quite a big battery benefit with light off, radar on and only blinking when a car is in sight. Exactly what i want for ultra road races and bikepacking. Music control with Iphone12 and Spotify works too on my Elmnt Roam V2. Will try the Bolt V1 of my GF.

Unfortunately these features will only roll to V2 Elemnt units. My older GPS devices had the media control enabled as part of a beta/test. I was informed of this after publishing the video. Maybe it's something they can update the V1 units with in the future with enough encouragement.

The radar without light doesn't work at all! I can only switch it on at the start and off at the end. One mode remains on while driving! Explain how else it should work. Without light, no radar bars appear on the Wahoo!

What a great update. For me the only thing is that I would love to set separate day and night lighting behaviors. Otherwise I'm very happy with the new light features.

JFC have I been waiting forever for the Auto light function! This has bugged me for years since I don't need the radar blinking constantly if there's noone behind me. It should help with the battery life as well. I'm so excited right now I could go out riding the entire day!

For the app and the unit to register the new things, have the radar on, play some music and fiddle with radar & light related settings in the app. I didn't have a media page until I started playing music. And I could not control the light on my Garmin 515 unit until I toggled that auto bike lights in the app. Its a bit fiddly but in the end - it worked so have some patience and perhaps a bit of luck.

I can switch on the radar at the start of the journey and switch it off at the end, but I cannot ride with the radar without light mode. I would like to use the radar without light on the Varia but see the bars with the messages on the Wahoo display.

Thanks, Shane. Super useful. I don't seem to be able to control the Garmin Variables RC715 light using the roam v2 unit. Do you have to pair the garmin to the element twice -- once as a radar and once as a light? It only shows asa radar on my device. I'm missing something here. thx

Don't know if you reviewed this in a prior video but my Wahoo Bolt V2 now has the ability to turn off my Garmin Varia RTL515 light from the devices settings on the unit. The radar is still in effect but you can control the light mode you desire as well as turn it off completely until a detected object is near. You can then select how long you want the light to remain on after a detection. Nice feature if battery life is a priority.

Quick question though: Does the radar also operate while light turned off and without flashing when a car approaches? So basically without any lighting whatsoever only showing approaching vehicles on the wahoo display?

wow, that Varia light control is better than Garmin’s implementation! I ride with the light off/radar on a lot on trails, and it was the main reason I chose Garmin over Wahoo. However, this new feature that only turns on the light when an object is detected is perfect. I would love to see Garmin add this feature

Hi Shane. It works well for the rtl 515, but not with the rtc715. If you turn off lights the radar goes off too. Did you try it with the rct 715? I m i doing someting whrong? Thanks for your videos.

No music control on my Bolt V2. I've got my See.Sense Ace light working with it. So the app and device firmware are up to date, and the light part has worked nicely, but I'm not seeing the option to enable the music control in the Pages menu on the app. That's with the latest Android app version and device firmware.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Shane. I updated my devices (RTL515 and Bolt 2) hoping to try the ant+ light feature. I found I still am not able to change the light settings from the Bolt 2. I see the field in the computer, but when I press to change the light mode for the radar, nothing changed. Have you heard anything that might cause this issue?

You’ll need to re-pair the 515 when it’s in pairing mode. 2-3 second press when powering it on.

Love the video as always but so disappointed that I had my hopes up and was misled. I have the Roam v1 and although the video says that the media control works for all Elemnts it doesn't seem to be accurate. Does not include v1. I'll get over it but it should be clarified. Hmmm... I only have the Varia Radar, so no menu item in the app to turn on/off at the start of the ride. However, if the Bike Lights selection on the Roam V2 is set to OFF the radar will initiate the last radar configuration and turn on the light at the start of a ride.. A problem.....when the ride is stopped it does turn off the light but the radar unit still on. It looks like it turned the radar off but it didn't, it just turned off the light. This could result in the worst scenario: the battery is depleted when you think the unit is off. I would prefer that a "turn radar off/on" message is sent if there is such a message available.

I have a Bolt V2, paired with RCT715. The light controls doesn't seem to work on the V2. I'm not able to toggle the light variations on the 715. Similarly, I tried it on my magene L508. I faced the same issue as the 715. Am i missing a step here in the set up?

Great update, but again, the new stuff doesn't work for me :( Changing light mode in the menu for my varia does nothing. Its the german rtl516 variant, so it only has the peloton and light off modes. Do you know if wahoo tested this variant and it is supposed to work?

Please try unpairing and repairing your RTL516, in our Beta testing this resolved it for one of our users of the 516 variant. If this still does not work, please shoot a note to our Customer Service team. If they can not help you sort this out, they will get the details we need in engineering to sort this out. Thank you!

@@andrewemrick-32196 I have the Varia RTL515 and cannot ride without light mode. I can only switch on the Varia at the start of the journey and switch it off automatically at the end. However, I cannot switch off the light while riding. As soon as the light in the Varia goes out, the message appears in the display ( Radar disconnected) and the radar bars in the Wahoo display disappear.

I had to re-pair the radar, removing it from the roam, turning off the radar and then pressing the button for 2 seconds so that the radar goes in pairing mode. now all features work!

There's a ConnectIQ addon that'll do similar on an Edge unit. It was a lot of hackery when I looked into it a few years ago. Apparently it's much better now. Garmin always keep their cards close when it comes to features. I'm always keeping an eye on their betas.

Will there ever be support for a proper brake light function, meaning the rear light brightness increases when you start squeezing the brake lever, just like in cars? I know Wahoo themselves cannot do it without Shimano/Sram/... adding this to brake levers, but I'd love to have such a feature, eventually. (I know there are "solutions" based on detecting deceleration, but in my experience, they never work properly.)

Wouldn't be too hard to do i think. Electronic shifters are already fully wireless and can communicate with bike computers. So Shimano or Sram would just need to add a switch or a pressure sensor and the ability to connect a rear light. Give it one more generation, probably it will be first seen on shimano steps or so.

@@dakalla Yeah, that was my thinking too. Although I am not sure if I'd prefer the indirect connection through the bike computer - no particular reason, just to keep everything centralised. There is a question of shifters battery life impact with this, though (I'm a roadie with 105di2, which hasn't shifters hooked into the main di2 battery, hence my (slight) concern).

Quite possible I'm doing something wrong but in my quick testing it seems like Ant+ Light / Radar control doesn't yet work with Magene L508. The settings / toggles are all there but I can't turn the light on/off or set brightness etc. I've checked for latest firmware from Magene but possibly need another update on the light to make it wall work.

I don't have that "auto control bike lights" in my companion app... and it's updated. Weird. Neither have I that music page settings - and it's Roam v2.

Sadly with the rtl 516 version, it is still not possible to turn of the light and keep the radar working, the options on the element device just don't do anything when pressed

The same applies to the RTL515 😒😒 Now, after the current Vario update, no light mode switching works on the Wahoo Bolt version 2😟😟

Thanks for reporting in with the 516! Nothing yet for the Kickr 4/5 update for virtual shifting. Just working on my video about the CORE ONE bundle finally landing in Australia and Canada now though. That'll be up shortly. 🐰🥚

RIVAL already has music control. Currently it does not support light control or GoPro control.

Customize page doesn't show the Music control option, unfortunately. I have the Roam v.2 with the latest update WC46-16764.

I appreciate all this features, seriously that's sounds great and I like my wahoo computer but I've got a simple problem and wahoo cannot find any solution... Let me explain, I pair my tickr and I put it on me, the bpm are correctly on the screen. I turn off the computer and I take it the next day for a ride, I put my tickr on me and turn on my computer : no bpm... The lights on the tickr flashing but nothing on the computer. On the menu, tickr appear with a green dot but no bpm on my riding screen. I forget and pair it again, and it works.... It's annoying. I will appreciate any help because I feel desperate. Thank you Shane and the community.

Will light control work with the Garmin Varia front light on the Roam V2? Currently have a Garmin UT800 sitting in a box of unused gadgets and it'd be great to use it with the Wahoo.

Not a device I have to test. If it's an ANT+ Light then it should work.

@@gplama Just tested it. Turns on / off with starting / ending an activity and light modes toggle from the sensor page. All good with that, all it needs now is an auto function to go from Flash to Solid based on the daylight sensor of the headunit.
