Psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Esther Perel is recognized as one of today’s most insightful and original voices on modern relationships. Her celebrated TED talks have garnered more than 20 million views, and she travels the world to speak about love, sex, intimacy, and infidelity. She is the host of the popular podcast Where Should We Begin? in which she conducts therapy sessions with real couples.
Recently Esther just came out with a new podcast called How’s Work?. In this podcast, Esther addresses workplace relationships, conflicts, and business negotiations via therapy sessions with coworkers and colleagues. How’s Work? is available on Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts!
The first time Esther Perel came on the podcast, she blew me away with her insights about love and intimacy. (A few hundred thousand downloads of that episode later and I know I’m not the only one!). When I had her at the Summit of Greatness, people booed me as I had to wrap up our Q&A - they wanted to hear more.
She truly is an expert on modern relationships, and I was so excited to learn about what she had to say about relationships in the workplace.
If you want to learn more about creating healthy workplace relationships, resolving conflict, and more about fostering intimate relationships with your partner, then tune into Episode 929 to hear from the queen of relationships herself, Esther Perel.

Divorce is unavoidable if both parties don’t try. Once the love is gone they’re no hope and is best to walk away. I understand how this happens, it’s no one’s fault, sometimes the upkeep is too much. That being said, for men there is no real gain from a marriage, the woman has most to gain. This really applies to men that are well off, unless you want kids no reason to get married.

If you are innocent and your partner suspects you of cheating or becomes overly jealous, that is on them. It is not a good idea to limit your own life and to walk on eggshells just to avoid the emotional instability of your partner. One will die a slow death doing that. Instead, the partner should work on their insecurities and create more stable emotions inside of them. Also, the more a partner accuses and suspects one of cheating, the more it indicates that they are either doing it or are thinking about doing it.

@@heartspacerelaxations6924 Yes. But at the end of the day it’s a choice. We can’t control what we feel, but we do control what we DO. The only issue is whether we take responsibility for it, or we don’t (I couldn’t help myself…) Her point is that infidelity isn’t necessarily a sign of a troubled marriage. It’s that the cheating partner wants something or is seeking something for themselves through sex. To feel young. To feel excitement. To avoid facing something in themselves. Her point is that you’ll miss that root cause if you just focus on “fixing” the relationship and dealing with the betrayal.

Bottom line is that you have to choose someone who has strength to say "no." Take notice if they throw things away easily that could be easily fixed. Pay attention to addictions that they give in to easily. Can they say "no" to themselves when shopping and want something but don't buy it because of good reasons. If they fail all the time at things that take internal strengths then their eyes won't stay on you. They will probably cheat. Its exactly the things that was wrong with my ex. This lady made the comment about how they're used to finding pleasure away from home and not at home. Thats so true! If they grow up thinking they have to run to someone or someplace else all the time to find happiness then they will run from you when you try to have a home life with them.

Cheating has almost everything to do with the cheater and not really anything to do with their partner. Yes, sometimes cheating happens in a relationship that is dying, but that isn't the cause of cheating. If something is missing in your relationship, then you should make an effort to communicate that with your partner. If that doesn't help, it may be time to end that relationship. Both partners should be getting their needs and wants addressed. If that's not happening, then there is a problem. Love and desire do not always go hand in hand, but desire can be created between loving partners. If you're unhappy in a relationship you can do one of 2 things: 1. Figure out why and work on it 2. End the relationship and move on. Happiness (in or out of a relationship) is something we control for ourselves. Nobody can make you happy, no matter what they say or do, if you choose to be unhappy.

True however sometimes the partner can cause the cheater to cheat intentionally or unintentionally. The partner might have some values that supersede the cheaters and cause them to cheat as they look for an escape. Like the lady in the video says you have to be in tune with one another. Yes my wife had issues and she cheated but I failed to be in tune with her to correct or improve the relationship, perhaps a part of me wasn't happy from the get go idk. Plants die they die... let's build new ones that are stronger... try try and try again but dont let previous relationships darken future opportunities. I am not expert though.

@@viper3636dr blaming the victim. The cheater chose to harm the person who trusted them the most. No one MAKES someone cheat. It's the cheater's CHOICE. Blaming the victim is just the cheater trying to justify what they did to make themselves feel better. The cheater should be taking ownership of the lies and the pain they have inflicted. They need a counselor and find out why they act like this and learn how to not do this to anyone again.

I have the feeling that I mostly read "just leave". The prevalent mentality seems to be "return that thing to Amazon and get a new one". Because if I stay I have to go deep inside me, discover what I truly want and have to communicate this to my partner. Also I have to really think about what makes _her_ shine and support that while taking into account all her dark sides too and don't reject them or be afraid of them but somehow a) recognize their impact on her personality why I find her attractive in the first place and b) bring a kind of loving discipline to them so she can't just "let them roll". This is my status quo of knowledge/experience.

Friends and family tell you to run when you’re involved with a narcissist Who commits infidelity.. This is very distinct from a one off affair where the affair partner has remorse and genuine compassion for the other partner. It’s only in this latter circumstance where the relationship can become stronger. Otherwise it’s a situation of codependency which is addiction. I had family members basically not talk to me because they couldn’t stand to see me being abused likewise I had friends do the same. And as soon as I walked away they were by my side. I had to figure it out on my own. In my case it was in gods time and I had more learning to do. And now it’s a process of recovering from narcissistic abuse and codependency which is addiction in its strongest form. I really think it’s important to be very clear and distinguish narcissistic cheating versus not.

Cheaters feel a certain void within themselves so how are they in a "happy" relationship? And even if they are in a "good" relationship (let's say this stands) then they are absolutely not in a loving relationship. The only instances someone could cheat and love his or her partner is physical or psychological impairment of the loved one and one time stupidity after heavy drinking or such where you do not control yourself (this one is tricky though). The latter accompanied by remorse.

Cheating is one of the most destructive actions you can do to a relationship. It was my biggest regret in life. I didn’t know how to communicate, and I couldn’t live with the guilt so I ended things. It tore me up inside for years - and even to this day. Do not cheat. Always communicate.
@1Skorpia

Cheating is premeditated. IT STARTS IN THE MIND. Fantasizing. These people lack willpower and have zero respect for their partners feelings and the trauma they will do to them. What cheaters can't understand (because they are self absorbed) is that the partner is going to be emotionally affected for years . I dont buy the "i love my partner .." blah blah bs. They loved themselves and fell out of love with their partners. They say that to keep from being judged harshly. As they should. Its an emotional rape of the heart.

I don't see why one should even try to build a relationship nowadays. You spend a lot of effort to become remotely attractive/interesting, then you go through maybe even years of work to build rapport in a constant state of psychological warfare to pass local implicit mating rituals no one teaches you, then you may still be rejected on a whim, then finally commit yourself (the other one might not), then spend the rest of your life most of your free time to entertain your mate and continue to work on yourself to avoid becoming unattractive, you pour your insecurities and trust into it... all to finally realize your mate wasn't able to put minimum effort into it, he/she let intimacy die, threw all you did and your trust into garbage and went for someone new... while guilt-tripping you about it and using your insecurities as a weapon? You spend all that time, energy and effort to get only more work and insecurities to deal with. When, on the other hand, you can have all that time and effort to yourself, take care of your lust whenever you want on your own, and be mentally unburdened. So I don't get it... why even take the first step? As a kid people already learn to avoid hot stoves after getting burned by them... and this is like willingly going into a oven symposium to touch each and every oven until it maybe hurts only at tolerable level.

Ok, but can we acknowledge that Porn addiction (more then 2 times per week) increased the chance of an affair by 300x. Porn causes the watcher to see their partrner as less attractive then if they don't look at porn. So if people stop lusting, watching porn, and fantasizing all the time, affairs would dramatically decrease. Be faithful period. In your heart, mind, soul, and with your eyes. Why do we don't expect people to have self discple and self control anymore? It's like a generation of spoiled, unhappy, never satisfied grown up babies. Hello Susan, I read or saw advice on this topic before: Trying out new things for/by yourself and priorityzing them. Like a dancing class you go to alone every so often. Or whatever you want really. And enjoying it by yourself or with other people. It can motivate your partner after some time, when they see how you shine with that new energy. Then they might want to participate in what you are doing, or to create something new with you. The partner sees the benefits of trying new things on you, without feeling obligated to participate. That can motivate them without feeling like it would be too much work. They start to think about it more light heartedly. I do not know if this is helpful to you personally. Have a good day :)

What about family and friends who interfere? And get involved in the relationship, I cheated and to me it was a private matter and my husband told his mother and friends (we had a lot of issues), his mom kicked me out of the country and his friends sent me messages on FB. It was hell...also I was alone in the country both my parents died a year before and had noone to turn to for help or guidance. Some issues were me wanting kids and him not being ready. His mom constantly saying shit behind my back and him parating it to me of how I should be and act or even how i clean or dont. My parents deaths. My loss of culture and country after my parents died. Losing myself and being alone. Work stress, so much stuff. Too complicated to define feelings into words. Chanelle, pretty name by the way. I relate with you. But my story is a little different. I didn't cheat, but I was honest and open about my wants and desires along with a great listener. Truth is the turn on for me. I hold that trust and attach it to my heart and never throw it back in their face later. That's what I strive for, that close bond. When or if a friend or lover share a personal experience that they think about, or have done. That trust they have in me brings a bond like no other. If you build that trust you can do anything together. It's between them and me (so you hope so) when you share your wants or needs with your spouse, it's none of anyone else's business. I'm so sorry that his people are now involved and judging you. That person is very insecure Man-Child as we call it here in Orange County California. His family and friends should find out your situation, what are you going through and talk with you and as supporting friends and family now that they're in evolved. My ex is so afraid of the truth that she rather write me stories about her fantasies, say I wrote this because I thought you would like it. Then turns around and tells everyone friends and family this is what he likes. They start the same shit you're going through and it's really her kink not mine. It's her way to get it out there and have it judged and not expose her dark mind by saying it's me. If She wasn't so insecure and could be honest with herself. Judge me for the Man I am and been. I never would share her secrets bad or good with anyone but us. We would of had the strongest and closet bond and relationship. Not to mention that closeness brings trust and understanding. It builds security within your self and the relationship. We could of had the strongest and closet bond that we could do the fantasies she desired. It would of been JUST between us. Not friends or family with their one sided story. You know what Chanelle? I am a trust worthy man and man of my word. I still and never will break my promise. I won't tell her parents or friends that it's actually her thoughts and desires. She is so scared to talk or even see me. That's fine with me. I'm over her and it. It's been 4 year's now. Good riddance to them all. But the funny thing is, her girlfriends and even her own sister try and get me to be their man. Nope ! I'm done with that entire group. I'm successful, not bad looking and happy. I have a lot going on and while doing the thing's I enjoy I'll cross pathways with same minded girl and have a wonderful life together raising our own families. And sharing just between us, our fantasies not our parents or friends. My parents are gone too. Mom was murdered in Detroit MI. Dad died broken hearted in Miami Florida. So I don't know how you feel but I do understand what it's like to be alone. I had all this happened to me as I was dealing with their deaths. Plus a whole lot more too. I wanted to reach out to you and say. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sorry for the way you're being treated by people you should of had to support you instead of judge wrongly. Please don't beat yourself up for wanting to be happy and fill the void that wasn't, but should of been there from a guy and his people. Thing's really do happen for reasons. Be thankful you're hopefully rid of those closed minded uncaring nonloveing people. You dodged a bullet girl. Could you imagine dealing with them for year's to come? Let alone forever.. Well, I don't know you, you don't know me either. But you have a new friend in me. If you like, and only if you feel comfortable I like to offer you my contacts and someone to talk to. If that's okay with you? Also, listen to a song called No More Cloudy Day's. It's by a band called The Eagles.. If I don't hear a response from you ( Nooilnogas@aol.com) just remember, you'll be okay. And you have a caring friend in me. Preston Monroe

If a partner cheats, it's not so much about the betrayed partner, its more about blaming the other for their own sense of lack. The lie is that they assume who their betrayed partner is because they don't really know anything about them, projecting a fantasy onto their partner when in reality, they never got to see who their partner is. The point is that the other is not there to fulfil our own lack but to share and bring our own love together through new experiences. A cheater cheats because they blame the other for their own pain. The point is to stop assuming and start seeing.

So, what are the valid reasons that a cheater could give to justify betrayal? Cheating involves plotting and lying to your partner. What justifies that? To me, infidelity makes it clear that the cheater is scheming against their partner. It wasn't a mistake. How can that be rationalized away?... Only by mental gymnastics that won't stand up to the test of time.
