The thnig that bugs me most about Amon's unmasking is that even if it was a real scar on his face, that absolutely doesn't disprove Korra's claims that he's whatshisface's son and that he's himself a bender. So this dude spends hours applying ultra-realistic makeup every morning in case he has to unmask *and it doesn't even work as an alibi* if you think about it.

My No. 1 complaint about the show was always how Korra gained airbending. The ENTIRE show it has been established again and again that air bending is more spiritual and that her impulsive, heated manner will make it more difficult for her to unlock. So, instead of getting an amazing moment where Korra tries to calm herself in the midst of this stressful situation, maybe finding solace in the thought of her new family or whatever, we get an ANGRY PUNCH. AN ANGRY PUNCH UNLOCKS AIRBENDING!!!!!

Ok i can somewhat clear up one part but the other is mostly just my headcanon. Amon takes away bending by blocking Chakras with bloodbending. Now why does Korra have airbending? Amon never learned to block that chakra because there was no airbender to practice on. My headcanon is that somehow this triggered some sort of reaction that allows her to airbend. Don't ask me what, but something in there. Aang (SOME GODDAMN SOMEWAY HOW) is able to ENERGYBEND this back, when they are ENTIRELY 2 DIFFERENT METHODS OF TAKING AWAY BENDING
@EvilStevilTheKenevilPEN15
@EvilStevilTheKenevilPEN15 3 місяці тому
In my own personal experience, _yeah actually_ that's how it happens sometimes. Not unlocking spiritual wind-magic, obviously, but we have inhibitions, shames, "hangups", things we've been conditioned not to say or even to _think_ no matter how true they actually are, etc. If you're neurodivergent you straight up have to pretend to be someone else just to get by in "normal" society, and it can be shockingly hard to take that mask off. There's also the possibility that you _deeply_ resent someone but, for one reason or another, _cannot_ escape them and for the time being remain trapped under their thumb, so you have to keep your mouth shut or else things will only get worse. Whatever the reason for it, you can only live a lie for so long before you lose your grip on truth. More than once now I have had some profound insight not through peace or through introspection, but through being _overwhelmed by fucking everything_ and having too much shit to juggle to keep up the charade anymore. More than once now I have had to learn who I _really_ am simply because _something_ had to give and reality won out. I don't _recommend_ self-discovery through crisis, it's certainly not healthy, but sometimes that's just how it happens.
@Rocksteady72a

No entirely sure how that's a big deal? They explicitly tell Korra that she basically brute-forced her way into airbending, but still doesn't know how to properly airbend & should continue training (then she refuses, and honestly never quite becomes adapt at it)

Are you saying that she should have had her bending taken away and proceeded to have like a 10 minute beat down by Amon where she has to progressively overcome her fear, guilt, shame, grief, lies, stubbornness, and earthly attachments as she is forced to stop the villain from killing all the bystanders and her friends? One where you could resolve a host of issues and character growth built over the course of the show? One where you could stage an amazing big damned hero moment with a full Avatar Awakening? Don't be foolish. Nobody would want to see that. Let alone have it built up to over the course of 11 episodes or something.

I think amon taking korras bending could have been amazing if he took one element at a time. He'd literally be showing the world that his abilities aren't just a fluke but he has merit and is constantly stronger than every bender. It would also add Alot for korra as she either has to hide her missing element or grapple with the loss of her identity. This would also lead better into air bending as she'd need to look into a different approach to defeating Amon.

It feels more like extra steps if anything. Why would Amon of all people would take away Korra's bending one at a time when he knows that in intimidating and threatening her to take her bending away is enough for Korra to be on her toes as he himself knows that although Korra is physically strong, she is mentally weak knowing that he can take away her bending but chose not to due to not seeing her as a threat (further digging into Korra's skin and showing that Amon is a good at manipulation). I think Amon definitely thought bending was evil. His experience was being tortured by the most powerful bloodbender in the world and ended up torturing his own brother. It makes sense that he would believe bending is evil. He sees bending as just power- specifically power over others. And I think he genuinely wants to ensure nobody can ever have the kind of power his father had over him- and that he has over others - again.
@metal100k
@metal100k 3 місяці тому
I get the rationale in your thought but if that's the case it wasn't conveyed well at all. Bloodbending was a forbidden technique and they literally had to go a mile or so away from their home to practice with their dad. There really didn't feel like a good transition from evil people with bending to bending is evil in his mindset that is shown. There is also the fact that amon originally really hated bloodbending due to its taboo nature and the fact that the only thing it could do was cause pain, unlike other forms of bending which have practical uses. The fact that there are reasonable potential explanations like this but they are never really shown like that is part of why the series frustrates me. They were so close to having convincing storytelling at so many points. You have a good rationale that is likely what the writers wanted to portray but didn't do all that well imo.

20:50 you say Iroh lacks an arc in A:tLA, but he absolutely does have one. Its just told non-linearly and not focused on as directly as the characters' whose arcs are more dramatic. If you look at how he responds to each time he visits Ba sing se, it becomes very clear: -First as a would-be conqueror in the flashbacks, patriotic and triumphant. -Then is season two as a humbled man mourning his son and just trying to build a peaceful life for his nephew, ignoring the war. -Finally as a liberator in season 3, with a refocused resolve to right the wrongs of his nation and protect those who he once sought to destroy. During the initial run of this season, there was some theory that Amon was using some advanced form of chi-blocking to disable bending. And really that would have worked so much better for two reasons: • Chi-bending has already been established as a part of the ATLA/Korra universe, meaning this is simply an evolution of the existing lore, much as combustion and lightning is to firebending. • It was established at the start of the season that Korra doesn't take the spiritual aspect of bending very seriously. This plot could have set up a second season where she is forced to swallow her pride and accept that she needs to learn it to unblock her bending. I also think it would have made more sense if instead of "unlocking" her airbending, she entered the Avatar state for the first time. Again, already established as a thing that can happen spontaneously during crisis, but it also sets up a conflict in the next season where Korra uses it recklessly since it's the only way she can bend, despite the dangers. Bah, this season was so disappointing to me.
@Xloi63
@Xloi63 3 місяці тому
The problem with that, a very good pitch for a multi-season arc, I'd say, is that the first season was meant to be the only season. Blame Nickolodean for playing keep away with the creative team and denying them a clearly laid out production schedule to work around. If the creators knew they'd have 4 seasons from the start, no doubt the series would have turned out wildly different.

@tbc1880
@tbc1880 3 місяці тому
And if they weren't sure if korra would get a second season they could end the with resolving the conflict between benders and non benders some way. In gundam ibo Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers! The protagonist basically ends up on the wrong side of the right fight in a way. But though they lose and they die, the aftermath leads to them getting the outcome their fight more or less was for (ignoring a bit though for motives). The season ending with korra losing her bending but resolving the issue for benders and non benders would be great. Of course they would need to have actual development on her diplomatic and leadership role as the avatar. Thus when it ends it suggests that with or without her bending, her most valued role can still be done. And if they got season two they can dive either into restoring her powers, spirituality or her role as a figurehead.

It's very common in real life to grow up thinking "I'll never be like my parents, I'm going to do things better", only to later in life suddenly realise we still often end up mirroring our parents in the end (usually this realisation comes in the form of yelling at our kids and hearing the exact same words our parents used on us come out). This is how I see Tarlok and Amon. They resented their father so much. Their lives were so dominated by the need to prove their father wrong that they each ended up enslaving themselves to his plan in an attempt to demonstrate they could do it better than him, "be" better than him. Like a self fulfilling prophecy though, the more they tried to outdo their father, the more they inadvertently just ended up mirroring him.

I think they should have had Korra's bending taken away far earlier, leading to more depression and her nearly ending things "leaving it to the next avatar." Then being directed by Aang to unlock her spirituality and unlock her bending. This solves several issues. It makes the constant losing make more sense, it allows for her to conquer her fear (and then Amon), and it gives more emphasis on her spiritual side and its relationship with her entire being.

Korra should have stayed airbender only after this season going into season 2, with access to the Avatar State when needed but not at will yet. The suddenly being able to do (punch style) airbending because the instinct kicks in with her other bending locked sorta works, but she would now have to actually learn to do it properly. Her deepest low finally making her introspective/spiritual enough to connect with her past lives makes enough sense. Season 2 could have kept the overall spiritual stuff, it ending with Korra reforging the original Avatar Bond (restoring her other bending), and the spirit portal opening going into S3 with the new airbenders like it did. I know why they had only single season plans up to S3 and S4 but the story would flow so much better with some slight changes.

I think what is so haunting about the end of amon and tarlock is that since Amon can sense movement well and what not with bloodbending, he knows tarlock is about to blow up the boat and that’s why he sheds a tear. Several problems I have with the bending in the show, demonstrated in this episode: All bending has devolved from different martial arts representing how each element works, to a bunch of generic punches and kicks. Supposedly, airbenders are light and free, waterbenders are able to adapt very well, earthbenders are strong and stable, firebenders are fierce and powerful, and their martial arts show those traits. Iroh had a whole monologue when teaching Zuko about precisely this. Lightning redirection is inspired by specific waterbending martial arts, for example. This is what bending in the world of Avatar SHOULD be, but now in Korra its basically "You wanna airbend? punch. How about firebend? Punch! Waterbend? Punch, maybe? Of course, punch if you wanna earthbend!". It's awful. What about lightning bending? Referring back to the Iroh lesson, lightning can only be produced by few, incredibly skilled firebenders. Not only that, there is a specific process to it. First, the bender has to separate positive and negative energies, creating an imbalance. Second, the two energies must be brought together, causing an extremely violent and turbulent event. Third, that violent energy must be guided out. In Korra, any Tom, Dick or Harry who can firebend can somehow lightningbend by simply pointing two fingers at the target, no skill nor process required.
@lkeblock1662
@lkeblock1662 3 місяці тому
To add on about the process of lightning bending, it's usually done with both hands. First the hands seperate the energies then bring them back together with a thrust to shoot it forward. But here Mako just kinda shoots it with one hand like he's Cuphead or something

Imagine if season 1 started with Korra getting her bending taken away. The explanation would have to be that Amon couldn't find/block airbending with bloodbending because Korra didn't figure out how to airbend. Korra could end up winning that fight with pure luck figuring out how to airbend out of desperation or necessity to survive or whatever. The rest of the season could have been Korra learning airbending and learning spirit world stuff. The ending of season 1 can still be Aang giving back Korra's bending, but then in the spirit world or something. At least there could've been a build up to that moment. Basically Aang would take the role of Roku, guiding to something that needs to happen. Not sure if it would make things better but at least there's potentially somewhat of a storyline that could matter.

For the plane engine exploding thing, those propeller planes have a radial engine just behind them to spin the propeller. That bola would not be capable of stopping the propeller, but if it somehow did than the huge engine also stops. The torque of the motor is probably high enough that the entire plane would begin to rotate the opposite direction that engine was spinning, but there might be too much air resistance or something. The plane in the show didn't rotate at all, so we can assume that the either engine stopped all at once or, more likely, the engine disconnected from the propeller. But, if it somehow did stay connected and stopped all at once, then maybe it could've caught fire. There's no doubt that it would cause critical engine damage, and that damage could easily lead to fuel leaks. However, those planes are super old, and therefore probably use a distributor to send electric signals to the spark plugs, in which case the distributor would stop immediately and no spark would ignite. So I don't think it would explode, but parts could go flying due to centrifugal force and there could be a fire. tl;dr the bola wouldn't stop the propeller, but if it did then the engine would disconnect from the propeller, but if it didn't it could be damaged enough to cause a fuel leak but there'd be no spark to ignite it, but if there was a spark to ignite it it would only catch fire and not explode. tl;dr^2 no the engine wouldn't fucking explode

Amon’s motivation was that he actually DID think bending is inherently evil. He gained that belief from growing up with an evil abusive father who tried to subjugate others with bloodbending. Amon extended that belief to think that other benders will also use their power to abuse those who are weaker. So the motivation for his actions wasn’t to do his fathers bidding, even though taking out the Avatar was something his father wanted. When Amon’s brother says “our father set us on this path”, he’s talking about how growing up with their father seriously messed up their personalities and moralities, leading to their fallen paths. As for Korra “unlocking” her air bending even though Amon supposedly took it away, my personal belief is that Amon uses bloodbending to permanently damage parts of the body where benders channel Chi through their Chakras. But Korra’s Chakra for air bending was already blocked, and had been for all her life. So either Amon didn’t damage that Chakra because he sensed it was already closed, or he didn’t damage it correctly because this was the first time he tried to close air bending Chakras. But it’s just a theory, and this whole part definitely could have been written better.

To your first argument. I would believe that if he actually did disfigure his own face. Then the symbolism would be that he really does hate what his lineage represents, and would go so far to hurt himself to punish himself and his mask would be to mask his biological nature. But this is just not the case BECAUSE of the make-up. Now the symbolism is that he's not who he says he is, and the mask is (unfortunately) a redundant representation that his true nature is not what he's saying. He's just a fraud, plain and simple, and we don't particularly know why. His character would be so much more interesting to dissect if he actually disfigured his own face.

I like to think that Ty Lee proved there is a connection with chi and bending during ATLA when she blocked both with her strikes. Considering Amon uses a combination of chi blocking and blood bending to block bending, its not far fetched to assume he does it through blocking chi paths in the body that only benders have. Korra having already had a relatively "blocked" chi path to her airbending could lend credence to the notion that disrupting the flow to her other chi paths dislodged her blockage in her airbending path
@snowboundwhale6860
@snowboundwhale6860 3 місяці тому
Considering Amon seems to have invented his technique and has only ever used it on ordinary benders before, it's believable that he also doesn't actually have perfect knowledge regarding it; There must have been an experimental phase in there at some point where he was figuring things out and he wouldn't necessarily have found everything especially regarding anomalies like the avatar. Given each element is primarily tied to specific chakras, and that Korra already had a blocked chakra that was interfering with airbending, it's arguable that Amon had tried to hit all the major chakras to try and cancel out all types of bending knowing that as the avatar Korra should have all 4 elements, in which case he might have been directly responsible for "unlocking" Korra's airbending. If 3 of 4 "switches" were "on" and the fourth was "off", and he flipped all 4 assuming they were all on, then the first 3 are turned off but the last turns on.

See, you lost me at the end there... Because that implies Korra's lack of air bending was the result of a chi blockage, but that was never established in the show. Korra's problem was always her not being able to get into the mentality of an Airbender. She lacked any spiritual connection and the "go with the flow" nature of air wasnt clicking with her. The first probending episode was dedicated to establishing this, and it's consistent with why Aang wasn't able to earthbend at first. Amon's chi blocking didnt change her mentality when it came to bending since she's just fire bending with air and we dont get any spiritual connection established until they get to the south pole, so Korra didnt really overcome either of the things they established her needed to in order to air bend in this moment on top of her having her bending taken away in general. This is my main problem with that scene, cause now to make sense of why she just gets to air bend anyway, the fanbase now has to make up any sort of potential excuse that the writers didnt think enough for, ranging from Amon somehow screwing it up (something awfully convenient to happen in THIS moment) or that Amon, for one reason or another, just cant take it away (which makes no sense both for the reason that was said in the video, and because why would the writers set up him getting ready to take away Tezin and his family's bending if he couldnt take away the bending of an airbender? It removes any tension that scene would have to argue he couldnt take an airbender's bending). Both reasonings are contrived as hell

Air bending works on a different system than the other elements. Just like how Zuko lost his bending when he lost his purpose,any air bender can lose their bending if they lose their spirituality. Kyoshi’s mother is a famous example of a former air nomad who lost her bending when she left the other nomads for love and thievery so she lost most of her bending ability. Aang tells Korra that when we were at our lowest point we’re capable of the most change. Korra losing her bending was essentially her losing the part of herself that was holding her back from air bending in the first place. We never see any other air benders get their bending taken away so we don’t know if it would even work on them.
@Falllll

It still feels unearned is the issue. I don't really care about the technical explanation of why she's able to or not, although I do think it makes little to no sense, but it feels like a complete deus ex machina. You don't hit rock bottom and then that's it, you're over whatever it was that was holding you back. She doesn't seem to make any particular change to who she is or anything to make the moment feel earned. They do themselves no favors by making it just like she's firebending, but with air. "I can airbend?!?" is a pretty appropriate reaction.
@natsuquilava7917
@natsuquilava7917 3 місяці тому
The problem with that is that we know that all bending requires chi flow, energy traveling through the body to make bending work. It's why chi blockers exist. By your logic, chi blocking shouldnt work on Korra since she'd still have the drive of a fire bender and thus still be able to fire bend. We can assume Amon's bending removal takes some aspects of chi blocking (The water tribe has been shown to be very knowledgeable on chi flow because of their healers). He would have to be physically disrupting the flow of chi with blood bending to stop bending permanently since hes not energy bending. At that point, spiritually wouldn't matter unless you show a spirit or something helping her do it, which they didnt. There wasnt any spiritual realization till long after her air bending moment, and she had basically been advance chi blocked, so the rules should say she cant bend

I have to be honest, i hate the scene where Korra “learns” how to air bend, it doesn't feel deserved and comes out of nowhere but my main issue is because surprise, surprise LOK is inconsistent with airbender, when Aang learns earth and fire he actively changes in someway either his philosophy or his view of bending as a whole which ties into the spiritual and philosophical side of bending, it help build up the magic system and world building as a whole. But when Korra learns air bending nothing changes she doesn't learn anything all we see her do is throw a punch at amon, Except this time it works because PLOT! Which brings me to ask why couldn't the airbend before? The fact she didn't change leads me to believe the only reason she couldn't is cause she wasn't trying hard enough and if you're going to say it was out of anger or desperation then might as have go super Saiyan to beat amon

Just an explanation on how i think the "stealing" of powers work. In ATLA we learnd about chakras and how they work. My idea is that he switches every chakra button once, which kills every bending you have unlocked, but opens the ones that are closed. This never happend before, because only the avatar has the four buttons of the elements and not people who can only bend one. This could open a ton of ideas where everyone has these buttons, but they are so rusty that they don't work. Over the years training with the other elements allows them to move again. Which creates lava bending (rock/fire), metal (rock/water), cloud (air/water), plant (water/rock), combustion (fire/air), sand (rock/air) and lightning (fire/water). A person like iroh was an avatar, because he used all four elements in his fighting/life style.
@MrThatguyuknow
@MrThatguyuknow 3 місяці тому
I'm ok with Iroh's fire flying. He's set up to be the strongest firebender just by birthright, and it's not too indulgent. It's more like a scared chicken long jumping into a tree to escape a fox than the precision Ironman stuff that was happening during the comet. I totally get the sentiment though. It's why I felt they jumped the shark with tech too.
@CraftingMenace
@CraftingMenace 3 місяці тому
I really like the *concept* of the final battle being all her bendings are taken away and she's just left with air bending, but I feel like it'd need a better set up. Maybe if there was something subtle leading up, like Amon has different stances for taking away each type of bending throughout the season, maybe shown off when he takes away that pro bending teams bending, so he has to do all 3 on Kora throughout a battle. Like, a one on one where throughout he lowers her options and he never gets to the air bending because one he's cut off by his lieutenant and two Korra no longer is using any bending. Even if he's gonna try to do it with the theoretical "air bending yoink" style, if it's not brought up between then and when she finally does it a lot probably wouldn't think of it so it could still be played like a bit of a reveal.

6:20, as someone who's taken aviation classes and has learned about the basics of flying, I can't say I know whole heaps compared to someone with a private pilot license or someone in the industry, but what I DO know is that a propellor spins so quickly that its actually dangerous to be around it (as in it can cut off limbs if you aren't careful). With that in mind, either this rope device won't work because of the way winds work at higher altitudes (wind shear occurs at ALL altitudes and is HIGHLY unpredictable), or it SOMEHOW hits the prop, but splits apart very quickly unless the material of the rope is REALLY REALLY strong. I also don't think that the entire aircraft would explode like that. It would require a highly unstable reaction, for example, a missile hitting your plane via Surface to Air Missile site causing a fire on the aircraft, then leading to engine failure, to an inevitable loss of the aircraft. That's just my two-sense on this topic though; I could be missing a lot of key ideas and details.
@JackPhoenixCz
@JackPhoenixCz 3 місяці тому
In theory, by stopping the propeller, assuming the rope is strong enough for that, the engine could rip itself apart from the stress and cause a fuel fire. I'm not sure if that can happen with propeller plane, though, but there are multiple examples of jet engines deciding mid-flight their constituent components need some extra space.

Guru Pathik said that the Air Chakra is located in the heart and is blocked by grief. It’s possible the Chakra was already blocked when Amon was removing her bending and so had no way block it further. Korra on the other hand unblocked it herself when she saw Mako being ragdolled as she began to cope with her own grief of losing to Amon and it not taking away her ability to try to fight back.
@sonicfan4511

But Korra was struggling with airbending long before she had any grief, or really any problems at all. I could buy this if maybe Korra started making the first steps toward airbending, but then regressed after Amon captured her, with that event blocking the chakra.
@jambrown1397
@jambrown1397 3 місяці тому
@@sonicfan4511 we do see progression though. She learned how to do the spinning leaf thing in the pro bending arena. There’s obviously some element of mentality which blocks the avatar’s ability to initially learn an element. I.e. Aang with earth bending. Tenzin notes it for Korra and air bending too. However we do see some initial progress in Korra, but she also has grief over not being able to handle Amon which is blocking further progress. I’m not saying the writing couldn’t have been better for this, but I think it makes sense that a self blocked chakra can be unblocked. She was at her lowest point and became open to the most change when she lost her other bending. Allowing her to unblock the air chakra and finally bend.
