As a former McDonald’s employee, I have some insight on the infamous broken ice cream machine. First is yes, he is completely correct, the ice cream and milkshakes are separate even tho they’re in the same machine. One can be down while the other it working. There are 5 reasons the the machine will go down. 1) it is actually broken. It seems ridiculous bc it is, the machine genuinely breaks all the time for no reason 2) they’ll shut it down for cleaning and maintenance 3) if you go late a night there’s a time when they have to shut it off bc the machine will overheat. Not doing this is sometimes how the whole thing breaks. 4) they run out of flavor syrup/ ice cream mix. The ice cream and milkshakes start as a liquid that could easily be confused for milk if you don’t know what it is. 5) the machine or people will sometimes get overwhelmed by how many orders they get. If it’s too many for the staff to keep up on, they’ll stop serving it. You’re welcome to everyone who wanted to know and thank you to everyone who’s read this far down

This. I was so happy when I worked at McDs and got transferred to a store that didn’t have a milkshake or ice cream machine (this was pre-McCafe items). We occasionally had people throw a fit about us not having milkshakes (like, what do you want us to do? The kitchen is too small to fit one because it’s a really old McDs that hadn’t been remodeled in ages), but most people just said “oh, okay” and went to the McDs down the street.

I went up and asked and they told me the ice cream machine was broken. The guy who had me pay had no idea and was bright red. Apparently he was new. No problem. Felt bad for him cause mistakes do happen when you’re new. I got a refund and told him it’s okay and mistakes happen. Because they are fucking human beings and mistakes happen! I was at Walmart self checkout a couple weeks ago and of course because I bought horror movies, it won't go through without employee authorization. This is why I tend to scan those last. The lady running the self checkout was new, like I think she said it was her first or second day, and she accidentally hit the option saying I wasn't old enough to purchase the movies. This messed up the entire transaction and they had to void it and rescan the receipt then do the movies separately. But as you said, mistakes can happen.

Right? My granddad was a WWII vet and he spoke Spanish. In the town he grew up in, everyone spoke either Spanish or German. His dad and granddad ran the town general store, so he worked in it since he was 4 or 5 and even though his family spoke German, he learned Spanish working in the store and playing with his friends. He didn’t learn English until he went to school. And this was all in the US. It was actually funny when he would work on cars (his favorite hobby), and get frustrated; his frustration came out in a string of mixed German and Spanish cursing.

So I see it as if you do that in front of me then its kn the Karen on how I react cause that's an involuntary reaction to something some else is going and what they're doing is just a dirty thin to do so they deserve me doing that to them. I used to work at McDonalds and I hated that ice cream machine. Those things are so annoying and yes they would break down often and we always had to have the manager call in a tech to fix it. If only you knew how big that manual for that dang machine was, not to mention the fact that trying to understand that thing was like speaking another language. As for the customers in drive thru, yeah, they didn't ever want to have to wait and they would always yell if the ice cream machine wasn't working or if they didn't get enough ketchup or sauce or even ice. I worked their for 3 years and I never want to go back, the best part about that job was the people I worked with and the older regulars who just came in for some coffee, so nice. Honestly, you look gorgeous without makeup!

I was at a Wendy’s and paid for a small choc frosty. Got to the window and the worker said they didn’t have chocolate frosties. She said it would be 10 minutes before I could get one. I asked if I could just have a refund, then, and she said “pull forward and park right there.” I waited 15 minutes and no one came with a refund or frosty, so I called the restaurant (from their own parking lot!) It was pouring rain with lightning and thunder, so I didn’t want to get out of the car to walk inside unless I had to. I was told to come inside. I went in (got soaked in the few feet I had to walk) and heard the worker at the window being scolded by the manager for telling me to pull forward. and then not telling anyone I was waiting there. They were very busy. I waited 5 minutes for someone to ask for the person who called. I explained the situation and I was told it was a misunderstanding because they don’t give refunds. The new worker I was speaking to apologized and went to see if she could get my frosty. I waited 10 more minutes. Then she came and explained that the frosty machine wasn’t working and she’d have to give me a refund. 😂 There was a crowd of unhappy people also waiting around me and some of them were outraged on my behalf and said they should give me a free meal for my trouble. I was just glad to get my money and go. I was there for 35 minutes and went home without a frosty. Frosties are tiny and overpriced now, anyway, so I won’t be going back I didn’t yell or call anyone names, though. What’s the point? The workers weren’t trying to cause me problems. I don’t need to be a problem for them.

I think you are great for being so patient and understanding. When I read through your whole story I thought I'd be very annoyed for such a delay with such a simple order. But here's what I gleaned from your story. The staff person was a new employee. Only knew they don't give refunds. When you went inside the manager was yelling at the staff person and then you witnessed all the back & forth running around etc before they tell her to offer you a refund 🤦🏽‍♀️ Seems to me the manager has a herding cats management style....instead of TRAINING staff on policies, procedures and how to handle certain common situations he prefers to yell at them when they screw up so they learn by trail & error. When I was 16 I worked for someone like this in a bakery- his expectations were astronomical but not a lot of training other than screaming and yelling. Even if the manager you witnessed wasn't loosing his mind on the staffer I've come to the conclusion that a lot of fast food/ restaurant/grocery/ store personnel don't get proper training any more. Leaves the worker feeling like a failure & defensive and discourages customers from ever returning.

Apparently, this is the reason most of McDonald’s ice cream machines are broken. Most food serving restaurants by a specific brand called Taylor. Taylor pretty much makes these things faulty, which means only a Taylor technician can repair the ice cream machine. Standard repair fees cost around $150 within 30 minutes. Plus over $300 for every additional 15 minutes. So if McDonald’s has a machine that can’t be fixed easily, they would rather have it broken for 10 years then pay for repairs.

Amy's Pizza is in my hometown (Hatboro, PA). For quite a while the place was so busy it was hard to get a table and there was a long wait for takeout because the place got so much support for standing up to the Karen (the one who was mad about the TV being on a Spanish channel). When she was probably getting takeout so how long was she really going to be watching it?

The thing about people that are like, “You’re in X country, learn the language!” Is that you know they wouldn’t learn another language if they moved to another country, and they probably don’t even know a second language in the first place. Speaking from experience, even if you know another language, it’s still more comfortable to use your native tongue.
@uselessinformation1988
@uselessinformation1988 9 місяців тому
Just because some people are hypocrites doesn't mean that statement isn't true. Nor does it mean that the idea that you should learn the language of country you're in is inherently racist. What if Mexicans who only speak Spanish suddenly have an emergency but nobody can understand a word they're saying? It's not racist to expect foreigners who come to America to learn English. It's only racist if you expect them to only speak English and give up their native language. It's about a language barrier and communicating. America seems to be the only country where the very idea that foreigners must learn the common language is considered racist. Again, it's only racist if you expect foreigners to speak English all the time and give up their native language. Language barrier, you know. As long the other person can understand you, speak whatever language you want.
@annceres1204
@annceres1204 9 місяців тому
@@uselessinformation1988 I agree. It’s just the people who say the phrase in my above comment (especially in an unkind tone) tend to be ignorant to what it’s like moving to another country that doesn’t speak their native tongue. And tend to not like when people speak their native tongue to other immigrants. I do agree that it isn’t racist to expect people to learn the main language of the country they are living in. Also, for future reference I would use a different language than Spanish as an example since it’s almost a secondary language in the US so it isn’t as strong of an example as say Vietnamese or something.
@uselessinformation1988
@uselessinformation1988 9 місяців тому
@@annceres1204 Spanish was the only thing I could think of at the time, but I did mention Japanese later on in the comment. I didn't mean to single out Spanish. But You're not wrong. I have heard about people who went to a foreign country and got offended that nobody spoke English. What did they expect when they go a country where the common language is not English? And some people seem to believe that foreigners who come to America should give up their native language and speak only English. That lady in the video clip seems like such a person.

The thing with McDonalds ice cream macho is twofold. #1 it literally takes 4-6 hours to clean, and its just easier to say its broken. Also, it only gets cleaned once every two weeks. #2 is that the machines are literally made to fail. If a part wears out or the mix inside goes down it literally locks you out of using it til a tech comes out. The company that makes them has a service monopoly on those machines they make four times in service yearly than do do in sales

Hey Sam, thank you so much for the upload! Your videos are always so very entertaining and your reaction videos are on point. My first job was at McDonald's and let me tell you, that ice cream machine was such a pain in the rear. We did have to clean it out every night and when I got turned back on, it sounded like a dying walrus no joke 🤣🤣. Also, if the store became extremely busy in store and in drive-thru, we would have to "shut down" the ice cream machine unless we had enough staff to manage someone just making the milkshakes or ice cream cones. Trust me, none of the managers nor the employees like that ice cream machine at all. It always had to be fixed because the syrup wouldn't mix with the cream which is why she probably could have gotten a cone and not a milkshake because of the syrup. Also, whatever cools off the cream or keeps the cream cold would not be working and we would have to clear it out and clean it out and replace the part. It was just a frustration in itself and I have always said if you want ice cream don't go to McDonald's because you are in for a disappointment. I would have just went to or even tried calling another place to see if their ice cream machine was working or just go to DQ. There was no reason for this person to go as far as she went. I should pray what I preach because I probably would have been frustrated as well. However, at that point I am too tired to fight with anybody and I really don't want to end up on UKposts or TikTok for being embarrassing or feel like I'm being embarrassing just because I am so critical of how I appear in public anyway so I would hate to draw attention to myself. Basically, McDonald's ice cream machine sucks and go to a different place to get ice cream / milkshakes.

I used to be a shift manager at McDonald’s. The ice cream machines DO break down often. As a former McDonald’s employee, in the UK, our machine really didn’t break often. The only times I had to turn down orders for milkshake or McFlurry’s were when the machine was needing cleaned, but cleaning was usually timed to avoid busy times so it didn’t happen very often. Usually around midnight it was off for a while because the mixes needed changed out and we almost never got milkshake and McFlurry orders then, so it made sense to have it off and put fresh mix and syrups in for the morning (city centre location with no drive thru, so we’d get rushes around 3-4am of those heading home from nights out in the bars, clubs, but that was it). The only time I remember the machine being broken/out of order and it being a big issue was middle of lunch rush on a particularly hot Saturday, lots of disappointed and frustrated people, understandably.

I actually did go off on someone regarding Spanish when I was working at Pizza Hut when I was a teenager. I noticed that the announcements on the board started showing up in Spanish and in English. And I had absolutely no problem with that because some people in our store spoke Spanish. Then I started noticing that the announcements in the English started getting smaller and put off to the side more so you had to actually read the entire bulletin board to make sure you weren't missing anything that was mandatory. One day I get called into the office and get yelled at because I missed a mandatory meeting that was on my day off. I had no idea this meeting was taking place. I was told if it ever happened again I would be fired on the spot. So I went to the board and I couldn't find the announcement that there was a mandatory meeting let alone that I missed one. So I go back and ask where the announcement was. He pointed on the board to a piece of paper in Spanish. Nowhere on the board was it announced in English. In fact looking at the board I noticed nothing was an English anymore. I made it very clear to my manager that if he was to give me any sort of punishment let alone fire me at any point in time that I would sue and own that particular franchise. I then told him that last time I checked we were still in the United States and I had no problem with the bulletin board announcements being in Spanish and English because I realized that most of the store did speak Spanish. However I and there were few others that only spoke English they couldn't expect anyone to read the bulletin board and follow it if it was not an English at some point

I would love if you acted this out: one time i was working at a cashier at mcdonalds and a guy started conplaining about how we sometimes charge for extra sauces. Granted, this is inevitable if you input it into the system as its automatic charges. It was just him and his wife and he only got a 4 piece nugget for them to share before sitting in the lobby. He then later came up to ask for extra sauces and because at this I had to charge .25 cents for the sauce. He then accused me of jacking up the prices on his meal and on the sauces and told me i must be stuffing my own pockets. Honestly i was so bewildered. I have absolutely no power to change prices as i was just a regular employee. I don't like that we sometimes charge for sauces either. For one, it needs to be consistent (which it never was) and for us it really depended which manager was on shift. I just think in general, we shouldnt charge extra for them, but instead just have a limit on how many extras is too much. But of course i dont get to make those decisions.
