Nico Rosberg was a very interesting driver when he was in F1, often overlooked and not talked about enough in my opinion, but when he was given the opportunity he grabbed it with both hands and was able to win a championship in 2016. Even after this amazing achievement, I've always felt that he's one of the most underrated drivers of all time, and in this video I explain why...

James Healey Might be due to the fact that he beat Michael towards the end of his career, and that he beat Lewis in a season where he had multiple retirements/grid penalties due to engine failures.

I mean hamilton and nico were friends at the very beggining of their racing carreer in karts and was pretty equal on their speed but then being regarded as a number 2 driver suddenly must really damaged him mentally in some way (watch yankeef1's video on "how to beat hamilton" and things are explained there)

People give him shit for leaving right after he won the WDC, but when you consider the Type-A personalities that are typical in F1, was nice to see a bloke who was so grounded in reality for a change. He didn't care at all about records, or wanting to be considered among the greatest. His dream was to win the WDC, and seeing how much of his family life he had to give up in order to achieve that, decided that his family was more important and chose to walk away having achieved his life long goal. Gotta give the man kudos for having the guts to make such a big decision like that.

All Nico wanted is to get the monkey off his back being the 'Son of a World Champion', riding the coattails off the great Keke's shadow. It wasn't fair for him of course, but for sure, he got a much easier path compared to others because of the connections. I wouldn't called his 2016 Crown 'lucky' because he truly had to work harder than he ever been. He sacrificed a lot more than he bargained for, including his own marriage at times, to spent every single second figuring out how to beat Lewis. Even as I said, the Sepang engine failure for Lewis while leading was the 28 points gap swing that ultimately decided the championship. But the winner each season often finds his own 'luck' in the end. So Nico's 2016 was truly deserved. I think the fans really wanted to see Nico compete in the 2017 season, myself included, because winning the championship is one thing. Defending is the different animal altogether. Lewis definitely wasn't surprised when Nico hung up his helmet only days after he took the trophy in Monaco. Nico even said it on Graham Benzinger's interview (available on UKposts). He had absolute nothing left, nothing to prove. Also the 2017 cars are much bigger, faster and heavier. They are absolute beast and Nico would be completely outclassed by Lewis. Nico has his own UKposts Channel these days and he is being candid. Even his retired colleagues who raced in other categories, such as Massa in Formula E, often joked how out of shape he was because he was complaining about his discomfort of driving a Formula E car at full speed after a few laps! So there are some truth to this. He was happy with his decision to retire and he is successful in his own business investments. It works out well for him. Like him or not, let's hope that he can be even more successful in his own endevours.

It was already decided. You can't judge the head to head performances just on one season 'unless' that's how long that they had raced for. Certainly, most will rate Lewis among the Best currently. But probably with the likes of Fangio, Schumi, Clark, Senna and Prost when he retires sometimes in the future. He beats Alonso in his rookie season, drove Fernando absolutely insane that he had to resort to sneaky tricks, such as purposely stalling his car in Q3 at the pits to prevent Lewis to get a better time at the Hungarian GP 2007. This was not necessary for a 2 times defending World Driving Champion. Anyhow, even the best can be beaten. Even the legends can be beat by their own teammates. But it is the overall score that will count the most. Lewis got beaten once by both Jenson and Nico. Both World Champions I might add, but Lewis got the upper hand by 2:1 and 3:1 convincingly in his careers in their prime. We really didn't see it in Michael Schumacher, simply because there was a clause in his teammates that they could not be ahead of him unless he was behind or out due to retirement or mechanical issues. Honestly, we wouldn't know just how good Irvine, Barrichello, and Massa really were. As well, his teammates at Benetton could say similar things too. Simply because they weren't given equal cars or the team like Mercedes let the drivers fight in equal terms. Let's face it, Nico admitted that Lewis is a much better driver than he is. So there is nothing more to him than just proving he could win 'one' championship to ensure his legacy equaling his great father in 1982. He didn't want to forever living in that shadow forever. So he has to beat Lewis just one time. Congrats to him and he did well in 2016. Albeit that engine blown up in Malaysia for Lewis while leading was the critical factor.

He said in his candid interview with Graham Benzinger. I would highly recommended watching the entire thing. Along with Lewis Hamilton and Niki Lauda, you will find out and piecing everything about Nico and Lewis' time at Mercedes. Nico admitted that he put all the eggs in the basket in 2016. In his own UKposts Channel, he went on and explained to the extent he was trying to keep his weight down. For example, his own helmet did not have the normal gloss finish as the standard ones with the F-1 pilots. He calculated that a coating or two off would shave hundredths of seconds from a lap. Over a race distance, that would probably be anywhere between half a second to seventh-tenth of a second. Still a margin between winning and losing. When you go into that extreme in the well, you wouldn't have anything left at the end. That's what he did. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/pH6gqJ5pa35y0YE.html

I have to agree. A lot of other drivers were as well. The problem in this sport is that there are only so many good cars available each season. Formula 1 is never a 'spec car' series where drivers can race in equal cars. Each team must built their own car, otherwise, it wouldn't be called 'Formula 1'. So with many talented drivers out there. All of them won championships in their respective junior categories. Some got the chances and others simply did not. It might be just dumb luck, but most of the times, it is the often the best drivers driving the best cars. It has always been in this sport. However, the playing field was somewhat more even in the past. And I am talking in the 1960s and the 1970s, where without a huge budget, you can get an out the shelf Ford DFV engine and you can compete against the factory Ferrari and other teams with a relatively decent chassis. As a result, we saw teams like Ligier, March, Shadows and the bottom team claiming victories. We are hard pressed to see the last miracle of such happened back in 2008 when Vettel won in a wet and cold Monza track with a Toro Rosso, or Panis won in a mixed wet - dry Monaco track with only 4 cars finishing in 1996. Hopefully the cost cap reduction will make the racing better in the future. However, the best team will often wins.

I liked Kamui. He was quick and clean overall, unlike some drivers he took his chance to get a podium finish. The problem is that he came into F1 without sponsors so it was predictable that he would lose his drive at a stage. The final blow came when he got beaten by the pay driver Perez.

And you could argue from the butterfly affect, that Rosberg would have drove harder had Hamilton won (and be finished P4 because Seb spun him around), since Hamilton went on a winning streak just like Rosberg after USA 2015. The only championship I think where you can really claim the other driver deserved to win in recent memory was 2005 with Kimi Raikkonen.
@ThePradBitt
@ThePradBitt 4 роки тому
One thing that really changed in 2016 was Nico's mindset. He actually accepted the fight on the track with Lewis now and started to drive harder and a bit dirty at times, which Lewis had already done for years. Nico was never able to overtake or fight Lewis before, because he just pushed him wide or drove so hard against Nico to defend his lead, that it was either stay behind or crash. And Lewis has always been the team favourite when it came to this particular driving style. I can't remember the race, but Nico tried one time to not chicken out before 2016 and immediately the team called him out afterwards, while Lewis could do whatever he wanted in that regards. All those little things added up, which did lead to the controversal incidents in 2016, where Nico didn't look too good and for which he was criticized a lot. But he needed to drive on the edge in order to overcome Lewis, as anyone else would need to in the same car.

Who was given lewis' technique for fuel conservation after he won 4 races in a row? Nico. Who ran lewis wide in canada 2014 start? Nico. Who ran his teammate onto the grass in spain 2016 while defending the lead? Nico So please please tell me why do you think lewis was the bad guy who started this? @@RobJP94 He scored better because his competitor was held back due to many mechanical issues. If Hamilton only had a little less bad luck, he still would've had way more than Rosberg, yet winning the WDC. Didn't beat him, he scored more.

You’re probably not gonna see this, but I really think you should make a podcast- we’d all absolutely love to hear you ramble about f1 for an hour straight

The reliability issues hit Hamilton in qualifying more in 2016 which you glossed over. Nico definitely won due to better reliability luck, however i no doubt agree that he deserved a title due to how well he managed to challenge Lewis

I’d say he’s less underrated more forgotten about And when he was still driving people were too focussed on him vs hamilton to consider how highly rated he is

I feel that Nick Heidfeld was very underrated as a driver. I also feel that he did get a proper chance in Formula 1 if I recall correctly!!!

I guess I am not recalling things quite correctly in regards to Nick Heidfeld. Actually looking back, he was in Formula One for a little over 10 years. I'm not sure if I'm not calling this correctly but I feel that he was never in a situation where his true talent was optimized. I think if Nick Heidfeld was in a better situations he definitely would have won more races.

The background music is so distracting I can’t even focus on what you’re saying. Please remove. Love your typical content though this video is just way off due to the music.
