So we’ve seen the intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton this year. Max parking his car on top of Lewis’ in Monza, Lewis being pushed onto the curbs in Imola and Max being fired off into the barrier at Silverstone.
But we’re engineering nerds here, so let's dive into the battle between Mercedes and Red Bull’s engineers this year - because they have been trading blows as well.
Both have found incredible breakthroughs in engine performance and aerodynamic advantages - so dive in and explain just how they have done it.
There is some juicy engineering to get into for this one…

This development race has come down to two main factors - engine power and downforce. We’re going to start with the engines.
Now in 2020, the engine was the main factor that gave the Mercedes the edge over the Red Bull Honda. They quite simply had more power, meaning they were much quicker at circuits like Monza and Spa.
However, Mecedes often weren’t the fastest in a straight line. As one of the main benefits of more power is that they can load the car with more downforce and not pay the price on the straights.
This, combined with the longer wheelbase design, meant that the Mercedes was faster in the medium and high-speed corners - but the agile chassis of the Red Bull meant that they were quicker in the slower corners.
Now, for 2021 - this seems to have flipped. Honda really have upped their game with an amazing push in engine development. And whilst a lot of this is kept secret, for obvious reasons, there is a decent amount we do know.
They have made massive performance gains that have meant that they were actually faster than the Mercedes on the long straights in Austria - something that was definitely not the case last year.
The first factor is that the engine is much smaller than last year and it looks to be the smallest engine on the grid, meaning that the rear-end of the car can be packaged much tighter.
This reduces drag and allows for better flow to the downforce generating components at the rear of the car. Something that really worked for Red Bull back in the Sebastian Vettel days - when Renault actually took a hit on power to create an engine that allowed for improved aerodynamic performance.
The smaller engine allows them to use a shorter wheelbase, whilst also keeping the centre of gravity slightly lower down, and concentrated in the middle of the car. It goes to show that even the engine on a Formula 1 car is designed to enhance the aerodynamic performance too.

To a relative neophyte like me, or to someone new to F1, this video is an excellent demonstration of the astounding technical complexity of F1 cars and the teams' remarkable ability to manufacture newly designed engines, engine parts, bodypanels etc. seemingly on the fly. It also illustrates the lengths teams go to gain a few tiny fractions of a second a lap, in a sport where a full second a lap and eternity are almost the same thing.

The engineering that goes into getting even the slightest advantage in F1 is really incredible. When you consider just how advanced all the teams are being at the end of a long era of regulations the margins for improvement have to be so slim but teams still find clever ways to get an advantage. After the Austria doubleheader it seemed like RedBull had the clear upper hand but Merc has been out developing them since, I am also impressed with how competitive Ferrari looks after their power upgrades too even though they are not in the title fight.

@@davidtube79 you’re right, though 10bar over such a large surface area is a big task to keep contained without rupture and keeping it all lightweight still. The surface area of the tubing and hoses of a pressure washer is tiny in comparison to a plenum. Domestic pressure washers are available up to 250-300bar. Commercial pressure washers go upwards of 2500bar for large industrial application, like removing linings of process equipment.

I don't think it is going with the fluid to the supercooled state. There is huge disadvantage of this solution that fluid can solidify just by acceleration or shake that f1 car produce on track. I would go with chemical additives to point where fluid stays fluid. Maybe my knowledge is to small in this area. Another question is if liquid is cooled under pressure is it supercooled? Whats the point of another pomp in the system that consumes energy?

It reduces drag and therefore downforce as well, but since they already produce so much downforce through their diffuser (one benefit of the high rake concept) they can use less wing and still have enough downforce through corners and maintain good top speed.
@illdeletethismusic
@illdeletethismusic 2 роки тому
this shape has been tried multiple times since the mid 2000s, and has been seen on Mercedes cars in the past few years occasionally as well the explanation of trying to reduce drag from the sides is correct. a substantial part of wing drag comes from turbulence caused by different pressure, as well as different flow direction air coming together. the top of a wing has high pressure, the bottom low, but in a well designed wing both are flowing the same direction, so while some turbulence is created, nothing as major as a constant vortex at a similar order of magnitude to the total air redirection forms. however at the end the upwards moving high pressure air can spill into a medium pressure horizontal flow right next to it, which in rain races you can see easily in the antler like looking flow coming from the endplates, and the medium pressure horizontal flow that gets displaced can easily spill back into the low pressure, also upward flow from under the wing, turning the whole thing into a massive vortex. the closer you can make the differences in flow direction and pressures to the air right next to it, the smaller your energy loss to that vortex gets. this makes the curved bottom wing more efficient, while giving up some area and total downforce

Its really because of how the media and all portrays the WDC that the WDC looks more important, but the WCC is where the prize money is. Hungary GP was a pretty good point in illustrating that, the teams that aren't fighting for WDC are purely fighting for WCC, Alpine's Alonso defending against Hamilton, Williams' Russell told his team to prioritize his teammate who was ahead, all of that was because they are fighting for WCC.

For anyone interested, you can experience a super cooled liquid at home. Take bottled water and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Take it out before it starts freezing. Hit the bottle and the water will instantly crystallise in the bottle. I've found that sparklink water works bets as you can pour it into a glass ten drop an ice cube in to watch it turn into slush. The fact that Mercedes can cool the coolant enough to achieve this is a feat. Especially that close to a very hot engine.

I think the one, who can push itself as a team and their car to 100% each race weekend, will win the championship. It might be decided by little errors as Hamilton and Mercedes did in Turkey (good idea to take only the 10 place grid penalty but then not to box in the right window, which was a delicate decision).

8:00 I'm not sure what type of coolant Mercedes is using, but I find it hard to believe they are using coolant that is being cooled to below it's freezing point. Water freezes at 0 C/32 F, so unless their car has some sort of refrigerator on board, there's no way they're supercooling coolant using just ambient airflow (and F1 races don't usually occur when it's below freezing outside). If I had to guess, "supercooled" in this context does not mean the coolant is being cooled below its freezing point, but rather it means that the coolant is being cooled below its boiling point. When referring to systems that use a combination of vapor and liquid (more believable in this context), supercooled means the vapor-liquid mixture is being cooled below the temperature that all of the vapor condenses into liquid. That being said, I am making the assumption that their coolant is primarily water. This makes sense as most cars use water-based coolant, and water has an extremely high specific heat capacity, so it transfers heat very effectively for it's weight. But if they're using some exotic chemical for their coolant, my argument is null.

@@alesksander yes FIA monitor intake temperature, it can only be from memory 10c lower than ambient temperature, that’s why Redbull questioned where the temperature sensor has to be fitted because it’s thought Mercedes are running coolant through the intake manifold AFTER the sensor reducing intake temps.
@alesksander
@alesksander 2 роки тому
@@dandewar8403 Yeah maybe. But FIA tech officers are not dumb or are they? If there is something on this i imagine this is almost carbon copy situation of Ferrari. Maybe they really use "cavity" inside carbon plenum to provide that advantage. Technically is possible yes. But huge red flag against that is how Mercedes out willingly spoken about revolutionary" plenum design before and even during this season. Normally Merc operates under smoke and mirrors tactics. Whole 2013 season was meme, 2014-2016 hiding aero dominance, 2017 diva car with Pirelli understandings - those pesky wheel rims and lobby for oil burning etc. I guess there advantage is on other place or there are none. Maybe they just perfected combustion of this hybrid are to perfection. Nowadays they just squeezing as much performance they can .So they got perf issues. naturally. And luckily for them in next seasons you can resolve any anomaly's even under freezing rules. So is worth it to push harder and fix thingies later. Overall design seems just solid for them. Same for Honda witch impressive resurgence and catch up gets them high praise and any magic bullets are very unlikely at this stage.

The thing that always surprises me is that we constantly hear about designers going to absolute extremes to keep the centre of gravity low in order to maximise mechanical grip, which is particularly important in the low speed corners, because there's minimal downforce at low speed. And since the Red Bull seems to be quick in low speed corners, you would imagine it has a particularly low centre of gravity. But given that the high rake design lifts the whole engine, gearbox, fuel tank, rear suspension etc several inches higher than a low rake car, the Red Bull centre of gravity must be massively higher than the Mercedes in low speed corners. It just doesn't make any sense.

can't wait to the see the new cars, as all the drivers are great but the result seems to come down to who has the fastest car instead of driving skill. I do like the fact the cars are different but when one or two teams are so far ahead it's unfair. Hamilton is a great driver in the fastest car so doesn't normally have competition he gets way out in front, next year we will see if he can actually battle and drive well with other probably equally skilled drivers keeping the pressure on assuming he is even at the or near the front of the pack might not be the case next year, although I'm sure Mercedes will bend as many rules as possible to make sure they have the best car again.

I'm with you, I was trying to figure this out as well. In theory if you could bleed some compressed air off the inlet (after the intercooler) then expand that back to ambient pressure you might be able to get below ambient temp. Maybe run that air through a cooler to cool your working fluid? Not even sure it's possible once you account for efficiencies and relatively small heat capacity of the bleed air compared to the plenum air. I don't think they'd be using a refrigerant cycle (doubt the rules would even allow that) due to weight and the power loss to run the compressor.

@thecraggrat
@thecraggrat 2 роки тому
I'm surprised that this isn't used by all of the engine manufacturers already, it isn't exactly a new technology or even a new concept. Engine designers have always tuned the length of the inlet trumpet for rev range optimal power or torque; variable length trumpets have already been run before, the Mazda 787B ran variable length intake at Le Mans in 91, when they won, I'd have thought this was not the first time it was used, but if it was, then a 30 year old concept! The only problem is packaging for formula 1, they have so little space, the design looks very nice to fit!
