When you watch a cute animal video on the internet, all your media then starts giving you cute animal videos. The same happens when you watch a conspiracy theory video, so you are soon only getting that stuff in your feeds, talking to others that have been watching the same etc. So they become brainwashed and think these beliefs are followed by most other people, other than the few they meet in real life and those get dismissed as sheeple as they believe they have found something amazing and others are just following a gullible crowd.

Yes it is. What is then important is, one, don't push it. You don't have to convince them/win an argument right there and then. They are likely to get defensive whatever you say. Give them time to process it, you just give them the permission to return to normalcy. Two, they are never to be trusted again. The various conspiracies were all just a smokescreen for the urge to authoritarianism, and in most cases white nationalism. If you ever see them, specifically them, getting excited about politics again you know you have to worry again.

What's interesting is that conspiracy theorist will always move the goalpost when their initial belief is challenge or proven un-true. It's sad to say but with so many social media outlets and algorithms...we're in a post-truth era where people can create their own bubble of truths and reality. It's gonna take a lot of time to ameliorate the situation.
