I have this combo and love it to death!! I can move it around my place in my home office and plug it to my 4k monitor, i can use it in my VR room and play PCVR, bring it in the living room plug it to my 65 inch Oled Tv when friends and family comes over, or i can just bring the Ally with me when i'm out in about. It's so versatile, but at the same time very very powerful.

I got the 3080 for £900 and although it may seem as expensive but I've been nothing but impressed with it and my ally has replaced my old 1070 AMD gaming pc. Plays most games at 4k 60fps and in handheld 720/1080 30/60fps and been a blast so far

I have the 6850XT mobile and love it. Games run great on the Ally but when I need that extra boost and I am at home the XG Mobile 6850 is great.

Alot of people dont realize ease of use/ compatibility / plug & play also pays into itself for the price other then just doing a direct comparison to. " just get a gaming laptop or desktop " sure i can get a laptop and ill take it to other rooms but slowly and suddenly stop using my ally,i have a monitor i have a keyboard and mouse so just get the black box right?

Thanks for the review. I have been contemplating swapping out my XG Mobile 6850 for the 4090, but now I'm at the point where I want to wait and see what the 2024 model will bring. Currently, the 6850 with Fluid Motion Frames has been great. I have a super ultrawide monitor though... And pushing those pixels is still quite a chore for the 6850.

Why did you say laptop 4090 is more powerful than xg mobile 4090 ? I think its opposite ? Becuase xg mobile has higher TDP (150w ) and i dont think laptop is more than 150 w? Also xg mobile is external . Temp better . Better performance?

Noise and price a deal breaker for me owning the Asus Ally.

Using the xg mobile 4090 with the z1 is a cpu bottle neck at 1080p. I’ve seen tests where fps from 1080p and 4k were the same in certain games.

They should put thunderbolt for it makes it life easier to connect to external graphic card a lot easier and a lot cheaper than XGM because without it it’s gonna be garbage for sure will be terrible performance so that’s why other handhelds are better than the ROG

Can you try DD2 in XG mobile?

I rather prefer the Legion Go with its two USB4 ports. I can plug in my rx6900xt as an egpu and do not need to buy a super expensive ASUS proprietary mobile gpu

Honestly these eGPU are really powerful and have great speed but... Is it worth spending 3 time what you paid for your handheld to play games at better quality? Not only that but you can't use this eGPU with anything other than Asus flow laptop and possibly the Rog Ally 2 when it comes out. If you decide you want to buy a different handheld you will be stuck holding onto this device or trying to sell it... Good luck trying to get anything near what you paid for it. The fact Asus designed the Ally so it is only compatible with their own proprietary eGPU is a joke and is the only reason they can afford to sell the Ally for the price they do. For this reason I'm selling my Ally and going to buy a different brand with Thunderbolt 4 and a reasonably priced eGPU that will work with other products in the future.
