Many people (like 5!) asked me about my views on climate change so here it is! The video can be pretty tedious if climate change isn’t a topic you are interested in in the first place, but I felt that climate change is such a complicated topic that without a long ass video I can’t really properly explain my disdain for Greta Thunberg’s speech.
Yes I know she’s a teen and she’s autistic but it doesn’t change the fact that she’s preaching a dangerous message that will have serious negative economic impact, especially on the poor and for poorer countries.
If you can’t be bothered to watch the entire video, here is the TDLR: The climate crisis cannot be solved simply blaming people for their greed. Everything comes at a cost and the current climate situation is the price to pay for the peace and prosperity that we all enjoy. Everyone is to blame. To implicate change comes with cost, which doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to improve the current climate situation, but people should be made aware of the cost first. Actually I can’t really summarize it just watch the video goddammit

Natural factors that change the climate over millions of years include: changes in the Earth's orbit, the movement of continents & extremely slow changes in the Sun's output. Do not try to equate slow natural changes, with human-caused changes happening over decades.

@mawariyux8236
@mawariyux8236 4 роки тому
true, charts are mixed up, but that still doesn't present a correlation. In fact it then shows that for changing temperatures CO2 was very low once. CO2 was pretty much constant when saying that the fluctuation is about 5 ppm max. which leads to around (i'll just take a lowest value of 260 ppm for this, 5ppm divided by 260ppm multiplied by 100%) 2% fluctuation of CO2 which is pretty much nothing compared to the 12% (take ~-32.5°C-(-28.5°) = -4°C divided by -32.5°C multiplied by 100%) rise in temperature at around 8000 on the x-axis. By just saying 'but it was low before!!!' you are giving wrong input to people that don't know how to analyse charts. Next time say the charts are mixed, which is true, but just leave that last sentence out.

We will have global electricity network like internet today so then we can send one to another clean solar and wind energy, no need for big storage. China have today HVDC 1200 000V 12GW link in their country 2000miles long! Nuclear power is OK but general public do not accept that source of energy very well and also it's not renewable, you have to mine uranium that is finite source, also nuclear waste is problem that nobody want to have in their backyard. Nuclear weapon associated with nuclear power is also potential threat! But as I said nuclear power is good source!

I never really cared for Xia Xue until my gf showed me the drama and this video. Looking at the instagram shenanigans alone, Xia Xue asks important questions and that already puts her way ahead of all the echo chambers she's getting the hate from. I don't even have to mention she raised very good points. My two cents: The problem is way bigger and higher up on the hierarchy, with powerful giants (like the oil industry) which pretty much have a hand in the problem and (preventing the) solutions. Consumers that are you and I, however, have a choice. Collectively we determine how much power the giants have. The protests we see on the news aren't making things better. Educating those around us to make better, more conservation-oriented decisions will. Re-thinking your next purchase will. Extrinsic actions (protests) will get extrinsic results (companies greenwashing). Intrinsic actions will make those giants raise an eyebrow and make actual changes. Anyway it's always better to hear both sides of the story. How climate change policies affect the poorest is a good point, and food for thought for privileged Singaporeans like us. Kudos to you Xia Xue!

this makes a lot of sense, like with the plastic straw thing and saving turtles, the only reason why turtles are dying from choking on plastic is because people are LITTERING ON BEACHES! the problem is NOT the plastic, the problem is how people don’t dispose of their waste properly yet people are telling others to stop using plastic straws rather than to stop littering

@@almu167 in the ocean! Indeed guys...it's a misconception that plastics in the ocean come only from direct littering. Unfortunaly, that is only partly true. most of it is the non recyclable ones individuals/big producers toss in OUR trash, it then ends up in landfill (if not incinerated) and with factors like wind, end up in the ocean. I am a master student in environment and sustainability...a good solution is to combine individual/group effort and governmental effort . Try to reduce the waste, don't buy plastic packaged things when there is a plastic free option :) peace, hating on climate change activists is not a good move now..humans have already fucked up their environment to an almost irreversible point. No time to fight each other, we gotta unite and protect mother nature for our own survival! Let's think of innovative ways to reduce waste, unnecessary overconsumption and the use of fossil fuels. If each one of us cared and made individual effort, it would be an incentive to governments and big companies efforts. It's actually starting to happen little by little, and everyday I see a person, a shop, a company making efforts , or a new environmental measure taken, I feel true happiness !

I just reuse and wash my plastic bubble tea straws and don't use straws for drinks that don't need them, metal straws cause more strain on the environment so i don't use them, paper straws get mushy after one use. There always a chance that when someone is disposing of the garbage that I thrown, the straw would fly out and become litter, so doing a little deed like this can prevent me from killing one turtle for no reason, and that's good enough.

Actually that is incorrect. I worked for the largest energy company for 40 years, look at the Altamont wind farm, the Sierra club fights like crazy about these things, the problems is not how many birds they kill, rather the kinds they kill. The big ones. And if you think that is bad look at the huge solar plant (not solar panels ) in California when the birds (any) fly into the mirror path they are known as "streamers" they burst into flame.

One striking pt you made that i would like to point out is that, incineration do harm the environment as well due to the pollutants released into the air... So that argument is not really valid. I have watched a lot of CC content - thank you for adding some balance and sense to the debate (the one that's apparently over, even though it never happened). My only criticism is that at 3:31 you note CO2 rising at "an alarming rate". CO2 has been at thousands of parts per million and life flourished. Equally, below around 150 ppm, plant life cannot survive - so everything dies. The rate is only "alarming" if you set arbitrary levels for "tipping points" and the like. No such levels exist - or have been scientifically "agreed". Great content, thanks.

A huge part of her video talked about capitalism and how companies make money from getting you to pay for comforts. Well, that is literally what they've done- found a way to capitalize on your desire for a bag. Companies don't owe you anything for free. It costs them money to buy the bags, so it makes sense they want to get their money back. That's actually one of the biggest criticism about companies trying to convince people to do things like "use less napkins" or "only take a straw if you need one", etc. They say they are doing it to cause less waste and maybe they are, but it also saves them money to not provide these things for free or to shame people into not taking as much. Great, they get to look pious all while saving money or even charging you. Personally I think it probably is a good idea for people to be less wasteful (just like I think exercising is good for you, but I don't do it anyway), but it's still funny to see complaints about not getting free stuff on a video that is promoting capitalism.

I disagree with her argument of capitalism, defending corporate greed. But I completely understand her perspective coming from an influencer with the lifestyle she has, and coming from one of the most developed and capitalist countries in the world, she almost comes off as a Tory in away (British conservative party). Xiaxue is right, we do benefit from unregulated capitalism, but we can also begin to benefit from conscious, regulated capitalism as well, which would help to limit the destruction of our natural resources, and thus begin to control climate change. And there have been growing discussions and changes in business models, to include sustainability and corporate social responsibility. As well as lifestyle changes such as veganism and vegetarianism, which no joke can help the environment. While still ineffective (just take a look at H&M's bs CSR pledge). The efforts of people like Greta that continue to place pressure on the international community (the UN) and thus also the international cooperations as well. Keeping in mind that she is a teenager and her efforts are well minded, she is simply reminding us of the reality the actions of the current ruling class (yes corporate greed, the 1% etc) have towards the next generation. And doing so in a manner that sounds childlike and honest (refreshingly so), which is why you might consider it to be cringe. I suspect the reason you believe she "cringe" and "naive" because, you come from a country with a realist political stance (just google realism theory), having lived in Singapore and watched the way you speak on a couple of your videos you have that very honest and have realistic bleak mindset as well. Which while I understand, keep in mind that the way of thinking is different in other countries, depending on the culture, socioeconomic state of the country. Greta is from Sweden, they have a different way of thinking and I believe it is what has shaped her optimistic "naive" way of thinking. Maybe so, but that does not make anything she says any less valid. Because we need to at least try to effectively pressure corporations and governments to take action on climate change ASAP. No matter how unrealistic it is, you must try, think about your son's future for example. Xiaxue I recommend you to read: the Buddhist economist. it's definitely a starter book on the insight of capitalism and how we should improve it. I bought mine in Kinokuniya at orchard road. So you should be able to pick up a copy as well.

"conscious, regulated capitalism" - regulated by whom? Do you think that people who regulate industries always do so because of goodwill and altruism? Look at OPEC, which "regulates" the production of oil in its participating countries - do you think this regulation is done without an incentive in mind? Regulation always inevitably means more intervention from the government to achieve what they believe to be the best from themselves. If corporations are greedy - are politicians and people within the State not even more so?

@Boi Banana I agree with most of what you said with just one side comment - wouldn't under-regulation cause LESS monopoly instead of more? Many companies (such as the transport companies here) are monopolies simply because there simply is too much regulation that act as a barrier-to-entry for potential market participants.

@Gluepops It's directly relevant to his point because according to this measurement the Earth isn't running out of resources as environmentalists popularly claim. The crucial point is that natural resources are limited, but human ingenuity (aka innovation) is unlimited, and it is the latter that multiples the former. It builds directly on Julian Simon's famous thesis "The Ultimate Resource" (check out his book). Excerpt from the article: " The 2017 SAI of 479.6 suggests that our planet was 379.6 percent more abundant in resources in 2017 than it was in 1980. Put differently, resources were 4.796 times as plentiful in 2017 as they were in 1980."

@Grape Jucie Aww thanks, I'm flattered you think I'm young, I'm 30 btw, but appreciate the compliment. Instead of throwing out generalised opinions on Xiaxue's smartness, lets have an adult discussion about why you think 'this' is not smart? Do you think that the facts she puts in the video was false? Do you feel that the research she has put in the video to back the facts that she has put up in the video lacking? Do you think that XX has only presented one side of the argument of climate change in the video? Was it biased in any way? Was the way she presented the facts, research, and her argument supporting her opinion on the topic not coherent and logical? Did you think XX did not put any thought into the situation before publicly making her opinions known? By the way, thinking. What do you think about that? I think it is so underrated and something many people should do more of before opening their mouths or typing away on their keyboards and phones.

@@janessasanio Grape Juice is probably saying that because you will find that some of it is misleading when you do your research. When someone says something in a confident tone doesn't mean that it is 100% accurate, and the references that are being cited are important. Some of the points she raises are sound but when it comes to the climate science data, it's not all accurate. This is a complex subject, and as someone who is new to the topic, I don't blame anyone for not understanding it thoroughly or communicating it in a balanced manner. I would not go so far as to say that Xiaxue is not smart, but this is an area that is complicated and not everyone is suited to talking about it without doing some deep diving. I have several friends who work on climate change issues, and know people who represent Singapore to attend COP talks, they said her scientific explanations were wrong.
@janessasanio

@@OliviaChoong Hey Olivia, thanks for your reply. It's this types of discussion that I like to have. I agree with you that climate change is a complex subject and of course I'm not only going to take XX's word for it. I also understand that what she's putting up here is to support her opinions and views but she did it in a way that was smartly laid out. At the end of the day, I know it's her view and opinion and she's defending herself. (I do share her opinion that GT is cringey to watch but I also admire how GT has leveraged on her fame to raise the issue of climate change) My original comment is a comment on the fact that XX's haters often underestimate that XX is quite intelligent. That's it. Her past dramas has already established that and I find it amusing when XX owns them. What Grape Jiuce could have done is point out the flaws in XX's logic and facts instead (like you did) and opened up a discussion instead of, 'you think this is smart... you must be a kid'. How is that contributing to the issue of climate change? By the way, i'm curious what was the facts that were off? My take, if anyone is interested in my opinion is Big Companies have pushed the narrative of how saving the environment as the responsibility of individuals. These companies, they need to start taking responsibility of how they have contributed to the issue and start taking measures to prevent more damage from happening.
@OliviaChoong

@@janessasanio I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I think Grape Juice is exasperated lol, so he/she is speaking in this manner. Thanks for elaborating, and yes I think XX is smart and this video is well structured to give herself credibility although my opinion is that some things are better left to the experts. I can see why people think Greta is cringey, it is also important to note that her response is targetted to world leaders and not us, and youths are given a platform to speak at COP events, so all the adult men should not be so triggered lol. And yes, so true about how big companies should take responsibility for the consequences. I'm going to cut and paste what I said to someone else in the comments section: For example the part about climate models - she said that scientists don't agree on one climate model - this is due to uncertainties. Here is a quote from Science News to clarify that point, "That’s because the simulations use the same equations to look at past and future climate conditions. And many simulations still struggle to re-create accurately the climate of very warm time periods in the past, such as the Eocene Epoch. As the world gets hotter, it turns out, the uncertainties start to ramp up. “Nobody is arguing about whether [the temperature increase will be] less than 2 degrees,” Gettelman says. “We’re arguing about the high end.” Skeptical Science notes that "climate models have already predicted many of the phenomena for which we now have empirical evidence". Also her point about the correlation between temperature and CO2 and how we have had more CO2 in the past but temperatures were cooler -- It is important to note that CO2 sets the temperature and is a key factor in controlling climate but not the only factor because ocean cycles can also contribute to lowering the temperature among other factors. During the time that C02 levels were higher and temperatures were cooler, the sun was also dimmer and Skeptical Science states that "Recent research has uncovered evidence for lower ocean temperatures during the Ordovician than previously thought, creating ideal conditions for a huge spurt in marine biodiversity and correspondingly large drawdown of CO2 from the atmosphere through carbon burial in the ocean." She says there is growing ice in Antarctica (this was unexplainable), actually it started melting some years back (it was reported last year that in 2017 the ice was at a record low) and overall we have ice loss globally. With more CO2 in the atmosphere, yes there is more plant growth due to carbon fertilisation, but scientists don't know how much CO2 is increasing plant growth because plants need more than just C02 to grow, excess CO2 is also making oceans more acidic which affect marine life.

Actually, plastic bangs and items are invented to NOT be single use. It was invented so that people can keep reusing it. The problem isnt that we are using plastic, its that we are using singe use plastic and using too much of it. YES metal and bamboo and straws made from other materials does have more negative impacts than plastic ones in terms of producing and sourcing. THAT is why you dont buy these types of straws if you wont use it. All in all, the baseline is to reduce the amount you consume, even if you choose a sustainable option. Also, your arguments against wind and solar power are outdated, as the technology already exists to store the power generated.

I agree about the plastic bags. The irony of me not getting a bag for free to carry my groceries home and to line by garbage cans, is that I need to buy them! I also tried to leave my blue recycling bin outside on pick up day instead of putting everything in a bag and it was refused because it needed to be in a plastic bag! So my reusable plastic bin of recycling was refused because it needed to be in a single use plastic bag.
@MagicalKid
@MagicalKid 4 роки тому
But you also need to consider the fact that most bin bags are bought to line bins whereas not everyone uses plastic carrier bags to line bins and many end up in the ocean which is the main problem. Not to mention the size and thickness difference, you would need around 3 normal carrier bags to carry the same amount of rubbish as one bin bag. In the UK only general waste require bin bags, food waste are disposed in biodegradable bags that are provided and recyclebles are collected in reusable boxes. So I guess your local council needs to look into that.

This is actually a very good video, it doesn't push either side, but it helps redirect people towards the multi-layered reasoning required for actually finding solutions to these problems. The only thing I disagree with is physical pollution. I wouldn't propose plastic restrictions or heavy taxes, because while plastic is massively overused for literal mountains poorly designed products that never get used, at the same time so much innovation has come from free markets and their access to cheap manufacturing... so many things we now take entirely for granted were designed by small people that would have never gotten their idea off the ground if the costs to prove the worth of the product were too prohibitive. BUT with that said, that doesn't mean that as a society we can't move towards making wiser choices for ourselves, which change the market purely based on what people are buying/consuming. You scoff at metal straws, but really... switching to using a couple metal straws (or none at all) + re-useable cups (even if you replace the whole set every 1-2 years) plus things like re-using plastic bags as trash bags, buying huge versions of cleaning products and drinks to continually re-fill the smaller bottles.... the difference in plastic waste for some people amounts to entire rooms worth, per person, per year, and it even saves you money in bulk discounts, with no extra soap/water use as long as you buy multiple so you can wash everything at the same time alongside your dishes. The re-use mentality can be very helpful to a community as well, but people are so shortsighted these days. I've had friends that just throw away (and in the process destroy) perfectly good unopened food, furniture, gadgets, all sorts of things. Taking 5 minutes to make a post on facebook to see if anyone could use them, or to find a place to donate it on the way to work could easily bring some joy to someone else's life while at the same time reducing the landfill and slowing overproduction.

Valid points~ there is always this sense of entitlement that people forget. Geographically being in SG is already one and because of that, we get to make conscious and better choices too. Whether certain decisions like solar energy or taxing is better - its often beyond our control as everyday citizens, other than quiet protests. What we can do is to be smarter consumers and not take everything at face value. Make your own conscious decisions. I don’t impose my beliefs on other people to reduce plastics, I know I can’t live without it but what I can do is A) find alternatives - use box packaging or fruits and vegetable Ziplock to store certain trash, B) bring my own containers. Sure one persons effort may seem meagre, but we have the power to do better and inspire other people or simply to adopt a good mindset of being more scrupulous and frugal with our lifestyle.

I totally agree with you! Except the part where you mentioned that the wastes in singapore like plastic bags and straws are incinerated. What happens if you dont live in singapore? Your wastes still ends up somewhere and we don’t know how they will process these wastes. Of course what we can do to “save the environment” is to reduce waste, and maybe recycle, but I feel that it’s all part of the circle of life. We can’t immediately change everything even if we all became vegans, stop using plastic and plant more trees, it’s just not as simple as that. The simplest way is to destroy all mankind, all living organisms, then the “environmental chaos” can be solved. Or so you think, if all humans and living organisms don’t exist anymore, it will lead to other things that nature itself will deal with. This would be too lengthy for me to explain, but in general, we can’t change what’s meant to happen, but we can help to improve and sort of “change” some of the outcome, but in the end, nature will still take its course. So at the end of it all, we’re still fcked, bc first of all not everybody has the same mindset, and 2, you can’t control and change everything. There are so many other factors involved like what xiaxue mentioned. Ok i’ve rant enough. Great video tho.

She is completely misinterpreting the graphs as well as cherry-picking graphs from no-linked sources. How were Co2 emissions measured thousands of years ago? They weren't, they were simply estimated. That is not comparable to proven emission results we have of present day and does not deny the fact that the emissions are going up exponentially every year worldwide. Ice caps in Antarctica and the Arctic are melting much faster than previously expected, having already begun accelerated release of organisms of infectious diseases and plagues from centuries ago from the permafrost to the top level. They have also given way for numerous floods everywhere, even in places where floods are unheard of. Colder areas are experiencing prolonged heat waves. Furthermore, you don't say a word about what will hapoen if we we don't do something about our fossil fuels, which have been proven time and time again to be contributing to climate change and global warming on the extreme scale, being generally not a viable source of fuel in the long term regardless of environmental impact. Even if climate change wasn't a threatening reality, fossil fuels will do enough damage on its own to ourselves. We need to be moving to alternative options like fusion nuclear and renewable energies NOW if we want to sustain as a species and help the planet.

HERAAN M the points arguing against human-caused climate change are nevertheless misleading.

Stwinge44 I mean this video did bring up a lot of good points for both sides and we as a community need to think about both sides for the coin not just one side. After watching this video now I understand why not a lot of people like Greta. She really is speaking from privilege and not taking account of a lot of things when she talks about this issue she clearly lacks a lot in what she brings to the table.

@@hekoma_uwu145 Just feel the need to reiterate there is hardly "both sides" when it comes to whether human-caused climate change is real. As for Greta, I think many misunderstand her - she's just calling attention to the issue (listen to the science) and it's not fair that she be blamed for so many various things.

I really loved the video! I agree with Xiaxue and I believe she knows a lot more about the world compared to Greta.
