@@orbeezeater yes absolutely agree, he also needs therapy to help learn healthy coping skills. I'm not going to give him any shit for having addiction issues because that's not his fault but to think it's okay to drive under the influence and put himself and especially others in danger is not okay and he needs help to fix that. You can't be a 'better driver' under the influence. Definitely not acceptable. I hope he's doing better though.

I used to love this show as a kid when I thought "just be a better driver" was the answer, but its obvious that a lot these contestants just need therapy and long-term support. So many "reality shows" have interesting ideas, but they just can't help but exploit people who are actually struggling and putting them on display for everyone else to laugh at

I remember watching this show! I grew up in Alberta, and so many 'winners' came from Alberta, which wasn't too surprising to me. I too felt like this show was a bit exploitative. There was an 'All Star' season and there was this one girl, Angelina I think was her name? Anyways, she was clearly struggling with some mental health issues. They did eventually let her leave the show and helped her get into therapy. But they definitely didn't fail to use her for laughs before that came to a head.

I cried for real and she immediately saw my manager have some sympathy for me . . She didn’t like not being the center of attention for two seconds . CWD was probably my favourite reality show. Kurtis also left out the part about how they actually helped her get a mental health diagnosis and some counselling to get to the root of her issues. I disagree pretty strongly with him that they don't care about the contestants or their safety. If you watch a full season you get to see that the whole point of the driver rehab is to get people safe and comfortable on the road for their sake and for everyone else on the road as well, and if they don't feel like they can achieve that, they either have them admit they don't want to drive and make alternate plans, or they don't even give their licenses back sometimes. I've used some of their techniques (swerve and avoid, icy corner, etc.) in real life, the show was practical and not as sensationalized as he made it out to be. "I don't understand, like, why anybody would agree to go on this show." Honestly, because like you said Kurtis, we're desensitized to driving. It can literally be life or death to be a poor driver to a certain degree, and this show genuinely helped people to become better as they graduated.

The panic attack thing hit me SO hard. I actually don't have a license yet because of my anxiety, and I don't think it should be so normal and necessary to have a license to the point that people like me and Danielle would be forced to get one. It's actually so commendable that she purposefully sought out a job she can do at home so that she has to drive as little as possible. She shouldn't have been put on a show like this to "get over her fear", because - apart from the obvious danger - the pressure is not gonna make it ANY better! I myself live in a country with pretty good public transport, and over time my anxiety has gotten better so that I might go to driving school soon.

the funny thing about the shoemaker joke is that’s exactly how a lot of last names came to be , they’re called occupational surnames. For instance John the baker became John baker, Jack the blacksmith became Jack Smith, and Frodo the hunter became Frodo Hunter. Other occupational lastnames are Walker, Cook, Baxter(or Bakster which was the name for a women baker), and carpenter. There are also names that end in “son” that literally just mean “son of ____” (johnson, erikson, peterson, carlson)

When I was 16 and getting my license I had to practice drive on the highway. I distinctly remember beginning to merge and just feeling so terrified and overwhelmed, and I began to have a panic attack and because my parents had to be in the car they told me to just drive and suck it up. I had to pull into a rest stop to calm down and breathe because I felt too close to the other cars/going off the road and I couldn’t see from my tears and I was anxious that someone was going to crash into me and my parents were watching my every move. I love driving now but it was honestly so stressful and just difficult to do during that period in my life, and I had several other incidents throughout and they all really stemmed/occurred when my parents were there.

“I have to drink a couple beers to calm my nerves before driving.” So. Let me get this straight. You experience high levels of anxiety that make it difficult difficult for you to drive. And to solve this problem, instead of trying any combination of the following: going to your doctor/a psychiatrist to get anxiety medication prescribed, seeing a therapist to work on strategies for managing anxiety, looking up meditations and/or breathing exercises you could do before driving, putting on calming music or an audiobook/podcast while you drive, and taking public transportation when possible, you just went “Ah yes. Alcohol. That’ll fix it.” *How the fuck did you ever get your license???*

I really sympathize with the contestants who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I have autism (as well as other disorders) and I’m genuinely incapable of driving, but nobody believes me when I tell them that I can’t drive and my family has forced me to drive anyway despite being a danger to myself and others on the road. Unfortunately I live in an area with absolutely no public transportation and it’s impossible to walk anywhere, and being 18 and having everyone drive you around is quite embarrassing. I wish that people would understand that, like you said, nobody HAS to drive and some of us need mental help. If only there was more public transportation for us :/

yo same!! im also autistic and have really bad fear of roads in general (i've had reoccuring nightmares about being forced to drive for years & i have panic attacks when i think abt having to drive anything), and people don't understand why i don't want to drive, because i don't trust myself to be able to be safe on the roads. & i totally feel the same, being 18 and having to get yr parents to drive you places fucking sucks!! so many people view not learning to drive as "immature" or "lazy" but our society be set up so that if you cant drive your quality of life suffers. i dont have a drivers license, which means i dont have an ID (im working on getting one) so theres shit i cant do because society just assumes that every person over 16 has a drivers license. we desperately need to normalize not driving and better public transport, for disabled + neurodivergent people as well as people who can't afford a car or have their drivers license revoked and still need to go to their jobs

Yeah, I feel for them. I have anxiety and when I was 15 right after I started driving I had a pretty traumatic experience driving and couldn’t bring myself to do it again until I was like 20 or 21, so like... I had anxiety so bad that I avoided driving for like 5 or 6 years. It was pretty bad... I HAD to get a car for work though and sort of forced myself into an informal kind of exposure therapy (don’t recommend doing this just saying I did, it was probably a very bad idea). What’s ironic now though is that it’s been a while since all of that, and honestly driving is one of my favorite things to do. I go on crazy-long road trips frequently, I would up driving for a living for a little while, and my car was a crazy good investment, because there were nights where I had nowhere but my car to sleep. Most people who know me will tell you that I’m one of the best drivers they know now lol

as someone who's life was drastically changed by a car accident, the message to be safe is SO important. i think a lot of people don't actually realize what a big responsibility it is to get behind the wheel. you're taking everyone else's life into your own hands! drive safe everyone :)
@catpoke9557
@catpoke9557 2 роки тому
And that thing about how big a responsibility it is, is why I wish my dad wouldn't be so insistent on me learning to drive. I KNOW I would not be able to fulfill that responsibility. Not because I'm a bad person. I literally just wouldn't realize I'm being irresponsible. I have ADHD lol. I can't even pay attention to a UKposts video that I chose to watch (I went to the comments before even watching,) or remember what tabs I have open. How am I going to keep track of where the cars are going, where I'm going, the speed limit, stop signs, turn signals, my mirrors, and even more. He was explaining it to me just earlier and even while listening I felt confused and overwhelmed, and as he was getting to the climax of the importance of paying attention, I YELLED DOG. Because I saw a random dog. In a random car. And had started ignoring him. On accident. Not to mention I have anxiety which would not be helping me every time I force myself to risk my life and everyone else's around me as I drive a giant, lethal vehicle. Choking and vomitting while on the road is not productive for attention span OR even being able to see. Yeah, dad, I'd totally be a great driver. Sure. Pft, I probably wouldn't even be able to focus on the lessons and I'd forget all the rules before even being able to worry about following them. I couldn't focus on school either.

@KatSpicert
@KatSpicert 2 роки тому
I know that feeling too, especially when anyone instructing you, whether it's especially my dad or a licensed instructor, will start being aggressive whenever I make any LITTLE mistake. Most notably, my dad agreed to let me drive for the first time with him. I'm making a turn coming out from a residential street to the main road, but I was a bit slow. He says go, but as I started to slowly increase speed at the turn he starts hurrying me like "go, GO GO!" And from that, I nearly crashed into a tree. The pure anxiety from that is scary. From there, I acted HELLA more confident on the road, like the really comfortable cocky type of confidence. I only act it because if I don't, I'm afraid I would involuntarily and constantly make mistakes, and the fear of the backlash I've gotten before will break me. My sister has it exceedingly worse in that she's unable to drive without extreme anxiety. Runs in the family, I guess. Still don't have licenses, me at 21, her at 28.

At 30 now I'm getting my licence at my own pace and it's going much more smoothly. Aiming to get my full license in the spring! 🤞 I appreciated Kurtis mentioning that driving anxiety is real and valid too~

I really appreciate the acknowledgment of anxiety around driving. I’m only 17 but living in the US the second you turn 16 there’s this immense pressure to get your license. Even when you’re 15 it’s “so do you have your permit yet”. I have an anxiety disorder and find it incredibly difficult to drive. I’ve tried to practice a few times (in an empty parking lot don’t worry lmao) but it always ends in a panic attack. I feel incredibly guilty and frustrated with constantly being asked when I’m getting my license and mocked that I don’t have it. Public transportation and infrastructure is shit in most the US so it can be challenging to get around on your own without a car (Uber exists but that’s a whole other anxiety inducer). People don’t ever seem to understand why I can’t get my license so I really appreciate the attitude towards driving with anxiety here.

Getting my license was an absolute nightmare, i struggle with anxiety and my instructor was a dick, he would yell at me when i made the slightest mistake and he didn't have any patience, at one point i got so frustrated that i started crying in the car. Idk how it works in the US but here you have to take a multiple choice test first and then you can start your driving lessons with a permit that also allows you to drive your own car with an adult as a supervisor. You have to have a sign on your car to show that you're a student driver and people in the street are somehow meaner when they see the sign?? Like give me a break dude im literally learning. @LuceOhsure
@LuceOhsure 2 роки тому
Yep, same here! I'm nearly 20, and in my country you're allowed driving lessons at 17, and to drive by yourself (with license of course) at 18. When I turned 18 everyone would ask me when I was getting my license, if I'd started driving lessons yet, etc etc, and I would always have to explain why not. I just didn't want that kind of stress in my life! Sure, going by car is easier than taking public transport, but I'd seen friends being pressured into driving lessons they didn't want and it was horrible. They had terrible anxiety and mean instructors. Worst of all? We all still lived at home, and usually their parents owned 2 cars, which both of them needed most days of the week to get to work. So my friends would go for an aimless drive during the weekends just to not lose their driving knowledge, but they barely ever actually got any use out of it. Now, I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with okay public transport. It's not ideal, and it takes longer than going by car, but mostly it's doable. I'll get my license when I feel like it, even if that means never!

It was also just the Canadian version of Worst Drivers. Pretty sure the original was from the U.K. and there have been several country adaptions since. It was just the longest running one and people largely attributed to the main host. As for the show, it's a mix of trying to help and bring awareness to the issue while also setting goals that most don't need to do often if ever so there can be tensions for people on the show that way.
@AL-bv7jt

The people showing up are there voluntarily and they don’t have the power to strip them of their licenses (as much as I wish they did). I think this show was great. It did seem to help quite a few of the people that were on it. Some people needed the help of the therapist and some just needed to learn driving skills. The woman that was the worst driver in the season featured here was later diagnosed with some major mental health issues that exacerbated her driving problems.

It actually gets so much more manageable when you get your license and just practice driving without anyone with you in the car. That being said, I have two close friends (we are in our 30s now) who don't have licenses, and 3 of my husband's siblings (all in their late 20s) don't have licenses either. It's nothing to be ashamed of, but it's also something that you can practice and get better at if it's important to you. You just need to really push yourself. I also have a personal conspiracy theory that no one passes their test on the first try so they have to come back and pay again to take the test again.
