Taking into comparison the fanfic on the video, you can definetly have a gut feeling that the John Cena story was more than likely made out of joke, ain't no way it was serious if it didnt had the "I cant see John Cena" or "AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENAAA", that hints that the fic was made to not be taken seriously. Its hard to distinguish bad fanfics with joke ones, but i guess the best guess when a fanfic is bad, is if they try to make it serious , but with poor grammar, plotholes, extremely short chapters and so on. To be honest, i think many if not, most begin their journey with a vague idea of how to write a story and as such don't have all the ideas they want to put into the story

horrifying forces of nature is right i have read some fucked up shit on ao3 and i've also read fics that took days to get through and gave me entirely new perspectives on life. there's a fic which inspired me to learn piano (im quite good now), fics where i learned communication and emotional skills that i wasn't taught by my parents, fics which taught me self-love and self-improvement, and also fics which made me want to pour bleach directly into my brain. fortunately, the tagging system means you can actually avoid the awful ones if you need to, unlike wattpad. i wouldn't be studying chemistry if not for ao3, but also i'd be able to keep a straight face in maths when there's an [a, b, 0] vector. so, yk, pros and cons.

But nothing stays with you like the fic that taught you what snuff meant. I didn't need that knowledge at 11, ao3 has a tagging system that is godsent comparatively.

i love ao3. one of the best and most touching pieces of writing i've read was a star trek fanfiction about a character that was featured in like 10 episodes of what is often considered the worst st installment. the way the author handled topics of mental health, recovery, and self-acceptance, while balancing it with a beautiful love story... and managing to create an elaborate backstory and interesting characterization for such an obscure character... made me legit cry.

ao3 is so much better than wattpad. the literature on that website is so much better than any story on wattpad.

I completely agree! Fanfiction is viewed as a huge joke, and a lot of people forget (despite it being in the name) that fanfiction is just fiction made by fans of certain franchises and series. And that's all it is. It's just taking fletched-out universes and using them as a base to create. The community has contracted such a bad stigma due to cringe culture and the contents of just some of the fanfiction. And like, I don't think all fanfiction is the best. There are fanfiction and fan content in general that are inappropriate, contain straight-up illegal, or otherwise problematic concepts. But the toxic part of the community shouldn't represent it as a whole, ya know? Anyway, great points! And I agree, do not make fanfiction about real people.
