While in a midst of a multi-week prop replica build, Adam takes a break from the long-term project to take on a more relaxing assembly: this intricate 4-cylinder car engine model kit. Made of diecast metal parts, this animated model is an elegant visual representation of how a four stroke engine works, and a nice project to get done in a single day!

It is my understanding that so many people shop exclusively on Amazon that sellers almost have to sell on there to reach as many customers as possible. Amazon charges the seller a premium for inclusion and marketing and shipping so the seller has to mark up the product to match. Basically, the higher price on Amazon is so you can get free shipping.

I think I've seen this same basic engine that has the intake manifold, exhaust header with a turbo charger and even injector nozzles in the manifold and in the right location and it's even complete with an operating ignition system that has tiny led bulbs in the spark plugs that fire (light up) in the proper sequence. I think that the camshafts and valves are a nice touch but the lobe profiles look more like they should have roller followers instead of the "slider" type followers. It might just be me, but it looks a lot like the Cosworth version of the German produced engine that came into the U.S. in Pinto's and Capris until the '74 model year. Now build up the Allison turbo prop aircraft engine that Revell has just reissued for the first time in decades, I'm waiting for them to release the Wright Cyclone engine that was used in several military planes in the '30s and '40s. One of the best known was the Stearman basic trainers that were used to train the majority of pilots during WW II, It was also used for crop dusting and it's still a popular aerobatic aircraft that shows up in a lot of airshows. The engine that was produced by Revell was also used as a display engine in a large 65" wingspan flying model that was produced by the Sterling company that has sadly gone out of business in the last decade or so.

Built the visible V-8 as a kid 55 years ago loved it just as much. It sat with my model collection for many years. Mine had a "working" distributer and "rice grain lights" for the spark plugs. Thanks for bringing back the memories Adam. 👍👍👍😊
@horsepower711
@horsepower711 2 роки тому
Those old Renwal releases were nice but it was strange that you had to lubricate the cylinder bores or the pistons would eventually gall up and seize the engine and it would quit working. Also if you used the wrong lubricant it would make the plastic fog up and it was really hard to see things move. They (Revell have released the "Visible V-8" but it no longer has an electric motor that turns the flywheel and operates the engine. It has a small hand crank that you have to use to rotate the engine and there is no more the little wires and contacts inside the distributor that lit up the little bulbs, but they are another victim of progress. I have heard there are plans to bring back the "Visible Chassis" that was also a Renwal release, it would use the Visible V-8to complete a basic powered chassis, the biggest thing against them was they are such a large scale (1/4?) that it was hard to find a place to display them even though they were popular in automotive auto shop classes in high school and small junior college courses.
@wtmayhew
@wtmayhew Рік тому
@@horsepower711 I was wondering if anyone would mention the Visible V8. I built the Renwal kit probably 50 years ago. It was a quite an amazing kit. I was thinking about re-living the experience, but the new version seems to have deleted some of features of the original such as the electric drive motor, and based on the comments on the seller’s web page the quality may have declined. The kit Adam assembled probably eclipses the old Visible V8, but then this new DIY kit it is quite a bit more expensive. I was just looking at another video about a gasoline powered scale V-twin Knucklehead 4cc engine. Darn, that little engine costs like it it is regular full size engine!

The fact that you have extra nuts and bolts left upon completion truly makes this model assembly just like the real thing. It has always been an inside joke amongst shop coworkers that if you DON'T have extra nuts and bolts left over then you did something wrong, also we don't call them "extras" we call them "weight reduction".

I truly hope you are joking and don't just leave it.
@Georgiaboy9009
@Georgiaboy9009 3 роки тому
@@nathantron Like I said, it is an inside joke. A lot of times one kit will be designed to be compatible with multiple design set ups, which will leave you with parts that were not necessary for your particular application. Other times kits will come with new nuts and bolt but the originals are still in good condition, so you either use the originals and save the new or vice-versa. I, like many auto technicians, have a unique sense of humor that for the most part only fellow "grease monkeys" understand or find humorous, however when it comes to my actual profession I take it very seriously. Joking aside, make no mistake, I consider auto technicians just below doctors; as in my customers are trusting me with not only their safety but the safety of all those around them when they have me work on their vehicles. I perform every repair as if one of my loved ones were going to be driving it.

NOICE! that does look like a lot of fun. When I was a kid I had one of the Revell large scale see-thru 4 cyl. Engine kit and it was so much fun. I (like to think) I learned a bit about engines putting that together. One of my cousins had & built the V8 version around the same time, apparently he tried to rig it to the electrical socket....With expected results. Although I only heard about it after the fact... There is nothing like that moment when you open up a brand new model kit box and start pouring over the parts sprues and instruction book.

Hi Adam, When I was a kid I made a marble puzzle box out of Lego's and it was something fun to do when I was a boy. And then as a adult I made marble puzzle boxes out of Popsicle sticks and it turned out great and the tools I used was a scroll saw and white glue. I made the base using two layers of Popsicle sticks and since the marbles were two sticks in height I used a scroll saw to cut the walls of the puzzle box. And I made four mazes one on top of each other and each maze was different. And when the box was made it was fun playing with it for a while. And the sticks had to be very straight and very flat to make the box work. The way I have found make the sticks flat was to tap them one at a time on a flat surface to weed out the warped and bent ones. You might want to try this project sometime and it maybe fun for anyone who wishes to build one. Robert Johnson

The additional bolt hole studs on the oil filter side of a typical 4 cylinder will be for an engine mount and oil cooler. On the other side you would typically have an engine mount, and sometimes an axel guard or heatshield depending on how it's mounted. Also you would have a crank sensor on the block as well.
