With powerful words and pictures Georgia Lyon chronicles her journey figuring out how to read facial expressions, how to make friends, how to juggle all the social cues that make school feel like a complicated maze. For those wondering what it's like inside an autistic child's head, Georgia provides amazing insight and understanding.

So grateful that I can call this amazing, confident, and articulate girl one of my best friends. She is just as wonderful in her daily interactions as she is in this interview! I'm so proud of all that you have accomplished, Georgia, and can't wait to see where life takes you!

Georgia's parents must be, quite rightly, very proud. This is an inspiring insight into a widely misunderstood condition.

But autistic people shouldn't have to expend all their energy trying to be like neurotypicals. It would be nice if they were just allowed to be themselves. This idea that you have to "pass" is very flawed.

Everyone is confronted with a challenge, be it physical, mental, psychological, spiritual, intellectual,monetary, verbal, sexual,emotional,social etc. Some are more severe than others. But hey, we all have to march along & learn as you go along.

Good talk! I just saw this today and realized that it’s a few years old - as she was getting ready to attend college. It would great if the organizer can invite her back for a follow-up conversation. I hope she is doing well.

Thank y'all so much for sharing your perspectives. Hearing others speak has been really helpful in identifying traits in myself that have convinced me that it's time to get tested. I never realized I could possibly have aspergers until new data was studied and many more people began sharing their experiences. With more exposure to information like this, I'm finding many resources that are helping me with issues I've struggled with my whole life but never realized there was already so much support for.

always remember therapy is basekly beang able to see things in a new light. an example to that is: when I was a kid I wase wery drawn to observing many things and especialy other people. I had spesefic forms of comunication disability and I strugled to speek in a corectly way, but I becam better afterwards, I learnd to observe and study paterns of people more deeply from my mom I then wanted to see how other people talked so I studied how they used theyr paterns celebritis paterns, saw how the presidents, youtubers, political figures talked and spoke, I then noticed that when I moved down deeper in the comunication paterns I noticed my own paterns began to be more sharpened and refined and began to becom more like a political talker than normal and my family noticed that I was good at talking, almost to good, the reson for that was I talked to mutch and everyone arond me got tired of me, that is why I becom so good at it. keep one praticing people.

This was great. I'm wired up like her. Except my moral compass got messed up from addictions mostly brought about because I went undiagnosed for close to 4 decades. Lot's and lots of trauma, frustration, confusion and heartbreak. Look out for the younger generation so they can get their needs addressed.....my family had their heads in the sand.

Was diagnosed with adhd at 7 but nothing was dealt with....didn't even know I was diagnosed until I was way older and my life had already gone to shit. High I.Q. means nothing if you're in the wrong environment and don't understand your hardware.

I also have to look at people to know what they are saying ... the extra stimulation in face to face situations require that.

You and me both. I wore a very good mask for over 3 decades. I thought autism was fucking rain man. Didn't know it was the reason why my senses were always through the roof. Leading to horrible coping mechanisms. Oh well. You live and learn.
@mrfake675
@mrfake675 Рік тому
Senses through the roof and avoiding situations because my emotions are through the roof. Like a psychic sponge. Takes me a long time to process. People who don't respect the process are human kryptonite....didn't know that was an autistic feature
@mrfake675

I scored a super high i.q. as a child but once high school hit the heightened senses destroyed me. I couldn't learn effectively. Had panic attacks every school day for close to 4 years. Didn't tell anyone. Had to wear the mask of a man who couldn't express vulnerability....couldn't have been so much better. Oh well....hope you're life can start going smoother.

Would things like not standing high pitch sounds, or loud sounds of any sort, such as laughter (specially children's laughter and crying), whistling, improv jazz, not knowing which sound to "follow", among many, at any given time, or needing to identify where they come from, being able to "hear" barometric pressure changes and getting sick from them, (pulsating headache or vomiting) be qualified as auditory sensory overload? Can having problems with lots of things moving around in unpredictable manners, (people in a crowd, but, most concerning, cars in a multilane highway- not being able to trust or anticipate what the ones behind will do, or struggling with the intense moving lights at night coming from all directions, be considered visual overload? Is being exhausted after driving 60 km or one hour in such conditions a tell-tale sign of such overload? Is having to sit in a particular place in a restaurant, with the back or the side against the wall or corner, facing the window, in order to be able to relax, not being able to go to public swimming pools with children moving in all directions, sensory overload? And can sensory overload be a symptom in other pathologies that are not autism? Asking about a friend of a friend, of course.

Sure sounds like it. I recommend ear plugs. Or ear buds with nature sounds or whatever sounds soothe your system.
@mrfake675
@mrfake675 Рік тому
If I'm in a public bus with a friend ill have one ear bud with nature sounds on. Just that relaxing input keeps my brain from getting overwhelmed....if I can't do that I focus on my hands or do a body scan with deep breathes

If you plan on being employed in the NT world, especially sales, then you better learn NT "language", otherwise be a peaceful hermit. 7 decades being Autistic taught me that my assessment of situations in tight stressful extreme circumstances (many were mine) was usually the most cool rational life saving judgements! We Autistics were bred long ago in distant places as warrior tradesmen, where rational focused unemotionally applied mentality served a real world function, lost today sadly as society baby sits us into a shunned minimized obscurity. Artificial intelligence made man extinct when the industrial revolution started killing crafts trades and warrior ethic. Look about you, see robotic poor excuses for humans filling their useless time having social "fun".

Are Aspies attracted to others of the opposite sex? Do they get on better in a relationship than the others who do not have Asperger's?
@marthamryglod291
@marthamryglod291 Рік тому
There's good data to support that. Aspies communicate just fine with other aspies and are broadly nonjudgmental.
@mrfake675
@mrfake675 Рік тому
If an aspie is undiagnosed and doesn't know what's going on, relationships can be hell. Happened to me and my ex. We were both undiagnosed autistic. We ended up being very hard on eachother. She was much worse to me as the strong male stereotype couldn't be met when my brain needed a recharge.

A young adult family member has not wanted to accept the word autism. So they are not yet in therapy..they are a big " sink into the wall " kind of person. You and others that I see articulate and speak more confidently. Did you have to work on that for awhile to get to where you are? I have hope that they will develop more confidence now that they are willing to go through testing and support.

10,000 hours for a neuro-typcal. Anybody care to comment how many hours for a neuro-diverse ?
@EnricoBianco
@EnricoBianco 8 років тому
DavidAKZ No reason to think it isn't the same number of hours but keep in mind a few things: that number is a rough average, it's for attaining "world-class" skill, and those 10,000 hours are not just mindless repetition but actually deliberate practice.
