I’ve had my 2020 Gladiator Rubicon since November 2019 and it has been a fun truck to own. Bought it new and it’s been a good truck. Not for those that keep trying to compare them to a weekend garden truck or F150. It’s a lifestyle truck for those that wanted a convertible, but live in winter 8 months out of the year and wanted a truck. I don’t care about depreciation because I’m never selling it.

This is a common problem for many brands, they over ordered when the market was HOT but delivery of stock was delayed due to chip shortage and ect. Now all this inventory is hitting the lots AFTER the rates have increased and people are spending less as the recession starts hitting hard. Many dealers might not survive this just like back in 2008

Let them fail. I couldn't care one bit. They were ripping customers off ALL year and only now are they worried about sales numbers. Ford Mavericks are marked up $5K in my state and dealers keep inventory VERY low to pump up the price. Every single stealership I visited had only 2-3 Mavericks on the lot but a trillion F-series trucks and all of those were marked up $9-10K. They will never make even 2/3 of their expected sales numbers for the year.

Yup and it's all the salesmen's faults, they ripped people off during Covid and now that the crisis is over customers realized they got scammed. My mom works in the office for a Ford dealer and they were selling trucks at 5-10k over MSRP during Covid, now their top salesman is barely selling 10 cars a month at one of the highest volume Ford dealers in the country... couldn't care less coming from a mechanic we all hate salesmen.

I bought one recently, but opted for a used 2021 for a couple of reasons: 1. Many of the ‘22s on the lot are missing random features due to supply chain issues, 2. Many of the ‘23s are now not including random things (probably due to cost-cutting) but the price was not adjusted down accordingly, and 3. The price has gone up so much that it’s ridiculous now. I understand inflation and all that, but when I priced out everything I was looking for, the cost of a ‘23 would have been $67K, which is getting into ridiculous territory for a mid-sized truck even if it is a cool Jeep. Instead, the used ‘21 had about 13,000 miles on it and had every single option I was looking for, including the safety packages.

@@janjans0001 These prices, both here and there, are beyond ridiculous. I'm done, I have always had new vehicles, but I can no longer justify the cost. Not that I cannot afford one, but it is now down to the actual cost benefit. In my mind, a new vehicle no longer makes sense to simply get from point A to point B. I have the pleasure of visiting many of these auto plants, been in most of them over the years, pick your brand. I see the decline in parts quality, the price cutting, the lack of pride in the folks building the cars, the offshoring of the engineering and the fact that much of the industry is more about politics and wokeness then building a quality product. When I turned in my Chevy Silverado I took pause, and looked at what I was getting for the money and said no more. I went and found a very nice older Buick Park Avenue, paid $2000 cash for it and replaced a few wear items and did a bit of engine work, easy stuff which I did myself. The parts are inexpensive, readily available and the vehicle is pretty simple in regards to the systems. The lockdown changed my thinking on many things in regards to finances. And I bet they do it again.

Here in the Midwest, the Gladiators are not a rare sighting, quite a few on the road and most dealerships have few if any (although for pick-ups, Chevy, Ford and Toyota dominate). The Toyota pick-ups, particularly the Tacoma, is still considered the "farm friendly" option for reliability, and the prices are $20K below the option-filled, convenience packages in other domestic pick-ups. But I do so like the Gladiators more than our 2014 Wrangler Sahara. The prices are still high here with rebates of about $3K on 2022 Mohave.

I love my 2022 gladiator rubicon eco-diesel. Had it for 7 months and I go wheeling quite often . Iv'e had to help out people in deep ruts and obstacles when I drove through right after them with no problems. I carry equipment for different things that I couldn't fit in wrangler. It's an all around vehicle and i still get 25mpg with my 35" tires and mopar lift and it's plenty of clearance for most trails. Plenty of diesel torque when going over big rocks as well. I might even go with 3.5" lift and 37s later. It's hard to match the off-road rock-crawling capabilities of front & rear axles, electronic sway bar disconnect, front & rear lockers with any other stock truck in the similar category. It's an awesome truck if you use it for what it was designed for. Definitely not for just driving on flat roads and speed bump crawling at the mall. If you're looking for one, just go for the rubicon or the mojave and never look back.

Because you can do a lift kit with adjustable shocks later for pre running to a Rubicon and you got the best of both

One thing that few people cover, is how amazing of a tow vehicle the Gladiator with the EcoDiesel for middle weight loads. Sub 8,500 lbs it's better then any full size. It's a 1000 lbs lighter, so it accelerates better, and gets noticeably better fuel mileage when towing then any full-size could manage. It's far more maneuverable due to it's smaller size, that's also a huge benefit to for towing. The steering ratio being higher, designed to let you make tiny adjustments when offroading, also makes it a breeze to line up to the hitch, as well as need to squeeze through tough spots (like when idiots double parking on the street you are driving down) .I went down from a Full-size Truck on purpose to a Gladiator because I know I am not towing above 8,000 and the full size trucks are a pain to park, a pain to maneuver around a parking lot etc. The Jeeps lower weight also means you get far better fuel mileage for the town and city when you're not towing. However, on the highway, well it's shaped like a brick, but towing on the highway it's still leaps and bounds better fuel mileage then any full-size truck. I recently got 17-18 MPG when towing a 23 ft open car trailer, with a 5,000 lb EV on it. Stellantis is trying to retire the EcoDiesel, so I am sure this is why these merits are ignored. As far as missing features, mine is a 2022, I ordered it and didn't have to compromise on anything.

As a Ford fan thanks to my dad, I didn't get into the Jeep thing during the 70's & 80's as a kid. Probably because wanted to be a purist & to emulate my dad. Dad wasn't into them either even though he was around them during WWII. In 2008 or so I had a friend who had a 1994 Wrangler Sahara, it had a manual transmission & decided to drive it to work while I was babysitting her dogs. It rode rough, bounced all over the road, stiff as a board; rode like a hay wagon.... LOVED IT! That morning I realized why there was a following for these. It opened my eyes how fun these were. I recall Chrysler decided to bring back the round headlights on the 1996 which I think was a wise decision; Jeep's don't have square headlights. My input on the Gladiator is it looks cool, something different & when they came out, I was finally seeing Jeeps were expanding their lineup. One thing though, what hurts the model is they didn't offer a two-door option & bring back the Scrambler. You get a Jeep pick-up with a bit longer bed. Not everyone wants a four-door pick-up they still like regular cab pick-ups. If I was in the market for a Wrangler, I would never buy a four-door I think it's sacrilegious to have a four-door Wrangler, Still don't know why there's an interest in them. Also, what's hurting them is the cost. 64,000+ for a Jeep pick-up?!?! Ridiculious! In general, ALL trucks from all brands are getting too expensive. Who today has the funds to put 20% down on a new vehicle & pay 700-1000+ a month payment. All manufacturers are pushing leases these days cause they look cheaper, yet you don't OWN it. I agree they need to add a V8 option to these. Maybe they don't because of the CAFE standard BS. If they have too many vehicles with low MPG, they can get nailed with a gas guzzler tax on them.

It has the best pull ratings of its class in mid size trucks. That’s one thing that was surprising people. Now you have several options if you want upgrade motors. Tell me, in the truck world how many trucks have a choice by which you can find many auto shops…you can go from V6 to with supercharger, diesel, Hemi with 4-5 options all the way up to helliphant options?

If you want a rough off-road rig, you buy a Jeep. The Gladiator isn’t limited by its engine, it’s limited by its size and weight and that’s a great thing off road. The gladiator already has more HP and Torque than most full size trucks from the early 2000’s that had much higher tow and haul ratings.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The gladiator isn't a bad truck. But it was built to appeal to the wrong market. Wrangler fans have mostly stuck with the wrangler. Most people who had an interest in gladiator were interested in a midsize pickup. Dodge left a huge hole in that market by discontinuing the Dakota, and the gladiator is just too niche to fill that space. A lot of pickup truck buyers shop by numbers. Especially those looking for a work truck. Gladiator is priced in league with half ton trucks. That's a market it simply wasn't built to compete in. Discounts like this video mentions are a useful tool to close the sale, but there are two major problems. First the high MSRP decreased the amount of people showing up at the lot in the first place. Can't close a sale that hasn't opened. Second, deep discounts on new product drive depreciation. So yeah, what you did was the most predictable result. Either stick with the brand you like, but get a more capable truck cheaper than the gladiator, or if it must be midsize, buy from a competitor.

Thanks for covering this. I agree on the powertrain holding it back for a long time. I love the 3.6L in my 2014 Rubicon Wrangler, but it only makes its power when you hit high RPM's and it sounds REALLY unhappy at those high RPM's. When they finally offered the diesel option, their timing was terrible (because they finally made my dream truck and I was too borke to buy it at the time.) Then a couple of things happened: 1) Stories of problems with the eco diesel were coming around in large numbers (why the holy heck did they not use a Cummins engine instead of that for their light duty line-up) 2) I got one for a work road trip and found the seating position was horrible! I am admittedly built pretty odd (6 feet tall, but with a really tall body and relatively short arms and legs), but I just could not get enough room between me and the wheel to feel good for a long trip and my head was poking through the "roll cage". I read some companies actually make aftermarket seat brackets to try to address some of these issues, so I know its not just me. Even with those issues, I still would rush our an buy one (and just get a LONG term extended warranty and aftermarket seat brackets) if only I was not already paying for 2 other new Jeeps for my family. I also heard they were planning to stop production of eco diesel equipped ones at the end of last year, but am not sure if that actually happened? I am kind of surprised that Daimler Benze ->Fiat Chrysler -> Stellantis never tried a factory supercharged Pentastar for Jeep and Dodge/Ram trucks. My thought is that instead of wasting money on the run/stop, they could have taken the 3.2L version of it they developed for the China market (the one used in the Cherokee for a while) and added a supercharger and anything that would require for durability and BOOM, better gas mileage and gobs of low-end torque.

They use the EcoDiesel engine because it's made by a Stellantis subsidiary. The diesel engine they should've used is the Cummins R2.8. I don't know if that would've required a heavy financial investment in safety testing and so forth, though. They obviously already have a strong business relationship with Cummins. However, I'm sure the choice was ultimately made by the bean counters.

Ben, informative video. Thank you. I will be purchasing a pickup truck at the end of 2024 to tow our Casita camper (only weighs 2900 lbs). My primary need for a truck is to tow our camper 6,000 or more miles per year. We don’t really off road beyond forest service roads. We are still debating a mid-size truck (prefer the size) to the 1/2 ton truck (more function for only 5% to 15% more money with the exception of the Gladiator that cost as much or more than the types of 1/2 ton trucks I would be buying). HOWEVER, I learned to drive at age 14 on our 90 acre farm using my dad’s 1968 Jeep J10 full-size Gladiator pickup truck. My dad used it to haul diesel fuel, chain saws, and logging equipment into the woods. I don’t need a Jeep Gladiator. The Jeep Gladiator has solid tow capabilities and payload specs relative to other midsize trucks, but it is not the best mid-size truck for towing duties and it costs way more and you have to put up with its idiosyncrasies. BUT, I have never owned a Jeep despite driving dad’s Jeep J-10 as a teenager, so I want one despite not needing one. YET, I am 60 years old; LOL, maybe better to buy the Gladiator (umm, a Jeep) in 2024 rather than in 10 more years or more! I would be willing to put up with its shortcomings with the exception of two things: 1. Price - I will not pay a premium for a midsize truck that costs more than some full-size trucks that includes its functional shortcomings relative to other mid-size trucks in terms of towing and hauling. But, if Gladiator is being heavily discounted, count me in and it will be on my short-list. 2. Reliability - if ain’t reliable, I don’t want it. Period. Historically, I would not consider the GMC/Chevrolet Canyon/Colorado due to their poor reliability. However, the new 2023s are impressive. I will watch and research this year and next year before purchasing in late Fall of 2024. I will purchase on the basis of price, reliability, safety, and function. If Gladiators are price competitive relative to other midsize trucks, I will seriously consider one with the assumption that it must be reasonably reliable! ;)

I'm surprised to hear they're not selling. I see a ton of them in NJ although I'm in a pretty densely populated area.

I got mine in December 2021 mine sat on the lot for 3 months, I noticed people started buying after major deals in 2022. I was literally one of the few gladiators on the road now more people have them

So many people clamored for a rebirth of a Jeep pickup, but the Gladiator is nothing like the Comanche. I agree stuffing a Hemi in would help. Doing a hellcat or 392 would really help imo, but my issue with the Gladiator is the lack of a 2 door model. Yes, 2 door trucks don't sell as well, but this is a lifestyle vehicle, and the die hards have been asking for it. Jeep has even teased the idea. So 2 fewer doors, and a better departure angle, and I think it would do well with the right crowd. The Gladiator as is is just too long for the trail and looks off proportionally. Shortening it up I think would add a lot of appeal.

Gladiator purchase was simple. The only mid-size truck thats diesel, solid axles, and removable top doors. Nothing else compares. I’ve daily driven mine for 75k and not one issue, only smiles. Works as a functional truck and fun vehicle.

Ben you hit the nail 100% on the head I’ve been saying this from day 1 the boring inadequate pentastar is what is wrong with the gladiator besides it’s ridiculous price!! I priced a Mohave this morning on the online builder and it came out to $75k!!! Lots of other options out there for $75k that have real powertrains. I hope Jeep is listening!!

There is no way a Mojave was that much. You can order through a jeep dealer and a loaded Mojave will come out under 55k.

My Gladiator is awesome! Got it at 8% below invoice in '21. Picked up my wifes GC Summit Reserve for 6% below invoice in Jun of '22. Both superb vehicles.

I talked with that dealer and he basically told me the gladiator has a lot of rebates and is a great off road truck I traded in my Ford explorer for the diesel gladiator I paid 10k under msrp and got 12k trade in for mine...

I don’t know about anyone else, but if they had a single cab I’d definitely be interested in getting one. I don’t need a crew cab in my day-to-day life. That would also make its break-over angle closer to the Wrangler’s. I’d also be interested if they dropped a hemi attached to a manual transmission in said single cab.

Overpriced and unreliable. People that want a midsize truck are going to buy Toyota,Honda, and Nissan. Jeep is at the BOTTOM of brand reliability.

A stock Tacoma is not more reliable as an offroader or traveler at all. This is always such a bs comment. The amount of shot you have to do to get it at the same level. Then if you break something is a hassle to fix and find parts. Yea the Tacoma will break.. it's got weak axles. Having owned a newer Tacoma, 2 jeeps and a gladiator now. This drives me nuts when inexperienced people flat out say jeeps are unreliable vs a Toyota. Jeeps are traveling the world. Tacoma needs frame reinforced 😆 to add more weight.

My dad just switched from Toyota trucks to a 2023 Honda ridgeline. Wow what a nice riding truck that is. He don't keep a truck past 10k miles so i couldn't say if any had issues with them.
