PIR or Passive Infrared sensors can detect movement by comparing variations in heat radiation of objects in their field of view. In this episode of The Learning Circuit, you can learn more about the different types, how they use lenses to increase their range, and interesting technical details about PIR sensors. Hit play to watch another great lesson from Maker Karen and be sure to check out the follow-up video where Karen shows how to use a PIR sensor in a circuit by making a motion activated snow globe: bit.ly/36njZAP

Ms. What a wonderful "theatrical" presentation - your set is appropriate to your subject, your presentation skills, diction, eyes to the camera, voice quality - all excellent. Not to mention the information presented - clear, informative, good tips. I'm a new subscriber!

My advice if you are planning to take EE or EET.. focus more on actual circuits and not so much into coding.. arduino is an amazing tool but it's kinda cheating a tad bit lol

Same thing. I’m designing a fully automated garden running the PLC on a micrologix. I want to see if I can add an IR sensor to detect hail with a discrete output to control a motor connected to a sun shade or awing to cover the garden in a hail event.

Question. Is it possible to use a PIR in a vehicle for detection of say, the bone density of passenger? The information would be used on airbag deployment. TIA.

Thank you a lot for this video. I was wondering about the response times of this kind of sensors to detect movement and motionless; what are the orders of these response times? Are they same order? Do they depend on the 2 or 4 configurations (number of pyroelectric elements)? Thanks again!
@maker_karen1785
@maker_karen1785 3 роки тому
It kinda depends on which sensor you're using. You should be able to find that information in the data sheet for each sensor. I've seen some that are very laggy and take a while to sense motion while others seem almost trigger happy and respond seemingly instantaneously.

@pikakun6624

Yup! I’m pretty sure it says “if it’s colder or warmer” than room temperature, it’ll make a voltage.

@@pikakun6624 I have found out goes by body heat? if you wave a stick in over the pir sensor it will not go off. depends on what you need them for? I've made a few that go off with out the need for body heat. you can find them on my channel for ghost hunting

We have occupancy sensors on our bathroom switches (installed with newly built home...) they use a PIR sensors to detect non-occupancy and turn the switch off after a time of no change in the sensor. The fun part about PIR near infrared is that it cant see through glass, so when in the shower it doesn't see the movement, just a uniform warmth. It was fun the first time we figured that one out....at 9PM.....while rinsing out shampoo..... So we have them set to maximum timeout (45min) effectively negating the benefit of the occupancy feature. Luckily we dont forget to hit the switch on the way out (out of compulsion), on the plus side the easy tap push button action makes doing so as simple as bumping the wall!
