If you pay attention to the news, you may remember lots of frightening stories about Tesla’s crashing under the direction of their infallible autopilot systems, or have images of a Tesla Model 3 engulfed in flames seared into your memory.
The message is clear, be wary of these new fangled electric cars, and their deadly high voltage battery packs.
Are Tesla’s really more dangerous than conventional combustion powered vehicles, and if not, why does it seem like there’s a disproportionate amount of media coverage of Tesla accidents?
The truth is the probability of electric vehicles catching on fire is lower than cars with internal combustion engines, and according to researchers only one fire occurs for every 100 million properly used Lithium ion batteries on the market.
Tesla’s revolutionary mix of passive safety and active safety features give Tesla some of the best crash test ratings. In fact, their Model X is the only SUV in history that hasn’t rolled over in the multiple tests that have been performed, with each and every outcome, the Model X came back to its upright position with incredible ease. But the Model S and Model 3 have also been praised for their unique features that allowed them to achieve the lowest overall injury probability out of any vehicle that was ever tested by the US government’s New Car Assessment Program.
When talking about “passive safety” we refer to all the elements that can protect the driver during an accident: the overall architecture, the airbags and the structure of the seats, as well as roof strength. All of the Tesla models tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performed incredibly well but there was a model that outdid every other car that was ever tested, and that was the incredible Model 3.
In fact, the Tesla Model 3 is so safe that it was granted the “2020 Top Safety Pick+” distinction by the IIHS, receiving the “Good” rating, which is their highest score, in all the important categories. The moderate overlap crash test as well as the side crash test showed the driver injury staying in the green which means that in case of an accident, you can get out virtually unscathed from a Model 3. And all of these are made possible by one evident feature electric cars have: a lack of an engine.
When talking about airbags and seat structure, Tesla’s budget sedan excels with its custom designed restraint system that keep occupants safely in place thanks to the pre-tensioners and load-limiters, making the proprietary design of the seats yet another winning element that helped it score the maximum safety marks both from the IIHS and the NHTSA crash tests.
Between 2012 and 2019 there was only one vehicle fire for every 175 million miles traveled in a Tesla. To put this into context, data from the National Fire Protection Association and US Department of Transportation revealed that in the United States there is a vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled in all vehicles, a 9.2X higher likelihood of fire than the Tesla.
Tesla’s state-of-the-art battery design prevents fires, and in the case of a crash, the safety system works in such a way that it isolates the fire to certain areas within the battery pack while simultaneously venting the heat away from the cabin and the passengers.
The Tesla Model X became the first ever SUV to refuse to roll over.
The Model S was destroying the NHTSA’s roof-crushing test equipment before it could even register a result past 4Gs, which would have meant that 4 model S’s could be piled up on top of each other without the cabin caving in. Interestingly enough, the Model S also exceeded a safety score above all SUVs and minivans.
Collision avoidance, extra-smart autopilot and lane assist functions, contribute to the great crash rate prevention. In the first quarter of 2020, Tesla reported that they registered only one accident for every 4.68 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged.
The Tesla Model Y has been taken apart by the auto engineering expert Sandy Munro and the findings were quite amazing.
Tesla says all new cars have the hardware capable of full self driving. When the automaker inevitably reaches level 5 full self driving, where the driverless car can operate on any road and in any conditions a human driver could negotiate, it won’t be just equal to a human driver, it will likely be orders of magnitude safer. In the not too distant future, when all cars on the road are full self driving and operate in sync, we will see exponential advances in vehicle safety as we remove the fallible human element from operation.

I watched a lady back out of her parking spot at the grocery store, try to brake and her foot slipped off and hit the accelerator. She froze at the wheel as the car clipped three others in reverse, almost hit shoppers, and come to a stop against the metal guard poles at the entrance. It was a standard internal combustion car..not a Tesla. Never made any of the local news stations or newspaper. I am 77 years old. In the 70's I remember Ford cars bursting into flames at idle or stop signs. Cause was later found to be a 15cent rubber tube to the carburetor that leaked gas on the block. Never made headlines.

My main concern is the mindset of the push for self driving cars. I think it is a great idea and will save a lot of lives and traffic issues in the very long run. Some manufacturers however, have even predicted the demise of the steering wheel. He alluded to when all cars on the road are self driving. If you live outside of the highly urban areas, of which there are a lot, there will always be a need for a manual mode. Think farm trucks on fields, driving on private driveways without the clear markings to guide self driving cars, driving cut lines for power line maintenance and so much more. I would certainly consider an EV for my next vehicle, but definitely affordability would be a major factor.

Post the time stamp where he says ONLY Tesla has those two cherry picked items of yours, or silently disappear back into your irrelevant lala land and make up more nonsense to fool yourself into thinking you made a good point (You didn't, btw). Solution: don’t use it. Obviously people are being caught out when two seconds away from crashing, the “ding ding ding” alerts the driver to take back the controls. Too little time. So the obvious message is don’t use it. Autonomous vehicles only work when it is a regular, short run, say a people carrier from train station to shopping station. Liability for crashes and deaths will put Tesla out of business. Two Trucks in convoy with a driver in the front one may work. But I would not trust autopilot when I drive. I don’t even want to have the capability for self-driving. Self-parking and summoning in valet mode potentially sounds good though.

How do you know it will always work? If cameras are blocked or malfunction, it can crash.
@Yamyatos
@Yamyatos Рік тому
@@realnapster1522 You cant know it always works. Just like you cant know you always work, or whoever is driving the car. However, statistically, it is far, far more likely to work reliably than humans ever could. The overwhelming majority of accidents is due to driver error, and we could reduce that amount to a fraction of what it currently is by relying more (or, in the future completely) on computer assisted driving. Sure, this might introduce some new kinds of accidents. However, each accident will provide data we can use to train the system to not repeat such errors. Something we simply cant say about humans - especially once we consider we have to teach each new generation anew, who will then keep on repeating the same mistakes again and again for centuries to come. It is also worth mentioning that most self driving cars do not rely on cameras as their only, or even main sensors. This has proven to be too unreliable, especially in very bright, reflective or dark environments. Instead there is a multitude of sensors providing data to build a good model of the close to middle-distant surroundings. If any one (or more) such systems fail, the car will still drive perfectly fine. And it will know and notify you about the problem, so you can get it fixed. Compare that to grandmas eye sight slowly deteriorating over time, or people getting into their cars drunk, or texting while driving. A self driving car has several sets of 360° sensors providing it information all the time, while us humans have a barely functional set of eyes which we can only use to look in one direction at a time, having a multitude of blind spots (both the eye itself, aswell as due to car structures) and, compared to computers, insanely slow reaction speeds. Quite frankly.. self driving cars are the future. Even now they are better suited for driving than any human for most situations. In the future there wont the cornercases where humans outperform the technology anymore. In a farther future, you wont be allowed to manually drive a car on public roads due to public safety concerns. On a side note, self driving cars will *heavily* improve traffic flow once they make up a notable proportion of cars on the roads. Things like phantom jams, which make up a major part of highway jams, simply cant happen with self driving cars, because they can be coordinated. Traffic lights, and signs for the most part, are only there for us humans. If there was only self-driving cars you could go through any crossing at 50 km/h and wouldnt need to stop at all. There would be no jams or congestions whatsoever. Traffic lights would only serve for pedestrians to cross a road. A fantastic future, even tho we obviously are not quite there yet.
@Speeder84XL
@Speeder84XL Рік тому
@@Yamyatos I see that you seem like you don't like driving. I hope it will never go that far signs and traffic lights are removed - that would be an attack on freedom and all of us who like to drive and car enthusiasts. You wouldn't be able to go 50 km/h straight thru an intersection anyway, unless car to car communication over 5G or similar is implemented - but then new risks would be introduced, such as hacker attacks or jamming attacks. Spyware and malware is already a problem for ordinary computers, so that would indeed be a problem for the computers in the cars as well. It can be possible by cars using just sensors if traffic flow is very light - but the same can be achieved for manual driving as well. For example traffic lights on sensors are quite common. I have a few intersections that I often pass thru at 80-100 km/h - when passing the senor, the light turns green when still far enough from it to be able to stop from that speed if needed to (unless other cars are on the crossing roads - which is well visible beforehand). I'm not against self driving cars as such - it's great for those who don't want or can drive for various reasons. I, would use it my self in slow traffic (where manual driving isn't that fun anyway) - and that's where it would really help against those "phantom traffic jams" you mentioned. All that would be needed is to monitor average speed of traffic continuously and send that data to all the cars, to keep that speed. Because the problem is just that we human drivers don't want to "go slower than needed", so we have an urge to speed up as soon as the distance to the cars in front increases significantly (also because we think we don't want to annoy drivers behind by leaving too much distance to the car in front). The drivers behind think the same. This causes a group of vehicles to go temporarily faster than the average flow - when that group catches up to the slower traffic ahead, it will compress into a small congestion that often moves slow enough for more traffic to start to catch up from behind and everyone have to brake more and more until it grows into a real traffic jam. It's also good if you don't know where to go in a city (since all self driving cars will stored maps and road data about lanes and such things) - like a navigator that can also drive the car and plan ahead like someone who already knows the road - no "changing lane in the last second" and stuff that you often get, trying to navigate a city where you don't know the roads very well. Also when it comes to human drivers and accidents - your examples is typical causes of accidents - or just bad drivers. The problem is that unlike self driving cars where every car drives the way it's programmed to do, all human drivers are not the same - just a few drivers causes the majority of accidents, so why punish everyone. But, if people have the option to turn on the autopilot while texting - most of them would probably do it (since it's not their goal to drive dangerously, even if they don't care as it is now) - same thing goes for drunk drivers or grandma with bad vision. So it would probably do a lot for the safety, without take the freedom away from everyone who really like to drive. But we all know how politicians are...

Model 3 and X are the safest cars ever tested. I owned 20+ cars and now a model 3. Never going back to gas unless they release a 500mpg+ vapor injection gas engine that gets almost zero emissions. They have had the tech since the 1960s. Shell Oil Research etc shelved the designs. There are prototypes that people have. Might be on UKposts still 1960's Ford Ranchero getting 200+mpg. A collector has it now. There are ways to make a gas engine not to use oil and burn almost 100% efficient.

Frankly, it is more of a cult following that loves Tesla and Elon Musk. A Consumer Reports test found several flaws in the Tesla design. Most alarming was that the break tests left the Tesla with a 21 foot distance longer in breaking than other models in the same class. Additionally, the technology heavy car has removed many of the controls and run them through the center mounted touch screen. It was found that making adjustments took more steps than other automobiles and distracted the driver. Simple controls such as mirror adjustment, air conditioning, and more require several steps at the center touch screen and is highly inconvenient and somewhat dangerous. As for Elon Musk being a super hero, this illustrates more of a narcissistic mentality than an real admiration for a man with too much ego and not enough fact based attributes. In other professional evaluations many simple things like hinges, weight of the car, use of crumple zones and other car industry standards for safety and economic advantage are just missed. Technology is what is emphasized in Tesla and not a really great car design. I am not against innovation, but clearly other car companies are taking on the EV trade in a more safe and serious fashion and this shouldn't be missed by consumers.

They need to get the instrumentation directly in front of the driver to make it more safe when looking for your speed especially! It’s just common sense especially in a quick car. I wonder how many people have had accidents by looking at the centre tablet for information instead of keeping their eye on the road directly in front of them! Like I’ve said before, normal safer cars have instrumentation directly in front of them.
