It’s sad how fast an animals health can change so rapidly. I have a cat I named Peppy and when she was ten, she got really bad pneumonia and was looking for a place to die. I cut up everything, underneath the couches, chased her and told her I was not going to let her die on me. Got her treated and she will be 14 years old as well as her sister Sweetie and brother Ollie.

I am so heart broken by this poor beautiful kitty, I can see her having hard time to breathe, I wish I could just scoop her up and give her a lot of hugs and cuddles, she is so calm and tried so hard to breathe, I cried and was praying that she will make it through, vet doc is amazing to save her and babies, so hard to decipher what is going on in that little body and little organs. I adopted 4 cats one is handicap I always panic when I hear their cry. I don't want to see them sick and suffer and I don't want them put to sleep. I'm guessing it was a URI (Upper respiratory infection) the more severe the URI is, or the longer it's been left without treatment, the mucus build up in the lungs becomes harder to clear out. That's only my guess though, could be something completely different..

I've watched all of the Bondi Vet episodes on YT, so I have to wonder why no-one tried to drain the Fetty's lungs like in other similar cases? I can't help but feel not enough was done to save her and her babies. That said, the vet who operated on Wendy did a stellar job, would happily take my snake Vinz to her if I were in Australia and he needed help!
@fraukie1598
@fraukie1598 Місяць тому
You can't drain fluid out of lungs, that is just not possible. What you saw on other episodes must have been cases where the fluid builds up in the chest cavity, making breathing hard and can end up being fatal by "robbing" the lungs the space they need to expand during breathing. Those "free" fluids that build up in the chest or abdominal cavity can be drained. Though not without risk it is a short time solution that buys time to figure out the problem. But when the fluid is INSIDE the lung, like in this cat, it can't be drained, all a vet can do is administering a diuretic, also medicine that stimulates the kidneys and helps the body to get rid of fluids and hope that is works in time. So: This vet did everything she could and more than a lot of vets would have done. Seeing the lung that "good" on the ultrasound is a VERY bad sign already. Air is black on an ultrasound, so a healthy lung is hardly to examine that way at all. Then she also heard that the lungs sounded bad and the x-ray showed hardly any part of the lungs that is capable of getting Oxygen in and CO2 out. A lot of vets would have stopped trying and even that would have been understandable That looked really, really bad and the chances of getting enough oxygen into that cat until the diuretic had time to work where really slim and if that had worked the reason why the lungs are so bad would not even be diagnosed. The kittens did not stand a chance. Mummy cat was extremely skinny and even if she had by some kind of miracle pulled through her organism would not have been strong enough to heal and keep the pregnancy, let alone survive the birth and spare even more resources to lactate.. If she had pulled through and didn't loose those kittens it would have been sad but right by mummy cat to terminate the pregnancy. So: They did everything they could to save her, there was nothing else they could have done and most vets would haven "given up" while this one and her team where still fighting. Sometimes we can't help... no matter how hard we try and how much we want our patients to live.

I'm welcoming comments because I'm wondering why someone would go to a breeder when there are so many animals out there that are in dire need of a home? What's the difference between the love for a breeder dog or cat and any dog or cat desperate for a loving home? Unbiased love is what I'm talking about.
@ArtzyZero
@ArtzyZero Місяць тому
Animals are often in shelters for a reason sadly, behavioural issues, health issues, trust issues etc. and some can require very experienced owners to accommodate them. Adopting a kitten from a reputable breeder is very different to adopting a cat with a heart condition. Especially when it comes to pet insurance as not all insurance companies will cover already established long term health issues but can offer to cover long term conditions that develop after insurance has been bought. In my instance I live at the top of a block of flats and don't have access to a private, fenced in garden but do have an entire beach just a 5 minute walk away and several walking trails in the area. Adoption shelters I've reached out to ask about adoption have refused me either because of no garden access or the fact there's stairs. But if I were to buy a puppy I could teach that puppy to get used to me carrying them down the stairs and waiting until they've left the building to do their business and probably teach them to walk off the lead right to the beach. I can also desensitize my puppy so it doesn't react badly to things like being groomed, examined by vets etc. which would be harder to do with an adult dog. Basically it often boils down to a person's personal living circumstances and adopting, even with the best of intentions, isn't always the best thing. What matters is shopping responsibly and picking an experienced breeder who has traceable background and health checks for all their breeding animals and one that is happy to take the animal back if circumstances change and the new owners can't look after the animal.

@@ArtzyZeroI want to add that even animals that were brought to the shelter through no fault of their own (when I used to volunteer I saw SO many who were brought in because the owner could no longer afford to care for them) the very situation of being placed in a shelter can be traumatic in itself. It's better than the alternative of course, but IME it does take some work to get an adopted pet to start feeling comfortable in a home again, while the puppies my family has gotten from breeders settled in pretty quickly.
@eleanorcooke7136
@eleanorcooke7136 Місяць тому
Animals that are in shelters are usually there for a reason. Some animals were given up due to behavioral issues. Some animals eere given because their owner couldn't care for them any more but the environment of a kennel and shelter can be traumatising because they're not getting that bond that they need and they're constantly hearing other animals but often can't see them. Some animals are dropped off at shelters because they have health conditions that their owner couldn't afford to treat. My friend is about to have a baby and they are also looking at getting a puppy once they have settled in their new family life. They can't afford a dog with a pre-existing health issue and they can't risk getting a dog with behavioral issues as it could harm the baby.

All anyone can do is the best they can. It doesn't matter what field of work we are in or dealing with family, our partner, children or our own health, sometimes it will be successful other times we will collapse. Like with Doctors, nurses, police, firefighters and paramedics the job of a Veterinarian and even the staff, they are no different. They will try their best to help an animal, and sometimes they are successful but other times there is nothing they can do. I appreciate when they show death, because it reminds us how fragile life is and that not every episode is a happy ending. While it is indeed sad that the mother cat and her kittens suffered and passed, but perhaps it was the best for them. Because who knows how far along those kittens were, would they have survived and lived a happy healthy life had they been born prematurely or would they have suffered with long term health issues? At least she was in the hands of caring people before passing. Keep up the good work Bondi Vets and staff, your work and dedication is appreciated. ♥

I had a 22 year old cat die in Oct. 2023 of a similar illness. She lost a lot of weight as well. She had been to the vet who said she was dying of old age. I took her home to die at home instead of being put down at the vet's office. She lived almost 2 weeks after seeing the vet, and never lost her appetite. She still ate like a horse. 3 cans of food every day, and stole food from my other 2 cats as well. She died in my lap. (Jan Griffiths).

Since cats and dogs have a way shorter pregnancy then humans the window for puppies stand a chance if delivered to early is almost non existent and since no one expected her to be pregnant there was no way of telling how old the kittens were. In her situation she also would never have survived a c-section, so trying that would have meant sacrificing Fetti's life to deliver kittens who did not stand a chance. Also: if mommy suffers from getting no oxygen in and no CO2 out, so do the kittens and their tiny bodies were even more unlikely to make it than Fetti was and her chances were catastrophic when she came in already.
