97 version was an actual work of art

Both scenes are really well done. However one thing aside from '97 being easier to follow that I noticed is that you can see more of Griffith's reaction. In the movie he looks more stunned to have lost rather than scared shitless from having been a hair away from being cleaved in twain.

I love that in 1997, guts have hard expression on stopping the sword weight as soon as grifith sword broke, as he know when it hit it gonna be fatal

Movie shows how the clash looks to an outsider while series puts us in their perspective.

2012 animation is good, however, imo, it looks too pretty. It looks cleaner and colorful. I prefer 90s version dingy grounded aesthetic.

I like how in the original Griffith adjusts his sword and Guts his footing but they're swapped in the new version. Random small detail but I like that stuff.

I watched the original first then tried watching the movies and was very disappointed.

i get impresion that some ,,authority figure" on anime first said that 97 ver. is better and all the lemings followed trough just like with anything else in life. Its obvious 2012 animation is better by far but it does not award hipster you points to admit it.

the 1997 version try too hard to be like the manga. the 2012 version use its medium better, making a smoother scene, that paradoxically, feels more like the one from the manga.
