"Now that we've done it, well... we've done it!" Not quite the ringing endorsement you'd want, but I'm thinking we'll have to wait for the next generation of low power chips before there's any significant advancement, in either better efficiency, better performance, or (hopefully) both.

I love the idea of these boxes, but I will go for a mini-itx system with an Intel 4x NIC card and a Ryzen or Core i3 for my virtualized firewall and basic server. It's nice to have the extra configurability / upgradability / manageability (vPro etc), and the extra CPU grunt when needed (eg heavy firewalling or otf stream transcoding).

My J6413 arrived back in late Nov. Installed Proxmox 7.3-3 just fine. Passed thru 5 of the 6 NICs (LAN, 2-LAGG/LACP, WAN1, WAN2) without trouble although I did have to use pfsense version 2.7 as 2.6 did not have the NIC drivers. I have a 2.5" SSD mounted on the back and the unit is stuffed in a small leviton "closet" which has no airflow. Been running great so far.

What I'd like to see is a standardized form factor for STX motherboards (sounds like STH). Odroid H3, this, ASRock STX300 not available in retail and some others all are nice options but often are lacking due to their proprietary implementations or lack of accessories like cases etc.

I’ve got both the N5105 and this newer J6413 units. I had the exact opposite experience with pass through! Although both of them worked, the N5105 opnsense vm kept throwing kernel panics after 18-20hs of operation. Tried KVM on Proxmox and Ubuntu. This new one is much more stable. IOMMU groups are far better as well. I feel that m.2 slot aside, it is a far more stable virtual host than the N5105. Oh, and my power button is not upside down 🙃! OH, and the power dip switch is a hardware always on feature (restore power on ac loss)

Great video, good to know that the 5105 still hasn't been dethroned :) I know this is off topic but I would love to see some content on helping build a home server. Looking for a good compromise between performance and idle running costs. Completely confused about what kind of processor to get whether to get a new Core i9, Ryzen or a used Xeon, Epyc processor. I also don't understand server motherboards very well. What features should I be looking for? IPCM? Do I need ECC memory? Do I need a special PSU compared to a standard desktop computer? Are prebuilt from Dell, Lenovo good value? So many questions and I'm just completely confused. For context I'm a software developer and I already run multiple promox servers from old desktop computers but would love to step up to something more powerful and dedicated to the task would like to upgrade above 64GB ram.

I got this unit with the J6412 CPU a month ago... But "shipping got mixed up" and it arrived with only 4GB/64GB, instead of the purchased 8GB/128GB. The error was acknowledged and fixed to my benefit by providing me with an additional 16GB RAM module via second delivery. I guess the usage of the mSATA is a result of the NICs using up the SOCs bifurcated PCIe lanes. In my personal “lab” use case this unit is actually replacing an opnsense VM running on PVE so I did not test the PCIe passthrough. The Bios offers a lot of “OEM” settings - but as with other expensive toys - it arrived without any documentation. Another question would be where to get UEFI updates? Also: I was unable to boot from the 2nd SATA port when the mSATA card was removed. But “chainloading hdb” worked. Might be relevant if used with only one SATA drive. PS: 2G5 ethernet is a bad compromise with driver issues on every OS, bad chips, power waste, expensive non-managed switches and many slow NICs. But after decades of 1GB@home max I’m glad we didn’t get a 2G5(+) VS 2g5(-) format war or new rounded connectors ;D

I already bought two of these and I agree with your findings. I thought they had NVMe when I ordered them but I still think they're pretty great for what they are though. As you mention there's no noticeable performance difference between J6413 and N5105 (except in graphics performance where N5105 has 24 execution units and J6413 only has 16 in comparison but that makes no difference in networking applications). However, I have heard some people say that J6413 run more stably than N5105. Possibly power consumption is also a tiny bit lower (but that could also be due to a better power supply as you mention).

I’m running OPNSense on it now as pfsense doesn’t support the i226-v chip yet and there was no way to get it to work after extensive digging on Google and through forums. Bought same model with J6413. Have several issues. 1. Both of my 2 half-size wifi card are not working (no devices found on both tested ubuntu22.04 and opnSense). Was trying to make router, but without working wifi - failed. USB one is not so stable. 2. (Just was curious) Cannot install windows as there is no drivers. Mini PC came without any paper documentation. Also didn't find any usefully in net. ( 3. It is hot enough even without any serious load. (Disappointed in this model).

#1 We did not test. #2 Interesting, this uses pretty standard Intel IP and the newest Intel NIC driver pack has the i226. You are 100% right on documentation being challenging. #3 We had like 38C as our SoC idle temps on the units we had for this one. These stayed cool, but the chassis do get warm since they are passively cooled.

I kinda don't understand going through the hassle of Proxmox on these low-power CPUs. Plus, running Proxmox, you're forced to tie up one of your NICs for the Proxmox interface. So that leaves you with a 5-port router instead of a 6-port. I've had a great experience just installing OpenWRT on my unit. It was just set and forget, and I'm enjoying no longer being bottlenecked by 1Gig ports on my 1400Mbps internet plan.

Why do you continue to FAIL to not benchmark these units for their use as a switch as well.. since it certainly can be a big factor for anyone doing LAN xfers and wanting to use that 2.5 nic to its full advantage.. but are not wanting to buy a separate dedicated switch (yet) Also note.. the 6412/13 supports Hardware AV1 decoding which the older designs lack.. it also supports faster ram than the 5105 does which could make for a potential impact of note.. depending on use case of course..

Why not just set yours up as a switch and test it. Then restore the config and profit?
@kindanyume
@kindanyume Рік тому
@@DaleEarnhardtsSeatbelt kinda impossible to do that if you dont have one of those in hand to do such a test with eh? However they obviously do have such in hand and it really should be a part of the basic tests on boxes like this since many will want to use such as a replacement/alternative to a consumer router.. just add a dedicated wifi ap for best placement. Also many users that would be in this class of hw would have a few systems using 2.5gb but not necessarily enough to justify a standalone 2.5 class switch Example case in a friends place which I wired ages ago so it can easily handle 2.5gb on copper (it's good enough for 10gb but as we all know that sadly costs far more still) 6 port like this could easily be 1 WAN, 1 wifi AP, 1 downlink to 1GB switch, 1 to NAS and 2 left to newer PCs But if it cant handle full 2.5GB on all the ports at once then that will limit its ability as a switch for obvious reasons. The other thing I found sadly missing from these lil boxes is any SFP+ capability but yeah I know most cases for that will be dedicated switch and much highernspeeds
@DaleEarnhardtsSeatbelt
@DaleEarnhardtsSeatbelt Рік тому
@@kindanyume I have one. With open sense and pfsense the nics aren't switched. Most consumer routers are switches and routers in one box. These appliances are not that. You have to designate a wan port and bridge the remaining ports. It warns you performance will take a hit when bridging vs using an actual switch after the unit. Mine is the 4 port. I have one as a wan port and 3 lan ports are bridged to act as a switch. Otherwise they do nothing. I can get about 2.3 gigabits to my Linux server in iperf. Haven't tested all ports on the bridge at once though. I do have wifi 6 aps hooked up to it though. I have my PC, server/Nas, and 1gb poe switch for the aps connected to the router via the bridge lan ports. The 1gb switch does hold back the APs a little bit but I don't care. My internet is only gigabit fiber anyways very rarely does my wireless network use even 500mb of bandwidth.

Personally, i still wouldn't use this for commercial application. I find that it lacks there of, Should consider using QSFP or SFP ports instead of regular ethernet ports even though they are 2.5g ethernet. Most business in central US still us 1G Ethernet but have QSFP or SFP optional switches. plugging a 2.5gb ethernet to a 1g ethernet on a 24 port switch with QSFP ports just diminishes the entire module for production with mid size or large size business environments. Seems that PF Sense is spending more time working on home lab infrastructure rather than industrial and larger business environments. I know PF Sense also supports LAGG and LACP. But this box thats being reviewed in video i would hard rather hard pass. Instead throw together an Dell R310 with an Quad SFP or dual QSFP controller with 32 gigs of ram dual 6 core cpu and 4 ssd's in raid 0. Thats my solution for business grade networking.
