I've also wondered why the various groups in these satellite countries are not seeing this as a golden opportunity to make their move. You don't have to be a battlefield expert to know that Russia is much, much, much weaker today then they were a year ago and far less able to help put down a rebellion anywhere else. I cannot tell you if it would work long term, but your chances have to be much better now then they will be two years from now after Russia has been defeated in Ukraine, but has had some time to rebuild.

UA was trained by a large group of western countries, who banded together to bring western military doctrine to the UA in 2014. The army you see today is a reflection of that commttment by Ukrainians to become a modern fighting force, with the focus, discipline and respect required to adopt NATO standards. UA tropps have been trained out of country by a large number of militaries. The UK is hosting what we call ' basic training ' for new recuits, to get a large number up to speed fast. They also have high level training for other specialties.

I would still not recommend old soviet tactics even when done correctly they take huge casualties in exchange for overrunning the enemy. The fact US knew how the Russians were able to fight using their doctrine and equipment expected them to do way better. Turns out should have taken corruption reports more seriously. As former US Infantry Officer my first clue to how bad the Russians were was Ukraine drone use over their forces. All Russian movements should have been under cover of electronic counter measure units to jam all communications. I did see one video on Ukrainian forces having to wait till Russian Jamming ending to launch their drones so the Russians were partially trying to do it.

The report called it “state of the art”, and more or less a priceless gift because it meant the Russians completely lost their secure communications capability in that region. That's textbook Blitzkrieg maneuver warfare. You rotate troops while advancing. The key is to constantly maintain contact with the retreating enemy, don't let them dig in and rest. You reload, refuel and rest while the second unit continues to advance, then change places and repeat. Scouts always look for the weakest place in the defense, you put the center of mass at that point, break the line and attack their rear. Two things are important : flexibility and a decentralized command structure. Officers have to take matters in their own hands and exploit an opportunity when it arises, without waiting for orders from the superiors. That's called Mission-type tactics. You need well trained officers and NCOs to perform that. Of course, logistics is crucial. The main weapon is the speed, and that requires constant resupply.

@@johntynan8161 There was fighting during the Chechen war in winter. However not sure what the climate is there in winter. The Korean was seen fighting in winter (and in snowy conditions). Afghanistan can also have surprisingly harsh winters. There must have been combat in snowy conditions there as well.

My money is betting on Ukraine over the winter. Russia doesn't equip its soldiers properly.

I'd dispute the budget argument. In this war you cannot understate how important western military aid to Ukraine was and still is. Up until now they have received more than 80 billion USD in financial and military aid (the former mostly went to purchase of more weapons), which is more than Russia annual defence spending.

But that's the same rats arse the Russian looked into: Logistics and war economy are the last thing people consider. It doesn't mean that Ukrainians aren't good soldiers, far from it, but people need to see the whole picture. Fun Fact: They (the Russians) had a good teacher in that. Logistics in Prussia was seen as something third rate officers would do, which led to the shortages in WWI and WWII Germany suffered. On the other Hand, the Ukrainians took the right lessons from the right people, the US for logistics and Prussia for tactics. How the spearhead in the Charkiw region pummelled Russian rear guard and supply posts, very much reminds me of WWI Stormtroopers (the OG Blitzkrieg boys).

You don't need a huge budget when your enemy (Russians) keep leaving you large amounts of weapons and equipment. These can immediately, or after some small refurbishment, be turned back against their former owners!

If the west hadn't supplied UA with so much (infantry) firepower in the first weeks, then they wouldn't have won the Battle for Kiev, which in turn would've resulted in far worse morale for UA's soldiers, while it would've benefited Russian morale. And low morale is a key factor why Russian soldiers ran so fast in Charkiv. Also, you have to look at what exactly US is capturing: Mostly MBTs and IFV. Now these are no slouch, but you're rarely going to find artillery there. However, artillery is the key in striking Russia's logistics and command points. This is where western deliveries come back, again. (HI)MARS, CAESAR and PzH2000 have far longer range and better accuracy to their Russian counterparts, which makes counter-battery nigh impossible, and lets UA reliably suffocate Russia's forces by depriving them of Ammo, Food, Fuel and CnC. Without the help from the west, Ukraine, no matter how valiant their soldiers have fought and are fighting, would've lost. That much is a fact.

Not a bad idea, but I don't know if the Ukrainians need them. Between captured orc engineering equipment and their own, plus the Ukrainians' MacGyvering skills, rivers haven't slowed them down much. I also doubt the orcs' weapons being accurate enough to destroy the crossing points like the Ukrainians have done to them. I believe winter will be Ukraine's ally.

I mean, Ukraine doesn’t have anything like that right now and would certainly need to be trained in Britain full time on something so alien before taking them over to Ukraine, but they would totally be of great benefit on the battlefield for fast manoeuverability. Sure they are quite loud, but their ability to go from land to water on the flatlands of Ukraine would be incredibly helpful. Ukraine has many rivers in crossing them can be very treacherous right now, so using a hovercraft to get from one side to the other and move across potentially landmine areas in greater safety would be great for personnel. Even just three could make a good difference for a battalion or two.

The subtle difference is, the orcs never had any help from the Ukrainian farmers. The Ukrainian farmers will support the Ukrainian Armed Forces with their tractors to pull out tanks stuck in the mud and other vehicles.

NATO forces have been traing in Ukraine since 2014, where on earth id you get the 5% figure? The reason UA is doing so well is the training. Yes they are highly motivated and defending their homeland, but honestly the molotov cocktails really didn't materialize on the battlefield.

During the American Revolution, the American troops we're unable to stand and fight against the professional British troops in a conventional fight. They lacked training, supplies, and equipment, save for what they could scrounge. When France allied with them, the Americans got Charleville muskets and proper uniforms. A Prussian, "Baron von Steuben", took 100 American sergeants and trained them thoroughly in European linear tactics. Those 100 went out and trained all the regiments in the American army. Soon they were the equal of any army in Europe. The Ukrainians are on a similar path. They are learning as fast as they can. They get more skilled at Western maneuver warfare by the month. The Russians get people too poor to escape their conscription. Their nearly complete lack of training is not a plus.
