A lot of this happens when the dog is elderly and genetically it can occur quite quickly. He also has an enlarged heart so doing procedures is difficult.

Dental chews and just brushing his teeth over the course of Toby's life would've saved him so much pain

Dental chews aren't even that good in actuality. It's like brushing your teeth with sugar. Raw meaty bones are a natural toothbrush for dogs and are much better for the dog in the long run.

Small treatments on the teeth of Toby should have prevented this massive operation. Seen it before on so many dogs with heart problems.

⁠@@prcervi I’m really surprised a vet hadn’t suggested getting the dogs teeth cleaned much sooner though! Especially when he was so sick. What you say is true, we have both small and large dogs but the little dogs teeth still take years to get to that stage and i mean many, many years.

That vet said they’d been treating Toby for months. Sounds like the vet and the family failed that little guy. Those teeth issues do not happen overnight.

I feel really bad for Toby, but I also feel bad for his owner. Dog dental care can be really hard (depending on the dog) or isn’t well known. And anesthesia in dogs with bad heart issues is scary. We’ve seen one tiny snippet of his and his owners life, that’s not enough to make any judgements. I think if he was truly being neglected, they wouldn’t have him on the show with his owner like this.

One of the only empathetic comments I've seen on this video. People are incredibly judgemental. Small dogs are already prone to dental issues and some small dogs have no teeth by the age of like 5, they can get very bad very easily. If he doesn't let her brush his teeth then it can be very difficult to clean a dog's teeth properly with other methods. People say she should have got him cleaned by the vet earlier but that requires him to be put under anesthetic which is of course very risky with a heart condition or elderly dog, it was probably a hard decision for her to decide whether she should get the teeth cleaned/extracted with the risk of the dog dying or to try to avoid that issue for as long as possible. Also, brushing teeth doesn't solve it for small dogs, my Grandad's border terrier had dental problems since quite young despite getting his teeth thoroughly brushed everyday, again, small dogs are just so prone to dental issues sadly

My aunts little mini dog (idk what breed but she weighs like 3 pounds) went in for a dental cleaning and had 10 teeth taken out. Before the removal she was snappy and mean and just grumpy all the time. Afterwards it was like she was a puppy again.

Toby cough is probably from his heart. My dog has a grade 5 heart murmur, and on bad days, she coughs like that she is on 3 different heart medication, and she is doing amazing

Says that Toby is like family and they love him so much yet they ignore his basic needs and have caused horrible dental disease that is preventable. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t give him heart medication for his heart disease

It seems like small digs have more teeth problems as they age. I have a 1-year-old Yorkie and I've tried and tried to brush his teeth and he won't let me.

Sometimes the problem is just that- small dogs. Their jaw is small but has the same number of teeth as a large one, leaving much less room… and causing issues.

Yes, I totally agree. I have a 3 pound yorkiepoo, and when he turned 3 we needed to remove 14 of his teeth. Vet said he had more teeth than usual and that caused his teeth to push against each other.

I brush my Pom’s teeth daily. Then he dose anesthesia teeth cleaning as needed. Other than that I bring him to anesthesia free cleaning every 3 months for a touch up. So far he’s 4 and needed on dental cleaning at the vet. But I try to keep his teeth as clean as possible, that way he doesn’t need to put under every year for teeth cleaning

As a vet tech, part of it is because they just don’t have as much room in their mouths as bigger breeds. If you can’t clean your pets teeth, please, please, please do regular (annual is most preferred) dental cleanings!!

Try using human toothpaste. It was the only way my sheltie would let me brush his teeth. And before anyone says it's not healthy...he lived a long life 14 and his teeth were terrific. No infection problem like in this dog. Sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons.

Small dogs do have problems with teeth. So don’t judge they rot very quickly. If you’re not well informed they can be overlooked!

We had to have all but one tooth extracted on our 9 yo miniature schnauzer Thor. I felt so bad. He's done well since.

Don't these people ever give their dogs bones? Raw meaty bones are a natural toothbrush for dogs. None of my dogs ever had dental issues because I gave them bones weekly.

Guy's stop criticizing Toby's owner because she has taken him to the vet after she notices he's sick... not a day goes by that I don't see video of animals starving to the point of being emancipated at least she's feeding her animal and taking him to the vet and providing shelter for him!!! I'm sure after this she will learn her lesson and be more observant with her next animal 😜

My Australian Terrier has only 2 teeth left, and she was eating her dry food the day after the operation. Dogs are so resiliant.

Dry food is usually the culprit of bad teeth,people think kibbles clean the teeth,and it does the opposite! Raw meaty bones are the way to clean the teeth naturally!

My dog had the same cough as Toby. Turns out she has COPD. She will live with this condition for the rest of her life she’s a Jack Russell mix and she’s 6 years old. She’s currently on steroids and another medication. I hope Toby feels better.

I brush my cats teeth 3x a week, but she has still needed 6 teeth removed in her life right now. Vet said it was just genetics with her.. I've had her since a kitten, shes 11 now. Had dental cleanings and brushing..

Toby reminds me of our old pitty. No gum virus she just suffered from bad teethbin her old age an so didn't really have anything left. Still a sweet baby just without teeth. Sides she likes soft food more anyway 😅

Soft foods for a few weeks till his gums toughen up, then he can resume his normal diet. I imagine he was fed soft (canned) food to begin with. Maybe a fresh type food like Fresh Pet, but who knows. I had a 22 year old cat with 6 remaining teeth, and she still ate crunchy food. She didn't like canned food. (Jan Griffiths).

Genetics is a big factor. Some dogs, you can clean and clean... will still look terrible and need extractions

@@dragonmama08yep, know a dog that has always had extremely smelly breath despite getting his teeth brushed everyday without resistance. He got most of his teeth extracted when he was old and the awful breath pretty much disappeared, suggesting he had dental issues earlier than first thought

Why didn’t they refer him to the vet school? I know the vet school here has specialist for anesthesiology cardiology. My service dog was referred there because he had a heart issue and he needed to have a specialized anesthesiologist that trained with for dogs, cardio myopathy problems, cardiac problems.

Many times the issue with that is vet schools are normally far from many people. Their may be one per major area and hundreds of miles to another one. If a vet school is not local then the drive can sometimes be taxing as well. This also doesn't include the fact that many vet schools who have such specialized care and equipment have a significant cost attached t receiving services there. There is always a pros and cons of sending an animal to a vet school of medicine. While yours has specialties it also doesn't mean every other school has the same specialty options.
