Full service veterinary care in Ontario Canada is ridiculously expensive. I have rescued 12 feral cats in the last 2 years on my own. Without the help of GoFundMe and having access to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic there is no way I could have done it. I'm on disability and there's no way I could have afforded to help even 2 of them at a regular vet office. The clinic charges $130 for a male neuter or $230 for a female spay. A regular vet (in my area) charges 2 to 3 times that amount for the same service. I've also been lucky that only 3 of the feral cats in this colony were female! Sadly, helping animals and even simple pet ownership is becoming something only the well off can afford. 😿😿😭

Wow! What a racket! When what you're attempting to do saves thousands of $£€ regarding strays and overpopulation consequences. Ive lived in the northeast USA and currently in the south USA including Florida and Mississippi, and I'm always able to find low-cost spay and neuter clinics. Thank goodness for that. That's almost my first step when I rescue an animal.

I live with a number close to the 20's in terms of owning cats...we lost a few in the past years due to their heath (and the vet misdigendosing one >:U) but yep My aunt has 2 dogs (used to be 3,but one passed) and 3 cats (used to just be 2,but one passed..my aunt got two kittens)

I also live in Ontario. Sault Ste. Marie Ontario is a border city with Soo Michigan. I had 4 pets at 1 time...all rescues...and I had a vet in Michigan for all 4 of them. Each of my 2 male cats cost $35 to neuter, my male dog cost $35 to neuter and my female dog cost $50. This was 14 years ago and was a lot cheaper at that time than it was here on the Canadian side. There is still a large price difference than it is in Canada 🇨🇦 today. I am also on CPP Disability and the Michigan prices were the only reason I could afford it.

Huge issue in the states....now our vets act like they are treating humans....had a cat with a bladder issue...no crystals...none...it was bladder wall sluffing...caused the wall to thicken and excrete blood into the abdomin...not one local vet would touch him. The one that did anestesized and he wouldn't wake up..we raced him to LSU VETERINARY HOSPITAL week there for treatment and getting him to eat and he is still with me...6 yrs later...the heartbreaking part..i worked in vet med as a vet tech and knew they could treat ...but they refused...kudos to LSU VET MEDICINE..and that is where he goes to this day, local vets yeah no

You have to be careful when you have a well trained dog on urination. They are 100x stronger than most humans "Holding it in". Their bladders could explode due to their loyalty to you. If an accident happens, it's either your fault for not letting them outside or they have a medical condition. Sometimes outta fear if they don't know you as it's a sign of submission. I remember sleeping & my lab was wining trying to get my attention, until he came over and bit my hand to wake me up(not hard, but enough to wake me up). Me & him could communicate without saying a word. I immediately took him outside. That guy peeded what looked to be 5 minutes straight. I felt so bad😢 and never again will view an accident by a dog on them. Please if you have a elderly dog or have an accident with an as adult, DO NOT GET MAD AT THEM! I can only speak for my dogs as each are unique.

When I got each of dog throughout my life I was always told about the regular vaccinations, flea prevention and tick prevention. I’d imagine they’d do the same in the rest of Australia but I think the paralysis ticks are kind of exclusive to New South Wales and Queensland but that was just from a quick google search so don’t take it too factual.

To the people complaining about vet cost: Vets don't get rich by being vets. Veterinary school is as expensive as medical school, but at the end of it, vets don't get paid near as well as human doctors. To run a veterinary office is EXTREMELY expensive. Between the building and its expenses, paying employees like techs and receptionists, the massive amounts of insurance they need, and the medical equipment, it's a LOT of money. A single ultrasound machine costs tens of thousands of dollars. And they use many of the same medications as doctors use on humans, which can get expensive. Point is - it costs a lot of money to run a veterinary office. Vets cannot volunteer all of their time. They have to support themselves and their families, their employees have to support themselves, they have to pay the leases on their offices, and have them powered. They have to buy medications and equipment. This stuff doesn't just appear out of thin air, and it's a very rare veterinarian that is independently wealthy who can just pay for it all. Be realistic. And if you can't afford to get medical care for a pet, don't get one. Pets are wonderful, they bring joy, they become family. But they are not a right. And they don't deserve to endure pain and suffering just because you wanted a cute pet, but couldn't afford to care for them properly.
@annekecaramin
@annekecaramin Місяць тому
Indeed! I'm a vet tech and I see the bills for the meds, supplies, blood tests... the profit margins aren't that high and we also need to be able to get paid every month. My boss will sometimes do a payment plan for a known customer with a true emergency, but we can't do that for everyone. All those services we offer are huge investments that have to be paid somehow. I also live in a country with really good human healthcare so people are unaware of what their own care really costs and make unfair comparisons.

@nopenope9867
@nopenope9867 2 місяці тому
I think the dog's situation was a bit far too along the line to recommend medication like that, usually flea and tick drops are a preventative. Considering the dog was already paralysed in their hind legs and somewhat in their throat as well, I think the vets needed to take more drastic measures and medication to ensure that the dog would have a better chance of surviving.

I live in the UK and I absolutely love binging this series. I love animals, and have 2 cats of my own that I see as my children. Whenever I watch bondi, I learn something that can be life saving at times. I had absolutely no idea how fatal painkillers are to cats, until I watched that one episode where the sobbing heartbroken woman comes in with her cat who had managed to find and eat painkillers. He ended up passing, and i sobbed. I knew cats can't have any human medications, and I never leave any tablets lying around, but now I'm even more careful and cautious. Thankyou for teaching me, bondi vets ❤

this is an old segment clip and at the time they didn't yet have the specific prevention that worked on that particular tick, they do now thankfully and you get to be on of thousands of comments informed of veterinary medicine making steps forward in treatments though like dogs with flea allergies on a preventatives, there can still be nasty side effects from the initial bite, and this will remain a common case for vets of that region

Veterinary medicine is not a very lucrative business. These vets aren't becoming rich. They incur just as much or more education debt as human doctors, but they make a LOT less than them. Healthcare is expensive - they have a lot of overhead (the building and its expenses, and employees like techs, nurses, groomers, receptionists, kennel workers, etc), a lot of insurance, and please remember that to give medical care to your animals, they use almost all the same medications and equipment as regular doctors use on humans. That costs a lot of money.

Yea but you can't continue helping animals when you can't afford food or housing because you aren't making any money. Vets aren't random independently wealthy people who can afford to just volunteer 100% of the time. Running vet offices costs a LOT of money, and they incur a LOT of debt just to go to veterinary school. They incur as much debt as a human doctor, and make a lot less than them.
