You mention the plastic steering wheel in both vehicles, I purchased a Trail Boss Custom last year. The plastic steering wheel was a huge issue for me. It is after all the only part of the truck you are constantly touching with your hands, but it had everything else I needed and nothing I didn’t. I bought a very nice sew on leather wheel cover and spent an hour installing it. It feels and looks like the factory steering wheel and cost me $15 vs $15,000 for the LT. I will be trading trucks again in a year and will likely get the same thing. I spend about 20 hours a week in that truck and have 400 engine hours in 27 weeks. I absolutely love it. And the $15 steering wheel cover is by far the best upgrade I made.

Great demo of ATRAC! And the nice part is that because it's software you can keep it on all the time, vs a locker that you typically turn on/off as needed. For our Colorado trails I pretty much turn ATRAC on and leave it on when I get on the trail. You might not want to do this in more sandy / muddy environments. Newer 4Runners added MTS -- multi-terrain select -- which is basically configurable ATRAC. So you can configure it for more or less wheel spin based on your terrain (mud vs rocks).

@jimmy-buffett
@jimmy-buffett Рік тому
@@poweredbyrice5708 it didn't actually cost millions to implement ABS-based traction control. Modern vehicles already use 4-channel ABS for slip when you're braking, so it wasn't much work to program the computer to also use the ABS when crawling. I wheel often with double-locked vehicles here in Colorado, the main improvement over ABS-based traction control is that the locked vehicles tend to crawl more smoothly. There's no slip, brake, grab jerkiness. FYI Jeep added this functionality as "brake lock differential" 8-9 years ago. It's a good budget way to add the rough functionality of lockers to lower optioned vehicles that don't have lockers.

I had a 2003 4x4 ext cab 8' bed chevy, drove home in a non plowed road with 5" of snow. Made it half way home in 2wd posi. Thought at the halfway point, hey, you have 4wd. I really enjoy the TFL comparisons of what are essentially very basic models (by modern standards) of smaller 4x4s. Tommy, Andre, and David are excellent hosts/presenters for these types of videos -- never overdone and always very informative. Of the 3 vehicles in this comparo, I would pick Tommy's Jeep. The FJ is just way too difficult to see ought from, which is an absolute deal killer for me driving off road in "tree infested" northern Michigan. The Bronco is a Ford - err, I mean it's rather "unproven" insofar as reliability is concerned and I don't like the soft top. The Jeep just simply does what it needs to do, is proven, is way easier to see out from, and is way more confidence inspiring IMO. The only thing that I would change in Tommy's rig would be to add an automatic along with Jeep's newer additional AWD setting (for my wife to use is winter street driving), which unfortunately may price the darn thing up to $40K MSRP for a new one (not sure if Jeep will even build a Willy's 2dr Sport w/ auto trans and additional AWD selector).

I like the manual windows on the Wrangler, the wheels on the Bronco and the white top on the FJ Cruiser. Between 1987 and 2007, my wife and I went on hundreds of camping and picnic trips using 4-cylinder 4WD vehicles on 4WD roads in Utah and surrounding states. None of our vehicles had ANY traction aids - limited slip, lockers, TracLoc or anything similar - so we learned how to pick a line that would keep three or four tires on the ground, even where most people would swear no such line existed. Right now we’re driving a 4WD pickup and an AWD car. Last time I looked, the base price for the least expensive Wrangler was $33,436 Wrangler Sport 2-door. My fantasy vehicle for my own use is the 2023 Wrangler Sport 2-door with: 495 optional exterior color Sarge Green 675 hinge gate reinforcement 875 heavy-duty rock slider with step assist 1,895 3-piece hard top 00 Heritage Tan seats 170 all-weather floor mats 40 grab handle kit 195 Trail-Rated kit 1,195 trailer tow and heavy-duty electrical group 00 manual transmission 795 Anti-Spin rear differential 525 cold air intake $39,850 TOTAL If I could afford to buy a 4WD vehicle for my wife too, it would most likely be that same vehicle (but in Firecracker Red) OR That same vehicle with the turbo 4 and an automatic transmission OR A Wrangler Sport 4-door with the same equipment as on the first Wrangler above $41,570 TOTAL OR A Wrangler Sport 4-door with that same equipment plus the turbo 4 and an automatic $41,570 TOTAL

The FJ is also a great vehicle, but again with the front drivetrain and the visibility is just super poor. Lastly, David, you built some great obstacles!! Keep up the great work and really enjoy your input and contribution to the channel!!

Well, for transparency sake, I have a Bronco on order, but I went Badlands for the tech. If I was limited to the lower price, I'd go FJ all day. It's tried and true and there are TONS of aftermarket parts for it to add whatever you might want, from lifts and suspension parts, lights, rock rails, roof racks, and even that tech stuff like a forward camera or even 360 camera systems, plus it has built in switches for customization.

It would have been $4,000 cheaper with a 2-door. My 2023 2-door ManSAS with aux switches, door keypad and rack that I reserved July of 2020 was 43,600 sticker price. I found a great dealer that offered 1,000 under invoice and with Fords discount I got it for $36,100. It pays to find an honest dealer.

Should do these two compared to a Rubicon with the Extreme Recon Package and the Badlands with the Sasquatch Package. And then do the 392 vs the Bronco Raptor. Having a comparison of the main trims compared to each other would be nice.

On MOST cheaper-optioned 4x4 vehicles, the deciding factor will ALWAYS BE THE TIRES! The Jeep SHOULD win by a landslide due to its waaaaay superior tires BUT that cheap Bronco held its own! I just saw some Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar set of four tires for only $620 USD ($788 CDN). That means for less than $1000 (included installation and taxes!) you could MATCH the Jeep in off-road tire grip ability! That said, I actually like Tommy's Jeep Willy much more than the cheap Bronco. The Jeep looks better and seems more off-roady while the Bronco seems a tad detuned and too much comfort added in! If I had to pick between ONLY these two vehicles, the Jeep Willy wins my heart! V

One thing I noticed about all these shootouts ... (and others on UKposts). All the vehicles are pretty equal really, to me. Everything will have its pro and cons, but they all performed equally ... pretty cool adding the FJ. People have to just figure out if they are Jeep or Bronco ... or FJ people. Which is attractive to you. And then that's also the fun part... modding. Adjusting things (parts) to fix those little inconsistencies. Also with regards to the head Bob, or getting thrashed around a bit ... isn't that really part of why we dig wheeling? Isn't that part of the allure. If I wanted smooth, I'd go for a drive in my car ... "HOLY CRAP! I ALMOST HIT THE ROOF!"

Great review as usual!!... but definitely an apples vs oranges comparison. 2 Dr vs 4 Dr, base bronco vs non base wrangler....(Willys package....tires and LSD in the back make a huge difference) A true base to base comparison would be a 2dr base bronco (no lockers) vs 2 Dr sport wrangler (no lockers) All that being said I realize it's hard getting the same spec vehicles ...and the videos you guys put on are really good 👍

There will be a f-350 super duty out back and my Super C RV will be on the new F600 4x4 chassis. Ford is doing some great things right now. Thank you and be safe.

Instead of buying a new base model, I bought an older Rubicon and it can't stall. It will spin all 4 tires on pavement in 4 low before it stalls due to the gear reduction. So my crawl control is 1st gear and with 33 inch milestar Patagonias I'm still going about 1mph.

@highwayman1218
@highwayman1218 Рік тому
Smaller wheels mean nothing, so it has more sidewall. Realistically were talking 1" (if that) between tires at the dirt. A 32" doesn't have 2" clearance over a 30", it has 1" on paper (Though Ive never seen tires run true to size, they're always shorter) Tire and wheel sizes werent the issues for the Bronco in these tests.
@LMacNeill
@LMacNeill Рік тому
The Wrangler's shorter wheelbase definitely gave it an advantage in the Holes test -- it didn't get a single wheel lifted. Kept contact with the ground the whole time. But, really, both of these vehicles are very similar in their off-road capabilities. The Bronco comes with a few more creature comforts, but costs about $3K more. If it were a 2-door, like the Jeep, the cost difference would be even less (don't quote me, but I think the 4-door is $2K more than the 2-door?) Either way, these two vehicles are very well-matched when you compare similarly-priced options. The competition between the Jeep and the Bronco will improve both of them over time. It's truly wonderful for off-road enthusiasts!
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 Рік тому
At the quoted sticker prices, I think the Bronco is by far the best value out of the three. I think I might possibly buy the next model up Bronco that comes with the locking diff, but other than that I really like the base model shown here. I think I would paint the steel wheels white, do some white letters out 33" all terrain tires, and maybe a 2-in lift. I would probably rather own a Jeep, but a more optioned one than Tommy's, but the prices are ridiculous. FJ Cruisers, even though I currently own a 4Runner, I've never liked FJ's, I think they're silly.

One thing I notice from the beginning is that the Jeep has much better tires for off-road. Also, it is the shorter one, which should afford it better geometry. This is not a knock against the Bronco in any way since it looks like a very solid offering for a 4-door base version. It's just that the Jeep is a Jeep.

It seems like a 2-door bronco with similar wheel/tire package as the Jeep would perform about the same. With two different vehicles driven by two different drivers, you don’t get an exact equivalent test. But a great video all the same.
