One of the biggest things I've gravitated to actually. His open story telling reminds me of myself in so many ways. It's amazing when someone comes along and instead of trying to put on this show to influence them to be this or that, they remind people that we've all gone through a lot of the same things. He touches on things a lot of people never bring themselves to talk or even sometimes aren't able to . These kinda folks are a gem for us n I'm glad to see him picking up a following.

Depends how you look at it. My parents broke up before I could finish primary. I've probably moved 9-10 times in my life. It was hard, but also just a fact of life. When I look back, whether it's somewhere I still hang around or somewhere I left, they're equally nostalgic, sad or happy.

@___xyz___
@___xyz___ 3 роки тому
@@austinvanderhye882 To be honest, it wasn't the moving itself that was the hardest to get past. When I look back, I would say that in my case the moving may have been a positive thing. I got to experience so many different places and ways of living. That itself has taught me much. What was hard was the context. The family situation of being a child living 50-50 with mom and dad. If you count _that_ I guess you could say I've "moved" in the range of 400 times. The strictness of it dictated which friends I had the physical opportunity of hanging out with, and in general how it was feasible for me to live my life. I had to plan everything. As a kid, the worst thing was surely having to coordinate which textbooks I had where, so that I wouldn't miss bringing them to school any week. I remember all that stuff. Which friends I hung out with each unique place I lived other the course of those 10-15 years wasn't something I cared about that much. I probably had one of the most geographically diverse range of friends, and I replaced them easily without any drama, being a kid and all.

The part where he goes out and sits on the roof for the first time is my favorite. There's something so odd about experiencing something for the first time when it's wrapped in the lens of it being most likely the last time you'll be in that place. It's like how in my last day of living in the dorms we broke into an unused room and hung out for like an hour. It was kinda fun, but the whole experience had a cloud of regret over it because we hadn't broken in sooner. Love the video Joel, it's a great little window into your life and captures a lot of difficult-to-explain emotions.

I'm an art historian and I've been binging your videos the past two weeks, and I kept noticing that painting in the background. I immediately thought it looked like a Moyses van Wtenbrouck, but every time I saw it I kept wondering if it was real. Like, who would have a reproduction of a Van Wtenbrouck painting? Does anyone even make repros of his work? Who would order a custom repro of a Van Wtenbrouck? Eventually I found the original listed in a Christie's sale from 2007 (it notes that it is signed dated 1624). Still, I kept wondering if yours was this painting... And how might this 17th c. painting come into your possession?! Glad to finally know. Also, good vids.

This really was beautiful Joel. There is something about the nostalgia of places, the indelible connections we form to those spatial pieces of our lives that we end up carrying with us forever as memories, that deeply fascinates and often haunts me. I feel like we tend to conceive of "life" primarily as a stream of conscious experiences... but in a very real sense, life is also equally as composed of the People and of the Places that come together to form those experiences; and in this way the physical environments embedded within our life's river of experiences really are more than just "places", they are a literal part of the fabric of our lives- forever inextricably linked to who we have become, via the past... A part of us, in the most real, meaningful sense. And this thought, combined with time's unrelenting process of alienating us from our lives' Places (along with their people and their experiences), often feels like a weight which I struggle to capture in my music. But it's something I think you navigated with an admirable balance of effortless humor and honest, unguarded sincerity here... This is life, a little snapshot of it. The joy, the pain, the growth, the loss, the new... all slowly becoming old with the years, passing us forever in the stream of time- but greeting us still like old friends as we turn back to remember again, whenever we revisit the physical places that birthed them. Just, beautiful man. My favorite video of yours so far... If I'm being honest, "I cried here." lol Keep up the inspiring work bro, I really think you're doing what you're meant to be doing.

Oh man I know the feeling. My mother had to sell our (and her) childhood home last summer since she just couldn’t deal with it anymore. I supported her decision of course and helped her with the move, but I won’t lie, I was so so sad.. I still am sometimes! And I think that’s okay. But I try to remind myself that our roots are not defined by a physical, ancestral house but rather our memories and experiences. It does get better

I'm 32 and parents just sold the house of 30 years in the summer. I had left for some years, came back for a while, etc, but it was still home. It was the place where so many things happened, I could even recognize a stain on a wall from decades before and remember why it was there, what caused it, and what we had been doing that day. A really strange feeling to leave. But, once it happened, it also felt freeing. That cliché saying "the more things we own, the more those things own us" is pretty true. Bitter sweet, the whole thing.

One of, if not the very first, video of yours that I watched featured your dad. I noticed I hadn't seen him in any new videos, but didn't learn he passed away until I watched this one. I didn't expect this video, film really, to contain such an raw slice of your life. When you said your dad passed away, something in me shifted slightly. I chuckled when you showed all the places you cried. So relatable, but something no one ever talks about. It shifted again when you talked about the person you first loved, then were left by. I chuckled again when your cat trilled in agreement. A few moments after that had to pause the video because I started sobbing. I'm still sobbing. I think you've captured something with this film. Growing up? Experiencing loss? Nostalgia in it's truest form, not the connotative idea of the word. These 16 minutes and 42 seconds is some of the most precious time I've ever spent watching anything. Thank you for this. Is it wrong that I laughed out loud at the “I cried here” part? That was so darling and endearing. I swear I’m not laughing at the actual sorrow, which I’m certain we’ve all tasted in some form in our lives. This reminds me of when I was last in my Grandmere’s “opulent” (in my kid eye’s opinion) apartment. Visiting her there was such a part of my young life. I felt like a princess. I still have dreams of being there. Some time ago during a street fair on a very hot summer night, I had the chance to peek into the apartment about 20 years after I was last there. The new occupants had revamped a lot of the space, adding a wall and redoing the kitchen with modern cheap appliances, instead of the avocado green and 1920’s appliances, table and sink. Same space, totally different ‘feel’. It was then I realized it was HER, not so much that space, that I loved so much and the way the essence that is HER occupied that space, via decor and personal things. A home is a reflection of the soul that inhabits it. A house is a mere building, a blank canvas, ready to be occupied and filled with whatever the new occupants decide how to care for it and what to fill it with, for better or worse.
@dewinmoonl
@dewinmoonl 2 роки тому
10:53 I can emphasize with that feeling so much. I was with my SO at the time in an apartment, when she left the room was just so big and empty, there simply isn't enough "life" to fill it. It was empty, big, echoing, and hollow. I'd wake up and cry in the empty room. It was horrifying

Its nice to see that that the "i have social anxiety and I'm asking for directions" style of speaking is actually how you are and not an act for your videos.

Also that cat either fully comprehends the English language or he has great comedic timing, either way that’s pretty impressive.

Something about when you sat on the roof of your old house really got to me. The feeling of nostalgia was palpable. It reminded me of all the memories I had in my 20's that were important to me alone.

very good video I liked how everytime you "move on" to different place, you get ready to leave, turn off the lights, and shut the door behind.

Joel, thank you for being so authentic and never giving up. I appreciate what you're doing on youtube and in life. Whenever I can in conversation, I share your name in the hopes that people will check out your channel. The comedic touch you have is one-of-a-kind. The creative cuts, voice over and camera angles are SO entertaining. Keep it rocking dude!!!!

The final shot where you turn the camera around sent a little shiver down my spine. I used to play soccer there growing up. You capture western mass's spirit so well - the quiet beauty, the subtle absurdity, the calm nature, and the legacy of storytelling. Thanks for your filmmaking!

Hey Joel, like many others, I stumbled upon your work only recently and have been watching all your videos. This one in particular hit close to home (I've moved at least a dozen times in my childhood) and made me cry and laugh, sometimes both. I'm so glad I found your channel - you have an intriguing wit, and a gift for storytelling. Here's to blowing up in 2021!
