THANK YOU, This is finally come true. This ZION review. I am sending back the Yosemite = screwed up and ordered the wrong tent. It leaked at the door flaps. I meant to order the Zion, And just placed the order 5 MINUTES ago, before I even Knew you posted or watched this vid. Now... I hope this is good.

Historical perspective. (I'm 76). We spent serious money on Kelty and Jansport products. THEY were the NAMES to conjure by in my day. CONDENSATION: for sure. SPLASHBACK: you bet. WATER INSIDE THE TENT was expected. The idea was to use a 'blow bed' to raise the sleep system above what small accumulations of water happened overnight. Sponge and towelling were a standard part of our kit. We OFTEN woke to find a small outside corner of our sleeping bags to be damp or WET. WE were HAPPY AS CLAMS to be out of the hillside (we could not call them 'mountains') winds. WE were basically DRY🙄and comfortable 🙂 in comparison to the canvas tarps, the family used on truckloads of grain. NOW I use your reviews to help me find even sounder shelter. Today's Consumers expect a bit more than we had on offer.

🆗 bought this tent about a month ago, and on my third trip, about the 12th night in the tent, we got 10hrs of solid rain while in the grand canyon. We also had a bit of wind. You reference this tent having a bad pitch often, but i’m not sure why. I would consider a bad pitch to be a tent that collects rain and pools on the fly because of sagging etc. This wasn’t my experience. I’m not sure why you bother to tie the rain fly to the poles. Even while gusting 20-25kn the tent had no issues, as the rain fly is clipped in, and going no where. Those ties simply stress out the seam sealant by using them. They are basically pointless save weight cut them off. My tent was dry in the morning after the 10hr rain and here is why: I only used two stakes. I didn’t stress out about pulling every wrinkle out of the fly. I only staked out the vestibules and I didn’t stake out the long ends of the tent. This closed the gap where you saw all your splash back. Yes, you get what you pay for, but you also have work with what you’ve got. $124 shipped. Or say my hubba hubba NX for $469 shipped. (which actually does condensate on me sadly) The choice is easy here (for car camping) Because this tent is so heavy duty it will definitely out last the hubba hubba. Your frustrations are clearly obvious, but as a tent guru you should be able to work with a design not against it. All of your issues with the Zion 2p seem minor and avoidable imo.

The condensation that I experienced on this exact same tent was ridiculous. The vents are way too low, the moisture gets caught in the very top and never leaves. It was a good 10mph wind out those few days as well. Most everything I have tested from this company has been bad experiences. They don't care either, ask them.

I'd love to see a test of the other company's Zion 2 tent, see if it's any better in more ways then just being lighter. Based on seeing 2 different companies with a tent by the same name, that visually looks about the same, but one is know known to be crap, I'm suspecting Hyke and Byke may be doing cheap knock-offs. Something the other company might be interested in knowing about especially if a test of their Zion 2 tent performs significantly better.
@chrisdecker7237

I've taken this tent into some really rough weather (heavy rain and snow, strong wind) and never had this issue. Obviously a weakness though. Oddly enough, you didn't touch on the worst part of this tent - the condensation! My brothers and I went on a trip where 4 of us had this same tent, and every morning that we had to tear the tents down, the inside of the rain flies were completely soaked. That said, after a couple years with this, I am simultaneously not disappointed with it, but I'm also looking at the Nemo Dragonfly 2 ;)

I had placed this tent as one of my top possible tent purchases because of 2 door and vestibule, inside storage sites, size, foot print inclusion and eventually reduced cost. But quality control issues and the problem with fly and main body separation are very important to me if I don’t want a wet night sleeping. You certainly managed to present key “failures” which has now removed this one from my list. Back to more research on my part.

I think it would be interesting to do a revisit episode, where you take some of the lesser performing gear and make mods to them to improve how well they work (ie, adjustable fly tie downs, additional seam taping, etc). It should be noted that this would specifically discourage purchasing the gear and making the modifications (since you really don't want to reward the company for substandard products), and be more towards two classes of people: 1) people who have already purchased the gear, can't return it for whatever reason, and want to make up for its shortcomings, or 2) people who have unexpected issues with gear in general in the field, and how to improvise solutions for those issues on the fly.

I bought a tent that looks almost identical to that tent from Walmart for under 33 dollars. They did point out that is was heavy. But the weight came from the heavy duty fabric because the poles and stakes were aluminum. It didn't come with a foot print or an aluminum disc but i will just use a bottle cap and a tarp if needed.. My wife and I mostly car camp in the summer in California. My zippers said YKK on them and they were smooth but I wouldn't bet on it. It was sold as the Tooca model. The tent was seam sealed and the stitching looked good but I will test it. I will spend some time to improve it's short comings. I have time but limited funds as I'm retired. Thanks for another great review.

Thanks, Luke for the great review. Getting wet isn't worth it, no matter how much money you save. I got rid of a poorly made dome tent nearly 30 years ago (I leftover from my cheap ex-husband, LOL) and have always bought quality ever since with no regrets. I still have my European model Wild Country tent, my PahaQue car camping tent, my Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 2P and my NEMO Dragonfly Bikepack 2P tent. You may pay a bit more for good quality but sleep a lot better when you stay dry and comfortable, IMO.

Luke, I enjoy all of your videos, especially your gear reviews. Your presentation and video production is excellent. During this video, I had some difficulty seeing some of the water leaks that you were highlighting with your flashlight. I was thinking that if you use a headlamp to illuminate the scene while freeing you hands, you could use a laser pointer to highlight and pinpoint issues with the gear that you are describing. I think it could enhance your narrative well.

jig... had that experience once with an OLD cheap tent that had been sitting in the basement for years before next use. Not with a new quality product. Before my partner bought his camper car, we spent even very rainy times in switzerland in a big Jack Wolfskin tent. Pouring alpine rains, you know. Even when the ground was soaked, inside we were dry and cosy & all our suff. And this tent was pretty used. We sold it for a good price in the end and reckon the buyer (father of some kids) still had lots of fun with it. So, folks, buy quality ... even used is a better bargain than new and cheap crap.

Ok so I had an idea to help show when a tent has leaked a little take a piece of used tissue paper and just place it on the tent floor! It will soak up the water and be a visible way to see smaller leaks the camera struggles to pick up. Its also a second use for something that rarely gets a reuse. Thanks for the unbiased reviews!

The other Zion tent is by Paria Outdoor Products, getting one of their tents instead now as I have other items from them and they are good, quality, affordable pieces of gear-and their customer service is outstanding. Looks like this purchase would have been a bad decision.

I have the Zion 2 and like it ... with limitations. We've backpacked with it once. The weight is simply too great. I can't say I was deceived by the company calling it ultralight -- though it probably got my attention. The weight was disclosed before I made the purchase. I think the price made me mentally discount the weight. The backpacking trip brought me back to reality. I use it now just for car camping. It's roomy for two and, since we're dry-season campers, rain is seldom an issue for us. I've never had mine out in the rain. Indeed, we often use it without the rainfly.
@TAVAAR7
@TAVAAR7 2 роки тому
Guessing it did leak. I hadn't had problems with the one I got a year ago, until taking it out this last trip. The temperature was below freezing, which was good otherwise all the condensation that built up on the inside of the rainfly wouldve dripped on me all night. The vents were open and I'd even set the tent up so the constant breeze we had would flow in one and out the other. I prefer 2 person tents even when I'm the only one in it due to keeping gear in away from the dozens of lethal bugs and critters in my area, but I might switch to my litefighter1 till I find a suitable 2 person replacement...

Evening Luke. Honest opinion is that you should talk about the company. Many of us would not support companies through growth and product development if the company were to not care about its customers. Its a HUGE reason a lot of us will buy things like Hilleberg tents. They are a great product made by a great team that truly cares about its customers. Having a company that basically says 'screw you' to those that support them should be an open topic to speak about. I dont advocate anything negative, just unfiltered truth and objectiveness. Something that I think other views may agree with. Its why your content is as great as it is. Honesty.

Having tried several tents, the Zion 1 Hyke and Byke is the only one i could fit in without touching both ends of the tent and a some room left for gear. I think most tent size specs are taken from the outside as in one end of the rain fly to the other instead of the real inside space. Mine seems to not have any quality issues but just in case, I glued the seems with Seam Grip and added my own adjustable guylines. If anyone knows of a tent spacious enough to fit in at 6' and still have a bit of room at both ends for gear and an inflated pillow (Klymit Static V Recon Pad sitting at 72 inches long barely fits in most tents) I would like to know. Looking for a 2 person version, be it low budget or not I want to see options for tall people. By the way, love your content Luke, really helpful stuff!

I believe it will fail in all categories. I feel, based on your conversation with the owner, he does not value feedback from anyone. He and his company must change to be successful.

If tent can't keep you dry when it rains to me it don't matter how cheap it is my comfort is most important. I could just imagine how miserable a trip that would of been in a tent like this had you relied on it for shelter.

Hi there! I absolutely love watching your channel. Thank you. I also love the outdoors...but having said that how do you get past a fear of snakes? I find myself being so super cautious with every step I can't really relax and enjoy myself. Any advice for being a baby lol?
