Language is a funny thing, I guess. That phrase is not common, where I am from. "Take care" is what people typically say here. I've never heard "be careful" said before, unless it is the context of a threat, like "you better watch your back", especially coming from a stranger. Here only your mom would say "be careful" to you and mean it literally. So, you learn something new, every day. Just like some people here are learning that that phrase can be taken differently, in other parts. At least SOME people are learning. Others would rather fight about it, it seems.
