We take a look at two new fanless 4x 2.5GbE systems with the Intel Celeron N5105 and i225-V and i226-V NICs and see how this new generation fares. We tried these systems with Proxmox VE for virtualization (Will looked at one with VMware ESXi linked below), pfSense, and OPNsense and found a few differences with this design. These have become popular router, firewall, and virtualization nodes, so we are doing a combined review of the two AliExpress units.

For those looking to run Proxmox on these boxes, there is a well-documented issue with the out of the box 5.15 kernel with these SoCs, you need to enable the 5.19 kernel for it to not crash the VMs every few days.

Hey Patrick, I've noticed that the Jasper Lake platforms may have a variable memory speed mechanic. One of the machines sitting on my desk for testing had that. I could see in CPUID, in windows, the memory would be at 2133mhz and then go up to 2933mhz and come back down to 2133.

I got one of these new i226-V N5105 versions with my last order, and Patrick failed to mention a few additional significant upgrades. Otherwise, thanks for doing these reviews, these are excellent home FW units. * First off, mine came pre-installed with an NVMe mezzanine card plugged into the "Wi-Fi" slot that allows two NVMe M2 hard drives to be installed (in place of using one for Wi-Fi). On the ordering page it indicates the expansion MVMe card is an additional $15 (don't know why they just threw it in, probably one of their first orders I suppose). * Second, the unit now supports TPM 2.0, so Windows 11 runs fine on it. I also installed an Intel Wi-Fi 6 adapter and Windows 11 and it works well. I purchased a second unit as a backup (worried about time to replace from China) and wanted to use it as a Windows PC when not needed because I've had no issues with my first unit running OPNsense. The older units will NOT run Windows 11.

I don't suppose anyone has any tips on installing ESXi 6.x on the N5105 model - it's driving me crazy. If I use a Rufus-made ESXi 6.5 boot stick, I get hanging at a black screen before the installer can start. I then got all creative and used VMWare workstation on a Windows PC, to install ESXI onto the physical NVME disk via a usb caddy. Stick the NVME into the PC and boot it up - blank screen again! BIOS can see there is a UEFI OS to boot from. If I use a Windows based USB installer stick, it boots into the installer no problem. ARRGHHHH
@polariz666
@polariz666 Рік тому
Managed to sort this. The answer was to use ESXi 6.7 onwards, as 6.5 or lower would exhibit this strange behaviour. I had to go for ESXi 8 though as 6.7 didn't support the NIC cards without alot of messing around with ISOs. Hopefully this is useful to somebody.
