The Intel Core i7-14700K CPU is part of the Raptor Lake Refresh family, and we're reviewing it today. These benchmarks including gaming tests vs. the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, R5 5800X3D, the i7-13700K, and more. We also look at production performance to find the best CPUs for video editing (with Adobe Premiere), Photoshop, 3D modeling & animation, and more, including tests against the AMD 7950X, 7700X, and other CPUs. Our next reviews will look at the Intel Core i9-14900K and Core i5-14600K CPUs from Intel, refreshing their 2023 lineup.

for gaming, AMD v-cache is unbeatable. intel has better productivity usages with those cores.
@saricubra2867
@saricubra2867 6 місяців тому
@@InTecknicolourIt depends, because the brute force of IPC, core count and memory of the i7-12700K (best i7 ever made in a decade IMO) can beat a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It's extremely easy to cool an i7-12700K with air cooling and use PL2=PL1 for infinite tau. For context, a friend uses an AIO for his Ryzen 9 5900X which is a equivalent Ryzen chip (12 cores as well) but is hotter. I was playing the OG Crysis from 2007 giving me 120fps max, the 5800X3D gives the same amount of fps but the lows are worse from gameplay footage i watched (the 5800X3D has the weakness of lower IPC and clocks). For shader compilation, i tried turning my i7-12700K into an 8 core 16 thread chip and it felt sluggish. Once you go 12 core, you don't want to go back to 8 core and below.

@Nelthalin
@Nelthalin 6 місяців тому
I have done some testing with stellaris in the past and I saw good scaling between Ryzen 5000 and 5000X3D especially late game. The X3D parts seemed to fly. I will make a 3.9.3 late game and test the 5600X, 5800X3D and 7800X3D if I see similar results as back in then I will send the same save to Steve. The issue is that you need to test multiple runs of 5/10 min and every run will be slightly different because of events and battles that go different and change the game. But overall I got consistent higher scores on the 7800X3D so the data was useful. (did 4 runs of 10 min looked at the start and end year to see how many years it could calculate in that time instead of benchmarking the time needed for a month or year.) Calculations are different for monthly ticks year changes have other calculations. And you need longer testing for battles to take place. 11th gen was pretty good on Laptops to be honest. The I-7 11800H holds up really well. I Feel like an H variant the 14th gen intel CPU could also be worth it. Especially if it was put in sub 1200 dollar gaming laptops with the 8gb 4060 laptop GPU. That would really play into the strength of 14th gen. Which is the power to get the same performance with slightly less power draw. If you combine that with the 4060, then you'd have an 1080p gaming laptop with lower power draw than other laptops in its class. This would be particularly useful for an smaller gaming laptop with an 13.3 inch screen. For even greater power savings, you could outfit it with an OLED screen. Since entry level gaming laptops aren't expected to last forever. So screen burn in would be slightly less of a concern. I think that an mobile 14th gen chip would really hit its stride in an Ultra book style light and thin gaming laptop. Especially when paired with the efficient 4060 mobile chip. Sell it with 1 tb of memory and 16 gb of DDR5 Ram, and you'll make a killing.

For Stellaris, If you guys really wanna push the CPUs you could try extending the galaxy sizes past the base game limits, this is usually done with a mod and it puts a lot of strain on the game engine, however, it does also allow high L3 cache CPUs to really push forward. For example on a 2500-star galaxy with all DLCs and no other mods apart from the more galaxy sizes, my 5800X3D performs ~30% better than my 5900X and ~35% better than my 5600X. I'm also assuming you guys have experimented with the methodology of the test already, but you could also include a "Days simulated in X minutes from the game start or from a certain save game" for a different perspective on the differences in performance. I will admit I am not knowledgeable on how you guys set up your methodology for testing Stellaris, but I do think there is promise in testing certain Paradox games, especially for high L3 cache CPUs (like Wendell has showcased before). Hope you all have a good day :D

The things that can (and will) break older game saves though are the official update patches, but that can be circumvented by rolling back to an earlier game version under the Properties -> Betas tab in the Steam library.

The 12700 sounds surprisingly like a product designated for greatness. an i9 was never meant to exist in the grand scheme of cpu hierarchy, but that is 2018 mentality I'll admit, but whats a better way to treat your longest standing icon than pushing it away with a new tier supposedly above it being introduced as if its the new high end mainstream? The i9 tier still felt like niche attempted to be put to mainstream category

Same, I was cautiously optimistic when I purchased the 5800x3D back in March for $300 knowing the 14th gen was coming, but at least the 5800x3D will ride me out until the 8xxx series or 15th gen in the least. :)

The flipping intro to this. was priceless as all get out.. Reminded me to the intro awhile back for the OVERPOWER computer.... that was made like a kid with a mallet , some white paste (don't eat that kid) and a tinker toy set.

Thanks for including the i7-4770k , Still using my 4770k to this day, crazy to see a 14700k which uses 284w, i could run 3x 4770k's with that power haha. It's time for an upgrade but it's not gonna be intel that much I know
@Taylor_Fisher
@Taylor_Fisher 6 місяців тому
I switched to a 13700K from a 3770 and it's an amazing leap... Most games gained 80-100 fps with the same GPU. and for what it's worth, it doesn't use that much power most of the time, only when you're maxing out all the cores- which doesn't really happen. Most of the time it uses a lot less power than my 3770 did. When idling it goes actually very low.
@q1337

@@Taylor_Fisher that's nice to hear but with AMD's offering (7800x3d with great performance and 86w power usage) it really doesn't seem that great

@@q1337 Definitely go with 7800x3d. That upgrade is going to feel incredible and should last as long as your 4770k did. Only people who don't know what they are talking about are going to tell you to go Intel right now.

@@willo1345 I don't listen to people, only benchmarks. Im waiting for the 8000 to release so i can snatch the 7800x3d for cheap, it's one hell of a 1st gen AM5 chip

Sheesh, as an early adopter of the 5800x3d I feel more and more validation as new products come out. Im holding out for the 8000 series ryzen chips and it won't be that hard since my old chip is still hanging in there so well.

If I were you I'd just undervolt the cpu and keep the boost clocks so that it uses less power and makes less heat. I undervolted my Ryzen 5 1600 AF from 1.3700V to 1.1187V at the same boost clock of 3.5GHz. My power consumption went from 54-56w to 42-44w and my temps(with a Cooler Master H410R) went from 60C to 44C in a 25C room tempreture and that was on 100% cpu load.

I got mine a little bit after release, it had already proven itself so I wouldn’t consider myself an “early adopter” but I will not be switching for some time, and when I do I’ll be targeting an X800X3D. If I had waited longer to upgrade my CPU I’d have the 7800XT/7800X3D combo now, lol.
