6:43 - My hot take on Varrick: Fans like him because he is funny, not because he makes sense in-universe or is consistently written. The dude ping-pongs back and forth between hero and villain multiple times, and literally nobody seems to care. He has fuck-you money and solves every problem in the most outlandish way possible (but those outlandish solutions somehow always seem to work). Maybe this is because he's The Fool, and the writers conspire to put him in situations where the winning move happens to be the most bizarre move, or maybe it's because throwing money at a problem will often solve it (even if you also did a bunch of weird stuff that shouldn't work). Either way, he is a much-needed source of amusement in the rather dark and dreary season two, which is probably why fans like him so much.

I think the important distinction that ATLA made that Korra has so far failed to make is that spirits are not the same as monsters. The spirits depiction in ATLA was clearly inspired by Miyazaki’s work and they managed to make the spirits mysterious and at times sinister, while also allowing them to be reasoned with and act as some unknown forces distinct from the traditional “Monster bad. Must defeat.” thing. That was pretty much the whole of point of Hai Bai’s episode. Spirit bending spits in the face of all that ground work and a lot of potential nuance Korra could have explored. Also more season 2 yes please
@battlesheep25523 місяці тому

@mirkwood5793 місяці тому
While yes, that is fair that rocket wouldn't be unreasonable to say, booster rocket is a much more specific to space programs thing that doesn't make a whole lotta sense unless people are trying to use fireworks to fly things and also have a big set of fireworks to start off and then use the non-booster rockets to maneuver. @@RacingSnails64 honestly, the Avatar Wan episodes were the biggest boredom of this season for me, I was sort of invested in the series, then we get this entire exposition dump about it. It would've made more sense if this was during downtime for Aang, instead of Korra, who is not exactly keen of history to begin with, while Aang could find some semblence of respect in that lore. Unalak is a weak villain, his entire stick is just "traditions must be upheld!" (oh btw, i'm also with the red lotus and ready to kill the avatar) I like Kuvira in the next season, she was just outright batshit insane and had the power to back it up, while now shying away from her viewpoints, not hiding in the shadows for ages till it's finally time to strike, I like that more and the whole "villain is behind you but pretending to be a good guy" is overdone to hell.

Great video! I really like how you analyze the overall story of the episode isolated from the rest of the season even though you know the (bad) ending. I know I usually lump them all together but you are right that the setup for the spirits being upset is pretty good here.

I think this could have served as an opener to a first season much better than the second season. Imagine if Amon was the second season, and Tarlok was an angry former council member trying to regain his former power after the switch to democracy.

@DarkDyllon3 місяці тому
it had some decent setups, like setting up the spirit conflict concidering that spirits have been largely absent for the majority of Avatar, except those few times Aang communicated with them. it's a nice setup, but it's largely ruined because Korra is back to her immature pre-development state, you'd think she matured a lot during that 1st season, she went from "i'm the fucking Avatar, I can do anything!" to "i'm a ... non bender now?!" she got humbled hard, yet she's right back to the "i'm the fucking Avatar" stick again. I like that Mako actually had some development outside "i'm Korra's love interest, now i'm Sami's love interest, now i'm Korra's love interest" and that Sami kinda moved on at this point. Bolin is Bolin, he doesn't change through the entire series, which is fine, you need a character like him around (although I don't like how powerful he becomes later on with lava bending) It feels off aswell that Tenzin kinda makes the same mistake he did early on, focusing to hard on Korra's training, he knows that Korra is a rebel at heart, give her some space, let her be a person, maybe that rebelious attitute would go down quite a bit if she can out herself a bit more instead of "you're the Avatar, now train constantly" It didn't work for Aang, Aang also needed some rest between training sessions to work things, out, since we see them do a daily training session like when Katara and Toph are launching attacks at Aang blindfolded, when that's over, they chill, no idea why Tenzin is so obsessed with drumming that training into her skull, in a sense, he literally pushed Korra into Unalak's plan. The season is a long 1 unfortunately, but atleast next season is Kovira, where Toph returns and kicks ass as we know it and has some decent things going on. (also, I dread seeing the whole "1st avatar" backstory again, felt like such a wasted time watching that episode.)

It never even clicked with me that the main cast shouldn’t know that Amon isn’t a threat, they really SHOULD be worried. Maybe it would’ve been a cool misdirect for Unalok to be completely new to everyone and be suspected of being Amon with plastic surgery, only for him to reveal that he has nothing to do with Amon and has his own separate motivations that they didn’t see because they were so paranoid and hyperfocusing on anything Amon-related
@DkgowМісяць тому
While it would be bad writing, and a bit of cope/me filling in what the writers didn't, I think we could assume that after Amon/equalist not doing anything even a few months after (since we had a 6 month time jump), they would just assume that Amon was ousted and no one picked up where he left off. Again, not trying to say it was good on their part for doing it.

I've seen it said that the reason Korra used the avatar state in the race was so Aang could race his grandkids. Probably not what the show intended but nice to think about.
@KairuHakubi3 місяці тому
it's too bad she can't do that trick Aang did with Kyoshi where she suddenly INCARNATES again, and then let Aang talk to his family. but it'd probably be too weird. "oh yeah um i mean you guys are coming to join me someday, but not... not here inside korra's head you're not. and then the next one after korra and oh god i just realized i'm going to be roommates with korra forever." And then she solved that in this season and Aang could relax 8D

I know 4:30 is probably just meant as a joke, but I don't think it's impossible someone spotted the huge explosion and thats how everyone knows Amon is dead. But even if she doesn't know, Korra can enter the avatar state at will now. She knows it can overpower bloodbending since she saw it Aang's memory so she has no reason to be afraid anymore.

@grank81893 місяці тому
As an Asian I really hate how Korra butchered the spiritual concept of the franchise. ATLA got it right, but in Korra spirits are just these creatures living in an alternate world, and you just shoot lasers at them. They don't even try to understand their nature. Remember how both Hei Bai and Wan Shi Tong are spirits that represent something, and how respecting/disrespecting their wishes was an important part of the story. You know, the spiritual part. Spirit as in your soul and emotion. Not spirit as in magical voodoo folk magic.

I think the "ambient darkness" from her eyes is meant as a sort of in world camera effect, to show that her eyes are so bright that it makes the lens close its iris, even though there is no actual camera. As for rockets it can be a term to just refer to a fast object like in the mid 1800’s there was a train with a max speed of 30 kph and it was regarded as the fastest thing on earth but we have seen a type of rocket in avatar, fireworks.

"But these fire blasts don't seem to be much stronger than anything we've seen her do before, very much not in the same level than Aang was" Hmm, I agree that fire blasts should be stronger than when she's in her normal state, but in that shot of Aang you showed, remember all fire bending got absurdly enhanced due to Sozin's Comet, including Aang's in his Avatar state.
@milhy65673 місяці тому
Yes but in the original show they explicitly said that 5 whole fire sages need to work together to open Roku's temple while a fully realized avatar can do it alone. Not to mention the scene of a past avatar using it to make 4 volcanoes erupt at the same time.

anh yes, the infamous Korra season 2, the one that was "unexpected" cause the creators only thought they were making one season, despite the fact that season 2 aired less than a year after the ending of season 1, and anyone who knows at least a little about production of shows/movies knows that it takes YEARS for pre production to happen plus the actual production that can take several months to a year. If this isnt cope i dont know what it is.
