If you listen to the rest of this album, you can hear more of him, and how much fun he and Sting had creating songs together (along with some other musical geniuses). One of the best songs ever written. Elegance, style, jazz, saxophone, lyrics, black and white video. I always ask myself how is it possible to make a song with sophisticated melody like this, when there is a melody inside other melodies and in the end we have a masterpiece.Sting has a total musical taste , his songs are the best, Fields of gold, Seven days, When we dance, It’s probably me, Shape of my heart, They dance alone, Roxanne. And of course there are so much more. We can count and count. I love him, his music stays with me during all my life.

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the stuff that comes out is processed to death and just rubbish in my ears and/or is more about an artist's image than sound. Some music is definitely decent but I don't think this type of musicality that was abundant in the charts from the 60s till the 90s will have a resurgence in the foreseeable future...
@GorditoCrunch343
@GorditoCrunch343 7 років тому
The fact that it took this long for a label like Frontiers Records to step up and actually bring back some classic rock/pop back to the West proves that the industry is permanently crippled. Music has been homogenized and cheapened to hell and back, and the general consumers have simply lapped it up without any regard for musicianship. It's just a crowd mentality that sadly persists to this very day. Very disheartening.
@michaelarcher1577
@michaelarcher1577 7 років тому
Music now involves tons and tons of marketing, as was discovered in the 80's or maybe even before. Cyndi Lauper had one great PR machine behind her for the time, but she also put out great music. Now, all you need is a great PR machine to succeed which is why shitty rap artists are a dime a dozen. They all make use of the "G.O.A.T." mentality to make themselves known. And the general consensus for music nowadays is that people think it's processed shit, they just don't bother to broaden their horizons and *seek out* music rather than let it fall into their lap. Crowd mentality will never get old, and good musicians must know how to work that crowd to their advantage, just like how punk rock became a lifestyle. And music is evolving, going through a shitty phase. I look forward to music in the future.

The elderly English gent in the video was Quentin Crisp, who suffered a lot of ignorance and was victimized, but never vengeful, only polite. He was an openly gay man, and the author of The Naked Civil Servant, among other books; he was often reviled and persecuted as a young man, and he moved to NYC for his older years. I worked for his literary agent and had the pleasure of meeting him once and talking with him on the phone many times.

This amazing song was written about and for English raconteur, writer and actor Quentin Crisp. Quentin was different from most boys growing up and stayed fiercely himself throughout his life. The lyric "be yourself no matter what they say" is clearly in reference to him. Mr. Crisp is also featured in this video directed by the award winning David Fincher. Quentin is the gray-haired "woman" walking and talking on the streets of New York. The song and video are multi-faceted and well worth a deep dive.

The sax 🎷 was also really on point and supplied by Jazz great Branford Marsalis. He played with Sting on his first 6 albums and also appeared on countless other albums by artists like CSN, James Taylor and the Grateful Dead. He also played on several tv documentaries and the “Sneakers” movie soundtrack.

I've seen Sting on stage only once.. in his production of The Last Ship a musical he wrote, directed and starred in, a few years ago. Very interesting and impressive, but I would love to have seen/heard him in his younger years.

For some reason I've remembered about this song and started listening every couple of days every week and now I find myself standing in front of lyrics and learning it ,it's just awesome and I've discovered that at the end of 7th verse it says "A gentleman will walk but never run" and the tone is serious and calm that's when I realized you have to sing it literally like a gentle man ,I love this song even more and remembered I used to sing it as a child too .

I'd be honored if some Sting fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK and WHY SHOULD I CRY FOR YOU on my YT channel in tribute to the master of lyricism and composition. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.

They just don't make music like this anymore. I'm only 18 but I can remember my parents playing sting when I was a child and thank god! Because now I appreciate good music!

Çisem Usta, don't feel sorry. My parents listen to shitty music, but I managed to listen to good one like this. Kids these days can pretty much be autodidact, they can find good music to listen all by themselves.
@cisem1562
@cisem1562 10 років тому
But people teach them shitty music as good music. They don't have too many options to choose in that way. I mean, I saw lots of people who think Lovefool is JB's song, not The Cardigans...
@Jurek009

Çisem Usta Bull. There are plenty of options. You have the internet, therefore no excuse not to explore different artists.
@TheChryssu
@TheChryssu 10 років тому
I agree with Jurek009. "Love Me" is not JB's song either. It was originally written by Natalie Burke, if I remember correctly and it was used in the sims 2 game. Nobody told me that. I found out all by myself. The conclusion is you don't have to listen to the shitty music people teach you to!
