The Volkswagen Group appears closer than ever to committing to an F1 engine programme when new rules come in for 2026, with the possibility that it could tie up with Red Bull’s new powertrains division, and bring Porsche and Audi onto the F1 grid. Porsche has admitted it is taking the possibility of an F1 entry more seriously than it has before, but its bosses have also made clear the conditions that have to be met if it is to go through with the idea. In this video Scott Mitchell explains what Porsche wants to see from F1, how F1 is likely to meet those requests, and the anticipated timeline that should mean we know what’s going to happen before the end of this year

The greatest innovations in car technology usually stem from racing. Disc brakes, Dual Overhead camshafts, KERS, Adaptive suspension, all technologies that came from racing and are common place in road cars today. Formula 1 is extremely expensive, it would be nice if F1 was just about seeing the best drivers compete in the fastest cars in the world but that's just not financially viable when the cars cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. In the case of Porsche, they want to see that the FIA takes electrification seriously before they invest time and money into it, because Porsche believes that electrification is the future. Why would they spend 175 million on ICE vehicle development if they believe it's on it's way out?

I like the approach Honda used to have towards motorsports participation. They didn’t care about real world applications. They saw it as a training ground for their engineers. This is an incredibly expensive training program, developing engineering skills with limited practical applications. I personally think the mgu h/k era is the moment practical development departed from the track. we've been almost a decade with engines without any real world applications. We're seeing major development in synthetic fuel with pretty much 0 emissions. In 5 years time I hope to see F1 go back to "noisy" engines instead of complying to Porsche's demands for electric PUs. That'll make way more sense than electric engines, that I expect to be very well developed by then. And maybe by then Porsche will be seeing things a little different. If your customer can buy readily available synthetic fuel, you can sell him some v8, v10... In 5 years electric engines should be way more distributed and popular they are now, in regular cars, not high end ones. VW will have done (and I assume need to have done) a lot of important research on it, outside of F1 obviously. I don't see why F1 should devote its innovative power to electric PUs instead of synthetic fuel dev.

It is not that simple. KERS was introduced in 2009 and Mercedes quickly established themselves as having the best package. Just like a foot race they took a lead, one that has not been matched until this year. Every rule change since then was not a complete re-write of the rules but built on past packages, and if we see the same pattern, new designs have a very serious disadvantage. That is how long it takes to close the gap, well over ten years. And make no mistake in those intervening years many engine manufacturers fave it a serious go.

Wrong assessment. Formula E is a mostly a spec race series, there are very little 'learnt knowledge'. Porsche wanted their knowledge gained from racing the 919 Hybrid to be transferred to a potential F1 program. Since other existing teams had already been dealing with the MGU-K for a long time, if they can leveraged their 919 program knowledge, they would more or less start off around the same equal footing as the other teams. They might even have the advantage as the F1 teams were more focused on the MGU-H and Porsche had perfected their MGU-K and had been producing performance hybrids for the road since 2014.

So, their conditions into joining F1 are basically the same as the reasons that led them into leaving the WEC and retiring the LMP1 Hybrid category... minus the engine technology part where the R&D on the power unit could actually be used in mass production vehicles which doesn't happen with F1 engines. Sure, they were spending as much on R&D to the 911 EVO as some of the top teams in F1, but they still left, even when the tech they got out from it was actually relevant to road cars. Also, let's not forget the fact that both Porsche and Audi want to wait until 2026 before they join because of the $200M clause the FIA and all 10 teams put in place by the 8th Concorde Agreement signed in the beginning of 2021. Not only would they be years behind in engine development, they'd have to pay $20M to each of the 10 teams currently participating in F1. The FIA and teams claimed that clause to be a safeguard against this very thing, but it doesn't seem to be helping, does it? It only makes the sport look even more elitistic than it already is. I'm very skeptical about them joining. They left the WEC even when they could put to use in road cars all the R&D done for the 911 EVO.... and the FIA only changed the WEC LMP1H rulebook when the class literally died, so them stating those conditions is probably just to inform the F1 fans because the FIA was already aware of them. AND even if the FIA is willing to change the rulebook, all 10 teams and engine suppliers need to agree on the PU regulation changes. I wish Porsche good fortune, but with those conditions, I don't see them joining unless a miracle happens.
@tjroelsma
@tjroelsma 2 роки тому
I know Porsche gave those reasons for leaving the WEC, but I can't help but feeling that the Dieselgate scandal had a lot to do with that decision as well. The VW concern, including Audi and Porsche, expected to be hit with enormous claims and so they drastically cut back on all unnecessary expenses. And racing IS pretty much an unnecessary expense these days. Now the majority of those claims have been settled and the VW concern can plan ahead again, it stands to reason that they want to re-enter racing. And as Red Bull has been pressuring VW for quite some time to get into F1, that may have been an extra impulse to make the choice for F1.

And then each team can buy from who ever they want and assemble them in whatever configuration they want. At the same time free up other parts which are less expensive as a source of innovation. How would Porsche manage an f1 and an lmdh program at the same time and with which factory drivers
@iiPolaris
@iiPolaris 2 роки тому
Look at the f1 calendar for 2022, they’re literally clashing with the 24h of Le Mans which shows that they don’t care, why would Porsche join them if they have to give up drivers for certain days because fom decides that no other series matter

@@iiPolaris It's a statement of intent. Buying into an existing operation makes it a bit easier, so we'll see how much success will come out of it. But it's not impossible to be in multiple high level sports at the same time Even Ferrari wants to enter LMh. And by the time new engine rules for F1 are in, that LMh era will be going for a few years now. So we'll see, we'll see.

The latter. Currently, Formula E has an exclusivity contract as the sole series to be fully electric. F1 won't be going full electric as the Hybrid systems are making them relevant.

I personally do not think F1 will go full electric. I would ass u me that it is electric energy. If they do go full electric than they might as well workout a deal with Formula E and become one. I personally also think full electric cars everywhere is 50 plus years away. Just getting the infrastructure is decades away. Manufacturers in general are putting the cart before horse. Personally think they should have concentrated on Hybrid cars and then go full battery way down road. Maybe 🤔 that is what F1 will become Hybrid racing in future. Interesting to think on it. Porsche like everyone else said. I will believe that when I see it.

Just because you see drivers doesn't mean the cars have fallen from air by God.

the MGU-H is great, but it needs to be cut in the middle. the heat turbine should have an electric generator without a connection to the compressor. the compressor should have it's own electric motor. without the direct mechanic connection the rpm can be lower and the turbines bigger. a 250 hp electric motor should be directly on the combustion engine.

As an Audi driving McLaren fan, it's fairly obvious who I'd like to see them form a partnership with. I think the Red Bull tie up is far more likely though and surely that would mean RBR running Porsche branded engines and Alpha Tauri running Audi branded engines, or possibly even rebranding entirely as Audi.

One comment I do not agree with is that the MGU-H is not relevant to road vehicles? Merc had already mooted plans in June of 2020 to use this tech in their AMG range of production vehicles? The idea behind the road-car version of the MGU-H planned by Mercedes-AMG is not to boost performance through the delivery of extra horsepower - like in F1 - but to help improve engine response time and minimise turbo lag.
