From the Google Cardboard to the Apple Vision Pro & Meta Quest 3, VR displays, optics and headsets in general gone through a crazy evolution in 10 years. With fresnel lenses, pancake lenses, MicroOLED (a.k.a. OLEDoS, or OLED Microdisplays) and more, there is a lot of sci-fi tech to talk about.

Great video! I acutely noticed the slight off-focus optics when doing the Vision Pro demo and found it to be the most unimpressive thing about the device, so I’m glad that you provided the answer for me that Apple intentionally did that to the lenses so that users wouldn’t notice pixelation.
@Mister0Eel
@Mister0Eel Місяць тому
Some additional information on the black frame insertion for those who are interested: The problem is really that the pixel response time of OLEDs is too good, with LCDs if you do 100fps, the display needs time to adjust, so you have a 'smooth transition' between the two frames, with OLED, that's not the case. The response times are so good that you get a sharp transition. Think of it this way with frame one being '_' and frame 2 '¯': LCD: _/¯ OLED: _|¯ OLED w/ black frame insertion: _ ¯ with our brain filling in a diagonal line in between.

This was a great breakdown. I'm surprised nobody has taken advantage of necklaces for compute and battery functions. Putting everything on the goggles themselves make them inevitably heavy, and when they do add compute/battery, it tends to be on a belt back or something. I think the ideal formfactor would instead be a small pack that hangs right beneath the back of the neck, and another small pack balanced on the collarbone, and then a flexible rubberized link between them so that the whole set-up fits loosely around any sized head and drapes lightly across the shoulders, not putting pressure on the front or mack, but on each shoulder instead. Then it would only need a short cable to link it to the goggles, while massively boosting the performance of the system.

One of the founders of Oculus has said that Apple is doing a "social engineering" tactic while releasing the Vision Pro: they know it looks like bulky ski goggles but the tech is good enough now and it has such a potential that they know that if people want to use this device, eventually even more people will opt in for bulky sunglasses with a cord that runs into a pocket computer that you carry around. I also wonder if a Fresnel-like lense technology could be developed directly on the panel using per-pixel micro lenses, without the godray drawbacks. I know some LG TVs are using microlens arrays to focus light better, although I admit I have no idea if this is even possible with the scale of micro OLEDs.

Nice video but it is missing Varjo for high end VR, other PC VR headsets, and even other standalone headsets like Pico, so it gives quite a partial overview of the space

Varjo is worse than AVP and Pico is worse than Q3, no reason to include

The optimal VR display will have to be curved because our eyes move in an arc. Being flat vertically is probably easier to get away with, as the eye doesn't have as much range (about 65 deg.) as horizontally, which is 90 to 100 degrees. And we typically don't use the upper and lower extremes of movement as much as side-to-side. Having a lens mimic these curves is possible, but distortion is very hard to get rid of due to the small size and tiny distances involved.

I do want to add a bit off nuance. 100 nits sounds very dim but its not as dim as you think. Though I do have a Reverb G2 with fresnel lenses. While using VR, you completely enclose your face, this means it's near-pitch black in there, this makes any light that appears in it much brighter to your eyes. Our eyes are also amazing at accounting for low light so this also helps a lot. THen.. I believe Pixar does this but unsure, forces their video mastering for HDR done in a completely blacked out room, using 100 Nits displays only.

Damn, I remember VR in 1995. A big bulky stand in unit and now it's as big and heavy as military night vision goggles.

Ok at first I didn't understand why the screens need to be so bright since I always set brightness in my Quest 3 to the lowest for comfort. But yeah, if we can use BFI to remove the perceived motion blur then that's awesome, and I get that BFI makes the image visibly more dim hence we need brighter screens in general.

How does the holographic lens deal with the issue of the focus distance? Can it bounce the light inside the hologram like the pancake does?
@eon5323
@eon5323 22 дні тому
It is a pancake lens, just the lens is a completely flat material. It requires a lazer back-light which is the biggest restriction.

The eye, optic nerve, and visual cortex are separate and distinct subsystems. Together, though, they capture, deliver, and interpret up to 1.5 million pulse messages per millisecond. To even approach the performance of this incredible task would take dozens of supercomputers, programmed perfectly and operating flawlessly and concurrently. Great design requires a great designer 😊
@MasterChaoko
@MasterChaoko Місяць тому
I dunno man... there's a _lot_ about human vision that's just fundamentally jacked. The optic nerve connects on the wrong side of the retina causing unnecessary blind spots and those same nerves twist around in such a way that our visual cortexes have to do unnecessary work horizontally reversing visual information. Then you have all kinds of developmental wackiness with the lens requiring regular prolonged exposure to sunlight to form properly and it rapidly losing the ability to heal cataracts with age
@md4843
@md4843 Місяць тому
@@MasterChaoko The ‘inverted’ argument for the alleged inferiority of the vertebrate retina has been soundly scientifically refuted, with multiple lines of evidence showing that it is in fact optimal for its environment. There are sound design reasons behind the arrangement, as the supposedly superior arrangement would require blood vessels in front of the retina, blocking out most light. In addition, one component of the retina’s Studies have shown that the forest of wires are part of a complex feedback system that actually improves contrast and sharpens edges without sacrificing shadow detail. As a result, compared to a camera, the human eye is far better at capturing contrast while simultaneously detecting faint details. Additionally, it has been determined that the ‘blind spot’ does not even slightly interfere with vision efficiency ☺️

Technically, OLED could be built, via a specialized controller, to mimic the 'slowness' of LCD, even if it just delayed the update of each pixel by a random number of nanoseconds.

Loved this! Thanks! I’d like to know how Apple’s engineers feel about Meta’s holographic lenses; whether they intend to use or improve upon them. They’ve always got to put their own spin on a technology, so I imagine they’ll take forever to adopt and implement it with some ungodly number of pixels and nits, and give it a different name.

I’m confused a lithographic etching of a lens inside of a thin piece of glass can have the same Light bending properties of a large sized glass lens so if you can etch the correct focal length of lens for a 120 degree projection per each eye then you can place an ultra thin piece of glass in front of the wearer
