well...i mean, doesnt really make sense. if text to video like Sora get perfected, joel could technically do all 12 movies in prob under a month if thats what he wanted to do. A.i. is a tool, much like a camera and if AGI is perfected we could just tell the AI to make 12 movies. So, I think it could easily replace many human endeavors. Humans and Ais are like comparing humans to aliens. you cant compare.
@VapeKidJr
@VapeKidJr Місяць тому
Okay but that doesn’t contradict what OP is saying. That would still require Joel. If you just told ai to write and make the movie it would be sludge with no human element. Plus even if Joel wrote and had ai do visuals that wouldn’t make a Joel Haver movie either. Joel’s movies lean into improv and a lot of what they find for the storytelling comes from human interactions on the day of the shoot and an AI would fail to reproduce that. So I have to agree ai can’t replace joel

There's another aspect to the long take, almost opposite to the tension you were perhaps going for, that I felt was really on display in this movie. For me a long take evokes an intimacy with the performers and crew -- I grew up with theatre (my dad was really into it) and this kind of thing feels a lot like watching a great stage production from the front row. There's certainly a thrill to it, because everyone has to be on-point in real time from start to finish, but I wouldn't call it anxiety. Great movie, at any rate.
@LaraBartel

It's funny that 40 something minutes feels like a totally reasonable time to me for a project since I'm used to thinking about music and albums more than filmmaking. It's interesting thinking about time scales like that because it gets you thinking about attention spans. 20ish minutes is a good unit of attention span and so like a short or tv show is one unit, and album is two, and a feature would be many stacked together
@2curlicue4u

For sure and a lot of albums kind of interstitial songs to bridge the sections or literally have a and b sides. I wonder if there's an industry screenplay formula but for albums

I enjoyed 'The Text' a LOT more than 'Anyone Else But Me' because it really doesn't feel like a moment was wasted in the film, with a solid story and more interesting characters as well. I loved the use of one take, the aspect ratio, and the film feeling like a play in this sort of a format.

They're close. I think I prefer Anyone Else But Me because it's just more satisfying as a story, more time and more scenes means more space to develop all those characters and narratives. It also just had some downright incredible scenes like the one where the class is reenacting Darren's outburst with all the roles swapped around, just brilliant in concept and execution. I did really like this month's movie though and it's more technically impressive that they were able to pull this off in only three takes. Going to be hard to top either of them but starting off the year this strong is making me really excited for the other nine movies.

This film was incredible. the way you were able to tackle such painful taboos so organically made this truly special. The way of portraying the talented musician who doesn't get the appreciation he deserves so he doesn't see the value in his talent like he should, the uppity tinder date who is living in the moment & not thinking about how or why she is there with those people, the guy just turning 30 thinking his entire life is over. Dax's overwhelming anxiety making it feel impossible to understand him., & Trent's go lucky attitude & living a "successful" life. You have been releasing my favorite works from you this year keep doing your thing Joel!

extra impressive with the formal constraint of the one-take is how effortless and naturalistic it feels in this film. totally not distracting and in fact fades into the background completely once you get to know the characters and become invested in the story. yet it’s always working subconsciously to heighten the anxiety and immersion. awesome work!

I'll be honest just having spent about 3 months planning a 6 minute short film, which will be shot across 2 days, I went into your film thinking it would be pretty bad. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it despite the glaring flaws. I could tell you really did the most within the limitations and I found the framing of the characters at several points to be somewhat cinematic. Pretty impressive for what was effectively improvised. I think it could have benefited from some kind of camera stabilization like a gimbal, steadicam, or even just a lens with a built in stabilizer. The shakiness was a bit distracting at times.

Thank you so much for this. I have always wanted to participate in the Oscar tradition but didn't have the ability to really do it (despite putting the event in my calendar two months in advance). Music is more my thing so instead, i got off work an hour early to make "an album during the Oscars" the goal was 45+ minutes of music. I only ended up with about 17 minutes of finished songs but I livestreamed the whole thing to all four of my friends who decided to tune in. I followed through and put that album out which is something I rarely do. Long story short, even if I didn't follow the prompt, this inspired me to spend three hours doing something I love, sharing it with people I love and pushing myself to be proud of my imperfect art. Thank you so much ❤️

I loved The Text, I’ve become more interested in art that seeks to not look at someone’s life and ordering it into a beginning middle and end and rather looks at a specific moment in someone’s life, still having themes but primarily just focus on a real moment and I think movies shot in one shot have such a great ability to do that, I will say some issues though. The piano was too loud, some lines seemed like they could of been cleaned up maybe but other areas felt like they needed more talking, I think most of these were deliberate artistic decisions as I think your style is very focused on awkwardness but some parts I just couldn’t quote vibe with. The cinematography was also a step up from some of your earlier stuff (that I’ve seen, I still plan on seeing Anyone Else But Me) a lot of genuinely beautiful moments where the camera stood still and we could soak in the colors and decor. That’s it, I love your writing style and for a movie made in 2-3 days this is probably the best case scenario 9/10 keep doing what your doing

"The Text" to me is something interesting, that someone like Joel and his crew could accomplish first, is the fact that even though there's comedic elements to this, this is to me encompasses the ticking time bomb in a small, intimate story. I saw the comedic elements, but I felt the anxiety more so. This felt like something the Safdies would've produced, would've backed. It made me sit on the edge of my seat just like Uncut Gems. Mostly because I was in a similar situation in different times, both as an observer and in the middle of it. I was filled with dread, I was rooting for everyone while also being disappointed in everyones reaction and how they handled the situation. I've been in that, I was cringing at it. I lost friendships because I either was complacent or was part of the problem. Part of me wishes I could go back and fix things, had people who even though I made a small mistake like that, would still be by my side, but no. Real life isn't like that. And this is real life. People are petty, people panic, people struggle, people are in love, people care for one another, people are people. All we can do is grow and learn and hopefully help someone when they're in a similar place. Again, thanks to the cast and crew for making this film. And thank you "The Oscars 2024" for letting Joel have a time where everyone can create the best thing they can in such a short amount of time!
