Despite the movie being really fun, i have 2 major problems with it; 1 - the pacing is weird, everything happens too fast, because they had to make room for the musical, you don't see Cady slowly becoming a mean girl, she goes from "shy Innocent girl" to a plastic from one scene to another 2 - they watered down how mean regina actually is, like, she barely does anything mean (except talking down to her friends) she's more like an arrogant girl in this movie

Mean Girls was originally a book titled Queen Bees and Wannabes. Tina Fay purchased the rights to produce the original movie, then spun it into all the extras.

I think a lot of the trouble comes with the pacing, which the musical does better. They cut the song introducing the plastics, the song that shows how Regina's mom and Gretchen both feel like there's something wrong with them around Regina, the song where Gretchen and Karen get out from under Regina and find their own confidence, the short song where Cady finally takes ownership for the book, and the song around the mathletes. I understand why they cut song of these as far as song quality, but these moments are very important for the characters and their growth during the story that were included in the musical and really enhanced the story. Regina at the end is supposed to have another moment where she talks about her introspection and how she realized the harm she was doing to others and needed to change so that's why she was being nice which they cut unfortunately. There's just a lot of periods of time that were passed through during songs in the musical which just go too quick because they deleted the songs and didn't fill the empty space with anything. I wish they had just changed some songs like they did with the second song to something better rather than deleting them altogether. Also, one moment which Karen gets in the musical which I love is when she texts Cady while she's suspended and basically has this moment of 'I’m actually really smart with emotions, I'm just not that booksmart' which shows how she has her own abilities that often go unnoticed, I wish they kept that in so she had a bigger role.

Cady and Regina’s interaction in the bathroom towards the end was an actually a deleted scene in the 2004 movie but in the stage musical and the 2024 movie they added it in.

OH MY GOD I did not even REALIZE that Busy Philips was the mom on the trailers, I thought they just gave Renee Rapp really weird acting directions and outfit. Legit got the two completely confused. Amazing casting in that regard.

As a theatre kid who LOVED a lot of the music from mean girls, the music in the movie is really underwhelming. Sexy was indeed i the Broadway musical, it still holds up as one of the best songs from the stage adaptation.

Thank you for being the only reviewer to acknowledge how RUSHED this felt, with a 20 minute longer runtime than the original somehow. The songs don’t flow naturally with the story; it’s like the story pauses for the music then resumes, so we get this Sparknotes version of the 2004 film in-between songs.

The new movie had to be rushed. The stage show is almost three hours long. To adapt it to screen, which means having music and choreography plus a decent amount of dialogue means they had to shorten some things. They cut scenes and they cut a bunch of songs from the stage show too. I thought they did a great job with what they had.

With the scene with Regina and Cady, they mention that Regina knows she has to change and work on herself. So they aren't friends, but they're not enemies anymore

2 things I’d like to mention. 1. Is that Sexy is in the Broadway musical. In fact there’s a pretty good video of it professionally recorded on UKposts. And the second thing is that the scene in the bathroom at the Spring Fling with Cady and Regina wasn’t in the musical, but actually a deleted scene from the original movie. Which I think while it is nice that they added it in and gave the scene its time to shine, but I do agree that it didn’t add much to the plot

I dont think it's possible for it to be "better" than the original because it couldn't exist without it but I honestly thought the musical version was much more entertaining, i like musicals generally, the directing and art direction is much more dynamic and as a zoomer I found the updated jokes funnier (the icarly joke killed me haha) .

I really enjoyed the new movie, Renée was amazing as Regina! My only complaint is that my fav character, Gretchen, got so many iconic lines cut.

Regina didn't feel as mean in this movie, just bratty and arrogant. They really toned down the meanness and little quips about people, I'm assuming they didn't want to be overly mean but she's a villain, she's not supposed to always say or do the right thing. I've noticed writers forgetting that lately. The movie was paced so weirdly, it rushed through a lot of important details and didn't build up enough. It's almost like they said "you already know this stuff so we don't need to go in depth" but it made the movie feel weird.

As someone who's seen the original, Broadway show, and now this movie, it's definitely my least favorite of the 3 but still not bad. I just think they were way too safe when it came to the music, since they cut so many songs along with just shortening songs for no reason, trying to please a "non-musical" audience even though it's still a musical (they barely even marketed it as such). And that just made it so no side was happy in the end, since I definitely think it would've been better had it used more songs from the Broadway show while keeping their full length (it would also have helped with the pacing). Oh and why does Cady still have a flip phone by the end when they're all using TikTok and Instagram 😭I love the idea of modernizing Mean Girls through technology and social media, it makes sense, but like why give them flip phones.

i didn’t go into this thinking it was a remake, because i didn’t think it was. it was always just the musical version to me and i’d been looking forward to it since they said they were making it. i would have loved a proshot of the musical most of all, what they did with hamilton and waitress and heathers, but this was still good. i think they could have marketed it as a musical better. renee rapp’s voice is crazy, though, so i knew she was going to hit it out of the park.

I don’t think it’s better but it was so fun and silly and so unserious !! I think the cast did a great job my favorite song is world burn and sexy

Honestly Mean Girls 2024 has been my favorite movie in a long time… me and my friends had such a great time watching it in theaters!

to me, i was able to connect better to the friendship between damian and janis with cady. in the original i felt like there wasn’t as much connection to that side of the plot. and auli’i is one of my biggest celebrity crushes and I adored her as janis.

Sexy is in the musical! Granted, some the riffs and instrumental were very different, but the lyrics are mostly the same aside from the "sexy Rosa Parks" line getting cut from the movie (for obvious reasons 💀)

It was weirdly rushed. There were some cool bits, but it doesn’t stand up against the original. I was happy to see Ms. Norbary and Principal Duvall together. They should have done the boys perspective, or another girls perspective, or done about their grown children.. really remake it into anything other than a Walmart quality musical🫣

the thing is you really can't beat the 2004 movie. they didn't know the cult classic they were making back then. the issue is them trying to RECREATE a cult classic but redo it. the original has held up time very well. but the new one is soo set on trends. when trends go out of style the media will also not well. they should've just made a musical not a semi musical-film based on a musical and a movie. the costumes vere too low budget. why raceswap the characters? just replace them instead with new ones. the cast choice was odd, so were the song removals and adding. tina fey is trying to ride her mean girls train that has no passengers in, on its way to a lake. janice was not in lgbt community, she was leBANESE, not leSBIAN. did tina fey forget a joke she might've been making both times. the girl acting cady has no presence. she is so outdated vanilla compared to broadway or even lindsay lohan. don't really feel like i would wanna be like cady (a new plastic in the school) like i and many others did with lohan. also last time i saw the principal was in mean girls 2 when he said he would like to basically beat students. this movie is actually just Unpolite Highschoolers not Mean Girls. was keeping my mind open but after seeing it it closed. In interviews some of the cast and some of the interviewers are making it clear that this is not a remake. It’s an adaptation. No one is trying to replace or redo the original. The directors wanted to surprise people and make some things different.
