Hi. In today's episode of Some More News, we explore the very unsurprising response of the grotesquely rich to the Coronavirus crisis that threatens their ability to be insulated from the poor and working-class that they exploit and take for granted.

Americans in 1997: “oh wow, this Tiantic movie is crazy. Can you believe the rich people took the life boats, and even told the poor people in steerage there wasn’t any danger so they could escape faster? I’d never allow that, so unfair it makes me furious.” Americans in 2020: *reads headlines full of rich people getting virus tests, fleeing to private cabins in private jets, and telling us this is a hoax* “Ahh, now I get it.”

Ajax Aidy wow, “hateful and morally devoid trash” is one hell of an insult, especially for someone who wasn’t even incorrect. although you are right that statistically more women and children survived due to the complex of chivalry- over 60% of the first class was able to access lifeboats compared to a startling 25% of the third. class divide has always dictated the ease of survival especially when it means the access to life saving measures like lifeboats, respirators, and vaccines.

The same happened with the Chernobyl disaster. The Soviet elites were saying that everything was fine while making sure they and their families left the area. This amorality is what powerful and wealthy people owe their wealth and power to. Nietzsche even went as far as to say that morality itself was a property of slaves, not of masters.
@keemstarkreamstar7069

quill prickle I’m pretty sure the reason why the first class were able to get to the life boats easier wasn’t because they hated the poor, but because first class quarters were closest to the deck.
@lexchangedtheirlastname
@lexchangedtheirlastname 4 роки тому
Keemstar Kreamstar the first class was given luxury accommodations on the titanic, that’s why they were put in the most comfortable cabins- the ones closest to the deck. when the tragedy occurred, their safety, just like their comfort, was catered to. the first class passengers survived at higher rates than the third class because their lives were seen as more valuable. it doesn’t come from malice or hatred for the working class, it comes from the belief that wealth gives one superiority and value in a society. it’s kind of like what cody talks about with the article “the survival of the richest,” the elite see themselves as slave masters to the poor. they feel a need to assure and protect their dominance over an “inferior” proletariat class if “the event” does occur. for the “superior” elite on the titanic, “the event” was its sinking, and the rich‘s safety was heavily prioritized compared to the 75% of the third class who did not survive.

Ajax Aidy What the bloody hell are you talking about?
@takeshikovax6254
@takeshikovax6254 4 роки тому
Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but most hospitals are non-profit. I've read that most of hospital costs are administration costs (doing all the paper work required to correctly bill the hundreds of different insurance plans). Also, most people who get hospital treatment don't pay their bills (because they can't), so that cost is payed by the people who can. And, healthcare organizations are sued very often, which probably significantly adds to costs as well.
@sazji
@sazji 4 роки тому
Your Mom Yes I did overgeneralize. About 18% of our hospitals are for-profit: thanks for pointing that out. The main reason for the enormous administrative costs is the enormous staff required to deal with the very complex billing issues brought by the Byzantine system of private (and definitely for-profit) insurance companies, and the many different ways Americans get (or don’t get) insured. The recent decision by Trump not to open the ACA marketplace to people who lost their insurance because they were insured through work, adds a new layer. Those bills will get paid one way or another. This is the part that gets me when people say, “I’m not paying for someone else’s healthcare.” They already literally are; not only because that is exactly how insurance companies work (plus paying for hefty company profits) but also we pay the taxes that make sure the necessary people and companies do get paid. And then there are the drug companies, but I hardly need to go into that, other than to say that a government is in much a better position to negotiate prices with them.
@sazji
@sazji 4 роки тому
Ajax Aidy Not at all. We’re paying much more than we need to. Our private insurance system is so complex that hospitals have to maintain enormous administrative staff to deal with it. All those people who need to be paid. And while there was once a law that medical services could not be for-profit, as a basic human need, now the insurers especially are totally profit oriented. That means they can sell policies that don’t really cover you. You do your best to find a balance between what you need and what you can afford, but the wrong choice and sudden diagnosis or accident can mean you are still financially destroyed. In developed countries with single payer health care do not have this issue. A Canadian, Brit, German, Norwegian, Australian etc. during a medical emergency does not have to worry about which hospital to call because they don’t know if they’ll accept their insurance. They don’t worry about the ambulance costs being as high as their treatment. They also don’t put off treatment that they need, because they don’t know how they’ll afford it. Here, people do, and that often leads to them not getting help until they have no other choice, or have to go to the emergency room. That’s expensive, and we all pay when they can’t. Because as you say, people need to be paid for their work. So yes we pay, but much of that money is spent inefficiently, and millions still cannot afford the care they need. Why is that preferable to spending the money wisely and covering everyone?

This happened way back in January too. So the trump administration has no excuse for not knowing all about this long ago. It's also interesting to note that China (supposedly, but today I question whether they don't care about people more than our government does) has the "worst" record for human rights. What I was saying is that a lot of ultra wealthy people are squeezing water from a stone, and we are the stone. The top 1% already have 80% of the wealth of the country. If the wealth was distributed more fairly then more people would be much more able to spend money buying things they need, and that money would go back into the companies owned by the wealthy. In an MBA class on negotiations one of my professors talked about creating vs claiming value. When two people negotiate, they can work together to create more value together, and some of that will be claimed by each side. He said that a lot of people think of themselves as "cutthroat" so they blind themselves to any strategy that doesn't involve claiming as much of the value as possible, even if they could get more value by working with the other person then by "dominating" them. At this point, being against universal healthcare is just immoral. I really don't care anymore. All of the counterarguments I see to it can be boiled down to "I don't want to have to pay more in taxes". People are dying, and your main concern is having to pay a bit more in taxes (which may actually be cheaper for you than paying for insurance and healthcare right now)?
@robdeskrd
@robdeskrd 4 роки тому
The best part is no one would have to pay more taxes if we stop spending the taxes on stupid shit but people who would benefit from this system being in place have been led to believe it's a bad idea by people who don't want to lose the power of fear. If we pay off student loans and make school free, and supply universal health care and also why not make all banking utilities public non profit companies how will the powers maintain control? The point these people don't want to live in a world where they can't totally control everyone, if everyone can have nice things and they can't dominate the world through, these would rather see the world not exist....... Having all the stuff isn't enough they also require that the people of the world are beholden to their every whim and completely miserable and they need that just to be able get out of bed each day. Denying 17 year old kids treatment for a lack of insurance gets these guys rock hard and ready to loot & pillage with zeal again, that is the smell of napalm they love in the morning and when no one is looking they will get together to go dance on that kids grave. If we do not forcibly remove these people from power all we have to look forward to is the event. If we remove them from then we build a better world but only if we remove them.

That is what is kinda odd. He was calling for Single Payer but only for THIS particular incident, ie COVID. His comment Single Payer not fixing hospital shortages is actually true but that is sidestepping that Single Payer fixes people dying due to no insurance. He is ignoring what a Single Payer would do and his dig on Italy is what? Over hospital shortages? Which again has nothing to do with Single Payer. Single Payer is insurance. He is talking about operations of the physical health facility. Ok Joe so we send money to these hospitals to cover those shortages. How does that prevent the death of someone due to no insurance? I think the large problem may be how M4A is sold because one camp believes it is just Medicare which does not cover doctor visits so therefor you need supplemental insurance to pay for that and the other camp who thinks it means the VA expanded to everywhere, a complete govt take over of all facilities. No, it is universal coverage for insurance that covers both hospital stays and doctor visits plus medicine. It is not all hospital and clinics become govt employees like the VA or the NHS, what the brits have. It just means there is no Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield, etc. You go see your doctor and hand him your medical card. They have the information and bill M4A.

So, in Dungeons and Dragons the rich hoarders are typically the BBEG (Dragons, Vampires, Demons, Devils, etc) and it is up to us adventurers to storm the dungeons (mansions, boats, etc) slay the Dragons and loot the hoard. We are setting up a game, weekly, it takes place in the warehouse, beneath the bridge. I must state that this is a work of fiction and satire, there is no game... And the password is definitely not "Sig Semper Tyrannis" Because it is illegal to say you want to slay the rich with a group of friends with swords. @@yourneighbor6152 yes and no, while they can stockpile and save, not all of them will. any economic disruption will hurt their stock portfolios and weaken their bond holdings. this is where much of their wealth is stored, so if a general strike were to happen billions of their dollars would simply evaporate and much less would be coming in. even with scab workers they would still suffer from massive brain drain and if the strikers are actively blockading streets and vandalizing elite property that just compounds the stock impact and reduces their cash flows. it isn't about outlasting them to nothing, it is about weakening them enough that they will be less and less able to use their influence since they would literally get poorer by the second. it is a war of attrition and morale, not stockpiles.

Even though we have the means to provide healthcare, food, water, and housing to everyone in the country, we should not do that because it is better for capitalists to not make a profit by wasting their resources than it is for them to not make a profit by giving those resources away to those who need them. michaelrz167 That’s actually just about the only thing Ajax has said that was even close to true. Communism is a materialistic ideology. Specifically it is an ideology concerned with the material world and meeting the material needs of society as a whole. Ajax is a self centered loser however and is utterly unconcerned with the welfare of others. He’s also a textbook example of the “Just World Phenomenon” which is the tendency for humans to assume that one’s material conditions are a natural result of their good or bad deeds. If a person is poor or doesn’t have health care it’s because they’re lazy, stupid, or other wise bad. In other words he genuinely believes that if a person is rich it is because they deserve to be rich and if a person is poor it is because they deserve to be poor. And you’ll never be able to convince him that this belief is wrong because he believes it not because of any evidence or logical reason. He believes this because he *HAS* to believe it. Because it’s the only way for him to maintain the delusion that liberal democracy is a meritocracy and is thus just.

@Ajax Aidy Hi -- I'm not A), but I am B) and C). I've also done enough physical labor -- running a zinc printing press for Braille among other jobs -- that I don't count for your final point which you forgot to mark D). I am not asking anyone else to pay for my healthcare. When I lived in Belgium -- they needed an American who knew the US university system at a Dutch language university -- I was paid as a Belgian. That meant I paid Belgian taxes (if I'd earned about five times more I would have also paid US taxes, but there are some benefits to being less than rich). I paid nigh on 33% of my salary in taxes. I also, as a tax payer, got most of the same benefits (I had no representation in national or even local government. As a citizen of DC, I have some say in local government -- which can be over-ridden by Congress -- and no representation in national government in spite of the District paying more, collectively, in national income tax than Vermont, Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakota of your choice combined.). The most important of those benefits became clear when I had to have an emergency appendectomy. After the surgery, I stayed in the hospital for a week because I was running a fever. I had one choice in my meals, brown bread or white with the standard fare, there was no television in my room, and the room was shared with one other post surgical patient. In one way the cost to me was 0 Belgian Francs; in another way, that "free" appendectomy and hospital stay was something I'd already paid for with my taxes. No one else needs to pay for my medical care or cover my old age. If we all pay the same percentage of tax with no loopholes, we wouldn't even need to approach 33% tax on the poorest incomes. Even US citizens are willing to pay higher taxes if they can see what they're getting for it -- no extra debt with a medical emergency, public child care which allow parents to return to work, longer sick leave periods (I was covered for a full month.), four weeks of paid vacation every year (It was only three weeks the first year, four weeks the second through -- I think -- the twelfth year, five weeks through the twentieth year in full-time work, and six weeks a year after that.), you know, the stuff that allows good mental and physical health for most people.

When the world is void of human life except for the 20 wealthiest men, they'll realize that it wasn't money that made them happy, but the ability to oppress others with it. Others who are now all dead. The 20 men will stare at each other in their bunker, sadly contemplating their new circumstances. Slowly, they realize that one of them has a mole on his shoulder; another has hair that isn't quite silky, and another with hair that's a bit too silky. 19 men beat the shit out of the mole man. 18 beat up the too-silky man. 17 take turns on the not-silky-enough man. The world is too small for their hatred, but they've never known anything else. A lone man sits surrounded by 19 bodies, facing the existential horror of having no one left to hate. He begins to overflow with hatred, but lacking anyone else, starts to hate himself. He realizes that-nay, he's *always* hated himself. He hates himself so much that he systematically killed 7.5 billion people to avoid thinking about how much he hates himself. And now here he is, the last human alive, drowning in despair at the knowledge that no one had ever loved him. He cries until he has nothing left to cry, then slowly dies of dehydration.
