ILBE Assault Pack - Updated Review
Agenda Free Link : eBay.com
Weight : 3lbs
Size : 10w x 8d x 19"h., 3 lbs.
Materials :
725 Cordura fabric
YYK
I went back and checked and I paid $25 for mine years ago.
On eBay, these are going for $120 all the way up to $300 which is not even remotely worth it for this pack unless you are a surplus collector and you simply have to have one.
There is a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 version with very little difference. Main the colors and the buckle brand.
I’ve heard this referred to as a “Go to Hell” pack because it’s designed to attach to the outside of the Main Pack and if things go to Hell you can grab your small pack, dump the big one, and make your getaway with your critical gear.
This pack was based upon the Charlie pack which was developed Arc’teryx; The Charlie pack wasn’t available very long and I believe the reason to be this;
It was way too expensive of a pack for how uncomfortable it was.
With the ILBE, it was developed by Arc’teryx and was made by Propper.
You can find on rare occasion the Arc’teryx version of this assault packs and they can be as expensive as $300 or $400!
• MOLLE compatible Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) grid
• Adjustable sternum, waist and quick release shoulder straps
• Hydration system tube exit holes
• Quick release padded shoulder straps
• Padded back with removable plastic panel
The Military Surplus USMC Assault Pack was designed to be attached to the Improved Load Bearing System (ILBE) backpack or carried on shorter missions by the United States Marine Corps.
The Assault Pack has a capacity of 1,500 cubic inches and can handle loads weighing up to 40 pounds.
Constructed from 725 Cordura fabric
Haul handle
Compression Straps
Summary :
Usually I go over the pros and cons and then a summary with my reviews but in this case, I’m going to summarize my thoughts first and then move on to everything else.
Over the years, I have found this to be a pack that I reach for less and less.
First, the pack simply isn’t as comfortable as many other options out there.
Second, ventilation is TERRIBLE.
Third, the price of this pack has reached very high levels which I wouldn’t personally spend.
All in all, for everyday average use, there are better backpacks out there in my opinion and while I like this pack for the military factor, there are better options available that are much more realistically priced.
Pros :
Tough as nails! Very well made.
Very basic pack; no bells, no whistles.
Can carry a lot of weight….
Think of this assault pack like an old truck. It gets the job done but with no luxuries.
Good compression straps which stabilize your loadout well
Can be attached to the main ILBE Rucksack - if you want to connect the two packs, make sure that you have matching generations - a gen 1 assault has to be connected to a 1 ruck, a gen 2 with a gen 2
I like the Marpat camo
Size is good for day hikes - can be used for an overnight trip only if you are going very minimal with your gear.
Expansion possibilities are present thanks to webbing.
Weight isn’t overly bad for this being a military backpack
Cons :
Not comfort for warm weather use - the shoulder straps when this pack is loaded is simply not comfortable.
Back panel is a solid sheet and ventilation is terrible.
Materials will absorb a lot of moisture
Shoulder buckles tend to dig into your ribs
When it is colder and you’re wearing additional layers, this pack is much more comfortable.
Only two pockets make organizing hard….or easy depending on what type of systems that you use. I use kit bags and it’s extremely easy but if you don’t, this could be a con.
Not a large pack but if you need additional space, adding some MOLLE compatible utility pouches is very easy to do.
I mentioned before that I like the Marpat camo but there is a con to this - on the trail it doesn’t matter all that much but camo patterns in public tend to be noticed and there is a negative impression that many people have. The best rule of thumb in life is to go unnoticed and solid color pack makes that possible and more likely.

I paid 80 for a surplus medium ruck a few months ago. Yeah, it has the "beloved" ACU camo pattern, but, it's durable. I would never spend a penny over 120 for a backpack, and for that price, I'd expect a 3-day military pack. Probably going for 260 right now. Ridiculous.

As a United States Marine Machine Gunner, I thought that was a great pack. Everything has ups and downs. My advice is get thicker skin for those that want to put this pack through it’s paces. This pack does what it was designed to do. I never felt that it was uncomfortable (however the Marine Corps isn’t about making sure you’re comfortable) and it performed admirably. You did a good review, though. I’m probably very biased since I used it for an enlistment. Keep up the good reviews bro. I enjoy your input on equipment.

@@LeatherNeck0331M What I was saying, was, I got the same pack for 80 bucks because it was the "beloved" (sarcasm) UCP. The Marpat was around 260. I opted for a 10 dollar dye kit, instead, lol. 90 bucks instead of 260.

+JMV-VN Hahaha, it's funny because it's true. I do stick with surplus rucks tho, as they will be doing great and in great condition way after most civvy rucks would have a strap break, zipper break, a buckle crack, and so on. Even feeling the fabric on a civvy ruck that costs 3 times more, and feeling good surplus, you can feel the difference between military gear and hiking and camping gear even with touch, before you even put it on, IMO anyway. A lot of civvy gear's material feels "tissuey" when you compare them. Before the 2020 elections, I could foresee the gun rights thing and stocked up on ammo, mags, and a couple more guns, including a third AK. Since I already have a Russian "Vest Alpha" chest rig and Spetsnaz Tactical Vest for my additional/original 2 AKs, I bought a Condor chest rig to go with the newer AK, just to keep something loaded up and ready for it ). Flimsy buckles, the "light weight" ballistic nylon feels REALLY light weight, and the mag pouches are a tight fit ( especially at first, then it gets better and easier with continued use, and it already looks as if the lugs want to run a trench along the lengths of the double 30s mag pouches, to where I'm almost afraid the mag pouches may start getting holes in them ) getting 2 7.62x39mm AK mags in the double mag pouches. I will always stick with surplus for rucks, combat boots ( I won't buy another set of hiking boots, however they may be highly touted ), chest rigs, tac vests, and so on, it's worth the extra $100 + to get them

There are a lot more than 2 variants- Gen 1, and Gen 2 of each of 3 versions- Assault, Recon, and Corpsman. The Recon and Corpsman packs are essentially the same( some are even marked" Recon Corpsman"), with the difference being the organizers and frame( Recon has added aluminum stays), both are larger than the standard Assault and you can add the ILBE lid to either .

Marine Corps: TOGR says our old pack is obsolete? Reintroduce it to the inventory. Can't have the Devil Dogs with functional and comfortable gear. I remember when we swapped over from ALICE to MOLLE. Everybody was like "cool"...until you saw all of those clips and straps, packs that couldn't hold anything so you needed attachments and then plastic packframes that snapped during humps. I'm shocked Uncle Sam hasn't brought it back lol. This thing actually worked. I still have mine...pretty sure in a few years it'll be near 20 years old. Crazy.

The good news is that MOLLE and ILBE sucked so badly that it basically created the modern tactical gear market that's full of way better alternatives (almost non of which will ever actually get issued, and probably a bunch of which will be forbidden by pencil pushers for one reason or another.)

I like this pack for a day hike or an overnighter. It doesn't need load lifters because you'll be carrying less than 40 pounds, and at 1500 cu in, probably more like 25 pounds. Organize your gear with ditty bags. Use a trash compactor bag as a liner. But I wouldn't pay much more than $60 for it.

@MoH-lk1yj 2 роки тому
First off, love the video. I bought one of these in MARPAT, and I used it for a graduate certificate class in finance. Sure, got some weird looks. It was cheap - around the 25$ range at the time. Not a bad deal. I also once had a flight attendant stop me and tell me "You Are Awesome". Not sure, but figured it was because of the camoflage backpack. A week or so ago I purchased an Arcteryx Charlie in Woodland M81 camo. Yep, I am a collector. Added a sustainment pouch and two zipper pouches in matching M81 to the pack. These are well built. Both by Propper and Arcteryx. I could carry rocks in this pack for our stream restoration project, no problem. At a certain point, the thing is uncomfortable and overloaded, but it will KEEP CARRYING ROCKS for months. Anything else might just fail. Here's what I see as the trick - the people carrying these packs aren't wearing Tshirts. I bet these packs would shred a T shirt or undershirt over time. The people carrying these packs are wearing a T shirt with a BDU shirt or "work shirt" over it. So, of course they are less comfortable to wear than a Topo designs pack or a Mystery Ranch if closer to the flesh, right? It is akin to an argument over whether Scarpa Fuegos are better than Minnetonka Moccasins or not. The difference maker here in the analogy is the socks. So buy one for cheap, fill it full of granite, and start making Zuni bowls in your local, average creek. I do not think load lifters would have added anything, because you're usually not carrying 40+ pounds of rock. That, and keep the straps away from your flesh if you're sensitive. If users are complaining that the thing has not enough pockets, then WTF, use the molle or sell it for 500$ to someone else, I suppose. Me, I'd just use 10$ pouches from Academy to organize stuff inside instead. Strong agree that the ILBE is overpriced. $500 is definitely too much for an Arcteryx Charlie right now. I certainly didn't pay that much. At that point, why not just cry and buy a GoRuck instead, for cheaper!

If I want to convert myself into a pack mule, I prefer my Molle2 pack with the external frame. It doesn't sit against your back like an ILBE and it's more comfortable than an Alice. It mostly gets use when I'm doing trail maintenance and need to carry a bunch of heavy tools or if I'm going to base camp somewhere with a cast iron dutch oven. You can also carry an elk quarter back to your vehicle with one.

Military grade sounds sweet to everyone one except those who have been in the military. When me and my fellow devil pups heard someone say something is military grade, we would cringed, because most military equipment is made by the lowest bidder. Hell it wasn't uncommon for humvees and other equipment to randomly catch fire. They gave us the standard 2p tent in the Philippines, which had several holes in the mesh and rain fly, coupled with 95 degree Temps at near 100% humidity. I ditched the tent and used a E tool to dig a ditch 1 foot deep in the sand, lined that bad boy with poncho and racked out. Outstanding AF.

You should review some Russian Mountain Gorka suits: SPLAV (high end), BARS (SF units) and SPOSN (Old School). They’re pretty rugged 2 toned water resistant/impregnated tent canvas, newer versions take advantage of more breathable materials and these are used for hunting, fishing, military and etc. The suits run around from $100-$400. You get a well built anorak/jacket, trousers with rock/tick trap and maybe suspenders. While too hot in the summer I think the trousers are a great canvas alternative for those attempting to keep the ticks from crawling up their legs when hiking in the winter or fall.

I know I am old, but when I was in, we were issued A.L.I.C.E. packs, because of my specific unit, we had the LARGE LRRP A.L.I.C.E. most of the things you dont like on that one are not there for our pack. and as for "bullet proof" I still have my large pack, and use it from time to time. the reason most military packs are bucket style is because a lot of the gear we had to carry was large and unusual shaped. I am glad I never had to carry this one. as for camouflage in town? it really depends on where you are. I prefer black for my around town bags, but in this whole county wearing camo is so common it IS the "grey man" color. I was at the grocery last night and easily 1/3 of the people in the store were wearing some camo. a few were in BDU pants, or blouses, and several had M65 field jackets. Hell, showing my age here a little, I still have the OD M65 that was "retired" shortly after I got out of basic, but instead of turning in for a camo one, I bought the camo and held the OD back. no one in my county bats an eye when I wear it around town. or even notices the name tape, rank, or RANGER tab on it. Before they switched to that gore-tex POS field jackets, the old canvas was resistant to flame and heat, resistant to abrasion, and fairly easy to keep clean and ready to go. with the addition of the liner, it is a great jacket, that is why I still wear it so much.

I picked up the main ruck and the assault pack years ago for $100 when they first hit the surplus market. I think at that price point, it's good enough for most people and the cons can be overlooked. I look at the pricing of the newer stuff and I figure I can make do with the ilbe for a while longer.

The reason why the ILBE pack uses a flat back is because it's designed to go on top of your armor. This pack wasn't designed to be worn with a regular shirt; try wearing it with a plate carrier.

At least out here in small town Oregon its only current/recent military camos that are likely to draw attention, a hunting or woodland camo is common enough that if its not a weird time to be wearing a pack, you'll go by largely unnoticed.

Three rows of PALS on the side is not enough. I had to add one more above to get 4 rows in total. The number of front slots are also odd. Any pouch in the market has 5 slots width to mount this pack? Mine is Multicam version of this ILBE from Arcteryx and exactly paid 200$ including shipping to my country back in 2007. It's still working in good shape today as an EDC and has seen some heavy hiking. You may think of it as tough as a bomb proof but in my experience, all nylon gears are defeated by sunlight and its heat. Never dry it after washing on direct sunlight. BTW, the second unused one with tag still in my stock as a spare.

It's now 3.25.2024 and I just ordered an ILBE from ARMY NAVY and chose it based on comfort recommendations over the FILBE. The ILBE was the same cost of the FILBE with all 3 components. I liked the value of having an assault pack and hydration carrier. All I've seen is the same, getting a matching assault pack is now just not plausible. guess I'll have to mix and match. Then I found out about the recon versions and holy smokes the recon assault is like $550

I purchased my USMC ILBE gen2 ruck and assault pack for 90 bucks back in 2014. The assault pack is definitely not great but ok for an assault or day pack. I can squeeze in enough gear for and emergency overnight, here's my assault pack gear list... 3L water bladder Sawyer Micro Squeeze water filter Laplander folding saw Watch cap, USMC Socks, wool Gloves, gortex Neck gator, USMC Pillow, inflatable Poncho, USMC Liner, poncho, zippered, USMC Plastic sheet 4'x8' Tarp, ripstop, 3x3 meters w/ 40' quick deploy ridge line & 6 titanium stakes 550 cord, 4@9' 1@20' 3 magazines, 30 rd m4 Cleaning rod Batteries 4-AA, 6-AAA, 1-2036, 1-DL1/3N When packed the back becomes rounded and doesn't play well with body armor as it rolls from side to side. It may not do that if you use the wast strap but I don't use it. All in all it will work its just not the best thing out there.

Funny about Camo. A pack that size Camo in Australia in the City, no big deal really. There seems to be a big civvie market for camo. As in there is a lot of civvie clothing Tshirts, jox, singlets, hoodies, cotton trousers, track pants,, jackets, in non military desert woodland, god knows what camo. Its on cheap backpacks. Major outdoor stores stock Carribee backpacks, in Auscam or Coyote, 2 choices lol. Anoconda even stocks camo here.

No way I would pay no more than 40 for that. I bought the ruck that goes with for 80 or 90 nearly new and had the small radio pouch and topper for the bag.. I like it for camping or hiking. I would use that assault pack for fishing equipment, pack and go. I currently use the army versio for that currently.

Think this is expensive, look at the Triple Aught Design Fastpack EDC or Lightspeed. I have the Lightspeed and it’s unbeatable in terms of form factor, build quality and fit. The military packs like this and the Arcteryx Leaf Assault are designed to be worn with body armor, hence the flat back.
