The psalms are often thought of as purely devotional. They of course have that value, but they also contain significant theological statements, especially to ancient Israelites whose ears were tuned to specific points of their content. We often miss such things since we are not part of the ancient Israelite world, particularly in terms of the religious struggle with Canaanite religion and Baalism. In this episode we look at Psalms 24 and 29 for how religious texts from Ugarit help inform our reading. These two psalms contain several specific polemical points directed against Baal that modern readers would miss.

This was so good. I'm glad I stumbled upon it. Nope, it does not shake my faith. It makes it stronger and put things into deeper context. Great work guys.

It's amazing to me that doctor Heiser claims it's possible no Israelite knew the Genesis 3 story, yet somehow all the Israelites that recorded scripture somehow knew the baal story....? This is absolute foolishness to claim that every time the Old Testament uses language or vocabulary words that happens to match other texts, it means that it's responding to it or copying from it

I see a lot of negative comments, and I haven't watch the video yet, so I don't know if they are warranted or not but.... I have seen a LOT of Dr Heiser's videos and I agree with (as a rough estimate) 90% of what he says... this video may be in that 10% column but that doesn't invalidate the other 90%. Dr. Heiser is not God, and he knows it. What he is doing is giving his learned opinion. No ones is perfect, no one knows the mind of God, or for that matter any other person BUT Dr. Heiser has studied ancient languages and ancient people for a LONG time and if anyone is qualified to speak on the mind of a particular group of ancient people it would be him. Again, I DO NOT agree with Him 100% of the time and have not watched the video yet. In fact, I am going to mark it and watch at a latter date to hear it with a fresh mind, May God bless us all and grant us wisdom

I would not understand My Bible the way I do today and wouldn't be as hungry for Our Fathers loving instructions if it were not for me being led to Dr. Heiser! He has always been humble and I honestly needed his type of academic knowledge to answer questions that drew me closer to Jesus. I am grateful and give thanx to YHWH as well as Dr. Heiser!

Correlation does not imply causation; simply because two events happen close together in space and time, does not mean that one causes the other. Just because David wrote a song about a thunderstorm, in no way necessarily implies that he borrowed, depended upon or even had in mind the Baal cycle. Every ancient poet, witnessing a thunderstorm, is going to ascribe it to their respective deity, and are going to use similar imagery. This is the problem with literary criticism as a tool for interpretation; it is dependent upon the Critic to be a mind reader, peering into a mind, separated by three thousand years of history, culture and language. How convenient that the actual author is no longer around to dispute the interpretation... ;-)

Be ye perfect for your Father in heaven is perfect...guess Paul & Michael know better than the Messiah Himself 🤔🤔🤔

Define "perfect". Most of us raised in the evangelical church communities will never feel good enough. This in itself is not mentally healthy.

@@judieewing1403 it is a goal...none of us are worthy hence our Messiah 🙏🏻🔥🙏🏾 but there are simple things that can be done daily then you simply add on as Paul was preaching to. Do this first etc etc then hit the Torah & grow from there hence your narrow path quest to perfection with Abba...The Word (Messiah)...The Holy Spirit And yes we will stumble we will fail we will make errors we will sin but it is what we do after each of these things that makes us considered by He who will judge all that ever were...shalom
