This is not that abnormal if she's her store's security, I've seen case where they will literally snatch your purse or backpack off you and dump the shit on the ground, like if she actually stole it then maybe, maybe not, who knows. Maybe holding onto her is... um... a no but grabbing their shit is fine imo although it's a shirt so it's a bit different. Obv in this case, it's likely a case of racism but in a normal scenario, I've seen plenty of times and done plenty of times where we (and security in general) will forcefully take the item out of your hands.

Imagine Mr. Smith and family books a hotel room. Mr. Doe knows they did, shows up at 3pm and says they are here for their room booked under the name Smith. They get keys to the room. Mr. Doe can now do anything he wants in the room, and the hotel has no way to track him down for damages. Mr. Smith arrives at 9pm and gets the night shift front desk staff. They see he seems to already be checked in. The confirmation number matches and everything. The young, idealistic staff member who has this shift because they don't have seniority thinks it's just a glitch, voids the old keys to the room, and sends Mr. Smith up. Mr. Doe is in the room. Maybe he has bad intentions, maybe he just smeared peanut butter on everything and left to be an agent of chaos. Maybe Mr. Smith is deathly allergic to peanuts. This can get dark fast.

When I worked at Ross on the stock team during the Christmas season, this woman came up to me and started ranting about how another customer had a service animal. She told me to go to the customer and tell her to leave, because "having animals in a store is illegal." When I didn't do anything after five minutes, she came back over to me and tore into me. She took my name down and actually called corporate to report me. Obviously, I didn't get into trouble. The worst part was how scared I was because she was just so angry and confrontational. She even called me stupid and useless, and I was just thinking "I've been here 5.5 years and I still haven't gotten a raise after dealing with bullshit like this."

I've worked in customer service for a year. In that year I worked two jobs. And at each job I have been told do not, under any circumstances try to apprehend or confront someone you suspect of stealing. At the end of the day, unless you are LP it is not your job. Furthermore, you have no idea if that person really is stealing. If they aren't, you and your manager are gonna look bad. To top it all off, it's a liability. You don't know who you're confronting. You don't know if they're stable or dangerous, you don't know if they have a weapon on them. You interfering with a customer for a $12 shirt is not worth your safety and the safety of those around you. Also, who in their right mind just puts their hand on another human being? (I'm not saying the woman in the video was stealing, just saying what I've learned.)

That video was ridiculous and if that lady had been me, that employee woulda woke up wondering why she was laying in the floor. @kaylapounds1359

In management you are allowed to tell people to leave and if you catch them stealing you can tell them they are banned and if they return, they will be trespassed. I'm sick to death if thieves. There was a lady we had who kept stealing, but we couldn't catch her until after it happened. One day she came in and I watched her on camera put a butter dish in her purse. When she went to leave I said, "We're you gonna get that butter dish?" She pretended like she forgot she put it there and took it out. This notion of not saying anything is ridiculous. Imo is corporates excuse to avoid liability if on the rare chance the thieves have weapons, and to have excuses to increase prices on goods. Employees should be allowed tasers to stop thieves. Or they need to invent smart technology that can detect theft like scanning to see if they have new items they have and didn't pay for.
@thatguycalledphil6808
@thatguycalledphil6808 9 місяців тому
@@kaylapounds1359strictly speaking different retail companies, in my experience, allow you to do something but actual physical confrontation is discouraged. Your experiences are a good example. Anti theft technology sounds nice, it loses plausibility though when it would require corporate to make the effort.

If they are not doing something that is relating to their job and meeting of fans, then they are off the clock and leave them alone, especially if they are eating out or whatnot with friends. If you feel the need to approach, then just be polite, say Hi and let them know you love and support them. If they are receptive to autographs or pics, go for it. If not, let them be. I have been told this is uncommon, however, my mom taught me to tip everyone in the food industry even fast food. My mom said it was especially important to tip people in fast food because people get treated very poorly by customers and that a lot of people that work there are struggling to make ends meet. Every time I got through the drive through I don’t care if it’s McD’s, Taco Bell or any other fast food place I will always give them at least a dollar because it will always make them smile. My mom also told me if you can’t afford to tip you can’t afford to go out to eat. Some people may disagree with these and that’s okay it’s just how I was raised and how I taught my kids. I will leave you with this thought… if you tip your barista a Starbucks for your coffee why not tip at McD’s drive through.

While I love to make people happy, customer service can definitely be hard. I really related to the hotel situation with the id. I had an experience where I worked in a daycare, and the father of the child refused to get his id that he left in his car. We have to make sure that a person has the authority to sign out their child, regardless of the relationship, because we don't want to send the child with someone they're not allowed to go with. He yelled at me, said I was just the help, and asked for my info to report me for attempted kidnapping. Long story short, he was dealt with and didn't bother us again. Definitely my scariest customer service experience. Moral of the story: be nice, and treat others with respect❤

Love all your videos! And especially how you try to stay as unbiased as possible and open minded. I will say in the case of the publix sandwich ordeal, as someone who’s worked there, what immediately jumped to my mind is that in the deli they have to wear multiple sets of gloves. It’s usually more heavy duty work gloves under the regular plastic ones, so I’m thinking she might have been referring to the more heavy gloves under the plastic ones. At least in my mind that would make more sense. Especially sense there are usually plenty of boxes of the plastics ones everywhere in case they rip or something, but the underlying work gloves are usually bought by the employee meaning they probably can’t change those ones.

This may vary by state, but the Fair Labor Standards Act doesn’t allow tips to be pooled with back of the house workers unless you’re paid a full minimum wage, and your employer doesn’t take the tip credit. If they pay you $2.13 an hour, they cannot require you to share tips with cooks or dishwashers, but I do believe it’s okay for servers and bartenders to pool tips. Managers cannot ever participate in the tip pool, however.

Considering a sandwich maker would have been touching pretty much everything with the same gloves throughout the day, if someone is THAT worried about cross contamination of allergens, it's already too late by then and changing the gloves really won't make much of a difference because everything has already been touched by the same hands all day. Like you touch meat and then cheese, meat particles are now in contact with the cheese. Touch cheese and then various toppings, cheese particles are now in contact with all those toppings. And it's a constant repeating cycle all day. Nothing is safe and if the allergies are really THAT bad they shouldn't be there in the first place.

For the shoplifting story, if the shopper was witnessed committing a crime (selecting the item and leaving the store) by section 494 of the Canadian criminal code they can conduct a citizen’s arrest including physically arresting the person committing a crime. Security in that circumstance would be to keep the situation from becoming dangerous unless they represent the store. That employee didn’t seem to witness anything, though, so they aren’t protected by the criminal code…the customer had their section 8 charter rights against unreasonable search and seizure violated before the employee ever laid hands on the customer, though…unfortunately, since Stephanie arrested the customer, security had to wait for the police to get there and just minimize the physical risk. As for filming, we really need law to catch up with technology. I’ve been helping someone having a severe mental health episode and been unable to help them properly because they were distracted by screaming at the person filming them and begging them to stop…the person filming said they were filming so I wouldn’t beat them up (I’m 5’0” and the person was begging to be left alone)…I actually had to ask the person how they would feel to have their hardest moment in their life filmed and invaded by some stranger when they should be able to just focus on what the next steps are to finding a new normal. There’s got to be something they can do to bring some balance between respecting people’s privacy and recording wrongdoing.

All I asked was what you meant by “actual Canadian”…were you thinking I’m not Canadian, pointing out that Sam isn’t Canadian? I’m just trying to be on the same page as you. I would also never expect people to organically know the charter of rights and freedoms (though I do think more time should be spent on them in school) or section 494 of the criminal code. Since I do, and therefore have knowledge that both could be applicable in a situation like this, I put the specific article numbers in so people who are curious can look into it themselves if they want. So many retail employees commit wrongful arrests thinking they’re protected by the law, and so many people don’t understand that they can conduct citizens arrests. Just because people don’t know something doesn’t mean they can’t be provided information.

When they arrived, I presented them each with their ticket and suggested they go to the kiosk for snacks and drinks. When the end credits rolled and we were leaving, chatting about the movie, the conversation suddenly took a turn towards money for the tickets. I struggled to convince them that it was a gift to them and we were simply celebrating a new Star Wars movie release. The atmosphere was thick enough to cut and about half of them left in a mood. The folks who brought their own snacks and drinks in oversized coats - I kid you not - didn’t argue about getting a free ticket to see a movie.
