I can tell how much you miss your bro. The time back when you are young seemed to stand still and when you reminisce about it now you realize how fast it actually passed. I hope you and your brother can get together again and camp in a snow storm like the old days. Thanks for bringing back some memories for me and sharing the tranquility of nature.

Oh to be young again, what an adventure! The closest I have come to something like this is the time, many years ago now, me and my then wife drove through a blizzard to a state park in southern Ohio. We had rented a cabin for the weekend and the owners were amazed that we showed up. The snow was deep enough that we could only make it half way up the driveway to the cabin. The storm finished up that night and rest of the weekend was spent hiking to the various caves and waterfalls in an amazing winter wonderland. Snow was almost knee deep, but powdery and easy to walk through. The stillness and solitude was awesome! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful adventure.

So love you sharing your experiences, Luke. I'm a retired science/environmental ed professor and I regularly had my students out on real world field trips doing authentic research on water quality, birds, forests, etc. Your comments about your childhood trips to the woods resonate with me as my parents too turned me loose. we lived in the country in IN so we didn't have the beautiful mountains but I had fun in our woods and every fall I camped out by the creek in a shelter I made from autumn cornstalks. Had my campfire and was "armed" with my Daisy bb gun. Those were the days. My friends on the farm and I would also make shelters out in the field with hay bales from the loft. Close to home but inside the shelter you felt like you were a million miles away living the life of Daniel Boone. I'm 71 now with a knee replacement so my long hikes are less frequent but I travel in my camper trailer all over the country and settle for day hikes to fly fish and like you, have a good cuppa joe in the woods. I've spent quite a bit of time in western NC and SW VA so I really identify with the turf you regularly visit. Beautiful part of the country. Anyway, thanks for all you do. Even though I've spent a life outdoors I learn something from almost every one of your videos I watch. Keep up the good work and keep having fun.

I’m 13 and last year I got a PC and phone. My parents are the same as yours. I sleep out in my field all the time building dens tarp shelters it’s just so great

I have some gear from almost 40 years ago when I was a cadet commander in Civil Air Patrol. And it STILL WORKS.

The enthusiastic attitude you posses, realistic advise and can do demonstrations are awesome. You also do it with simple, affordable gear. This is very uplifting to me. My brother and I lived outdoors when growing up and somehow survived. Those were different times and I feel sorrow for young people today who are not exposed to life away from technology and indoor boredom.

I hear you around your thoughts about your mom letting you out in the woods back in the day. I started solo backpacking when I was 14, going out in every season for 1-3 weeks at a time. There aren't many moms who'd drop their kids off at the edge of a wilderness, and sweetly and honestly say "Have a good time!" I am so very thankful that I had a mom who did. Of course, I never told her about the bears, the lightning storms, the rattlesnakes or the freezing nights. But that's just being polite. :)

One thing I've noticed with your campsite arrangements, is why don't you ever have the secondary tarp overlap with the tent, you have it separated and this time the door of the tent is facing away from the tarp. My thoughts are so that you would have a seamless entry into the tent without having to get wet at all. If possible I would have had a larger tarp cover both the tent and the secondary one. as an added layer of protection. When we used to camp, we damn near had a circus tent covering everything, including the 3 room tent and the cooking sitting area. Maybe we're more hardcore than most regular campers.

Your videos got me more excited & more prepper minded with camping, hiking or backpacking. It really is something else. I would love to camp again with my husband soon. It really refreshes my soul

Watching this in early 2024. I’ve spent almost the whole Christmas ‘23 holiday (which is quite lengthy in the UK) watching/catching up on your videos; they’ve become a bit of an obsession. I observe a) how much younger you look in this one and b) the focus on bushcraft is more evident in this older vid. Luke, you’re such a nice bloke.

I love your stories about your brother. I remember cold weather camping in Northern Illinois with my Boy Scout troop when I was young. Amazing how confidence building it is; I learned lessons I will never forget. I love it. Thank you for sharing!

Yes! My brother , neighbors and I would go out in the woods close to the house all weekend. Camping, building forts and treehouses. Coolest fort we ever made was in a huge briar patch! We spent days on our knees cutting into the middle. A common area in the middle to play cards and each of us made small room to put our sleeping bags in and camp all weekend! One of the neighbors dad bought us military rations in green cans to eat. GREAT MEMORIES!

You are bringing back so many memories of growing up in Up State New York where we ran wild on the original Indian Trails of the Mohawks and Senaca and Iroquis... The Trails went from water source to water source. I was usually the companion of an older brother who just passed away a short time ago.. and later I led my Younger Brother who also passed away a few years ago. There was 5 of us.... We made or shelters of Lean To Style from natural vegetation since we could not afford Tents. We carried three Wool Blankets rolled up to carry our supplies in and as our sleeping bags. Ever read the Book "Of Men and Mountains" by William O. Douglas, that was us until we came home from the Military in 1973 and could afford all the new Gear... Life was good... Thanks for sharing and the information in this project... I have two SnugPak shelters bought years ago and was looking that this tent and I do agree when the company was bought out by another company and had the products made in CHINA they went down hill and doubled and tripled prices.... I doubt they will be around long...

I'm late watching this one, but one of my favorites. All I could think of on the hike out - "Man, it's a lot of work to hike ahead, set up the camera to get a shot without footprints, hike back, hike forward, back to get the camera. In knee deep snow!" If I had the power, I'd make you an honorary Canadian.

Hi from New Zealand, I was raised on a dairy farm one of the boundary fences border a forest. Yea had no fancy outdoor gear just a Tarp and woolen blankets. Sometimes went camping with just the clothes we had on. Use to built tree huts, underground dig-outs setup camp in hay barns. Use to spotlight at night with air guns shoot mice, rabbits, and possums. When your young and full of energy your resilient and bulletproof to weather life is fun. I can go on and on about my childhood upbringing. I loved winter more than summer. Over NZ is an ozone hole and our summers are deadly dangerous. A lot of Kiwi's suffer from melanoma cancer as a result. Thank you for bringing back memoirs of my childhood, enjoy viewing your winter camping clips👍

As someone who's lived outdoors for 12.5 yrs in northwestern Montana I can tell you.that if you get a big enough rainfly tarp with multiple attachment points it's smart to throw a tarp over tents like that using paracord for a ridgeline then 2 carabiner with pressic knots off the carbiners to tension out the rainfly tarp and create a A Frame over the tent so snow and rain are shed off with the pitch. Another pointer is a backcountry avalanche shovel, MSR makes a good one and it's lite weight. Times are different, my parents would load us up on horses and we were just raised to know what was around. We always had 2 dogs with us and they were our eyes and ears at night. We always had a large caliber rifle and a pistol. Those times were priceless with my little brother. He passed 10 yrs ago. So I take my son out into the backcountry and teach him what my father taught me. It's a skillset that allows you to survive in nature and do it with a cool head. I absolutely love winter camping and I'm not discrediting that's alot of snow but a blizzard here at 8300 ft.dumps between 4 to 6 ft. It puts life into perspective when you can see the Northern Lights and just living life. Cheers mate

I’m am 67 year old woman and I remember being outside all the time hated having to go in at night.We lived next to our cousins and would sleep outside in yard with a blanket.We were so blessed weren’t we.Do kids nowadays even know about sleeping under the stars? I hope at least some of them do.What a great life.😊

I don't know why your videos are re-appearing in my feed 1 year late, but I certainly don't mind it! Haven't had a good winter camp in a while, and this brought back some memories. I see a lot of people suggesting doing extra stuff like having another tarp/cover above the tent etc, and I agree with a lot of it. If I had to only use the gear that you brought, then I would try to link the entrance of the tent with the tarp, so they extend their coverage in a single dry spot. Another creative way to deal with the snow buildup on a tarp like that, is to not secure it into the ground or trees themselves, but rather suspend it from trees with floating anchors to weigh it down (use rocks or branches as weights). With no snow buildup, the branches will weigh enough to extend the tarp fully and provide nice coverage - but the more snow builds up, the more the tarp weighs and pulls on the branches. With enough snow buildup, the tarp will cave in on its own and dump most of the snow, which then resets the weight and allows the branches to pull down and stretch out the tarp yet again. I think this is a fun way to build a maintenance-free tarp setup, but it does require a bit of fiddling to get the weight anchors right, and probably a few trial and error sessions. The key is to get the weight just high enough that the tarp can be stretched out fully with no snow buildup on it, and from then on the tarp will take care of the snow buildup itself :)

I love your enthusiasm! Also your appreciation of your great childhood. I'm a little older but grew up the same way. Always outdoors. My area wasn't quite as rural but we had a lot of woods and open land nearby. From age 10 on, NEVER left home without knife and matches. Lots of daytime adventures and also camping. Camping in the warm weather, we just laid sleeping bags on the ground without a tent. Nothing like watching the campfire light reflect off the leaves on the trees as you fall asleep. You really brought back the feelings of being outside and free.

I live in North Carolina and remember this storm going through. Where I lived at the time, we got 18 inches. Still remains the 2nd largest snow storm I've ever gone through.

Memories are what keeps us going brother., at 8 yrs old, I was gone all day in the mountains of Norway, exploring. Still to this day ,never winter camped, at least not for 3 days or more .always wanted too, couldn't ever find a crazy friend to do it with. Love the video brother! Rock! And stay safe.

Such an awesome video! I am a professional picture framer and watched/listen to this while working. The part I needed to stop and really listen to was when you were in the tent at night and you can hear the snow tickling the rain fly! I love that sound and have fallen to sleep hundreds of times to that sound. My 10 years as a Boy Scout leader are wholly engrained in my being. Thank you again for that video and as others mentioned, the stories of you and your brother were touching.

Wow - and thanks for reminding me of how much fun me and my brother had in the Catskill Wood growing up! Must of had the same parents - what a privilege to grow up being responsible for your safet and having parents who loved and trusted you enough to let you have great winter adventures. No cell phones or GPS - being in the forest away from civilization - amazing what a powerful contribution to being self reliant and confident in our ability to survive and enjoy adversity. I have to share my Grandaddy’s last hunting camp adventure. One of his son in laws brought his long cattle trailer with a real double bed in it for him & my grandmother. He had tarps over & around it. They made a huge kitchen with a wood stove is where I slept. I started hunting with my Grandaddy when I was just 3 yrs old. Such sweet memories!! Lot more to this but too much for putting it here.

I’m a bit new to ur channel Nov 2022, but viewing ur past videos and this one is so great. Love ur childhood stories. I grew up the same. Today I rarely see kids outside building forts and dragging every found junk contraption home. I grew up w/my 6 siblings camping all across the U.S., super great memories. I was the oldest. Fabulous times. Kids today truly are missing out on such free feeling healthy fun. Great video, thanks for sharing ur life.

Growing up in Northern Vermont back in the 70's and early 80's we used either alpine ski's or a specific type of snow shoes That the native Americans made which wasn't bad for breaking trail in the woods. They were round and very lite but very good at distributing your weight to keep you on top of the deep stuff. The modern snow shoes have their place especially if you traverse glaciers. I find it interesting the different types that the native Americans made across the country. Made for some interesting research.

100% on the freedom we had as kids. I feel bad for my boys as they will not understand the freedoms we had. I remember my best friend and I at the creek getting crawdads from sun up to sun down. I've been binge watching your videos and I want to thank you for bringing us along.

You were so right about being brought up in a different time. I was born in 77 and we had a huge path of woods in front of our house and every day my brothers and I all or friends went in there in the morning and didn't come out until it got dark (on the weekends and summer) then after school. We played all kinds of games made all the trails. Definitely a different time.

One of the tricks I use with my tarps is to not tie my guy lines to my tarp. Instead, I run the line through one hole of a two hole pumpkin clamp (the kind used to cinch a stuff sack). I then loop it through the grommet hole, and then back through the second hole of the pumpkin clamp and tie a stop knot on the loose end so it can’t pull back out. When I need to adjust my tarp, it is simply a matter of moving the clamp.

You should go get your brother and go camping together before it's too late
