I am just waiting for the day AMD releases 16 core CCDs to the desktop market...and for vcache to be be incorporated by default to all CPUs.
@Gen0cidePTB
@Gen0cidePTB 2 місяці тому
Not happening this decade. Probably not happening until node sizes hit a wall. AMDs chiplet tech and pricing is reliant on CCDs themselves being cheap, which means they have to have high yields. Look at Intel's pre-Meteor Lake 16 core pricing If you need help seeing how expensive it is to make a 16 core monolithic (single chiplet) die. If AMD wanted to make 16 cores the new normal it would put two CCDs on each chip. Cheaper to make for nearly the same performance.
@jamegumb7298

@@Gen0cidePTB We'll definitely have 16-core CCDs in Zen 6 in 2026, and while not all of those processors will have stacked cache, some will. You might have to wait until 2027 for the X3D variants.
@Gen0cidePTB
@Gen0cidePTB 2 місяці тому
@@selohcin They said that about Zen 5 for a long time and it turned out that we got the same size CCX and CCDs. The main reason I don't see us having 16 core CCDs is that there's a large market that doesn't need more than 8 and TSMC means they are going with mature processes with good yields (so won't be disabling many CCDs to 8 cores). Starting the bottom of the range at 16 core processors, even Zen C ones, is way too high for the school systems and ultrabook laptops they also have to make CPUs for.

@@You_Do_Care No, they announced they were stepping away from high end consumer GPUs. Their instinct range of professional GPUs are $10K a card and frankly incredibly fast. @deilusi
@deilusi 2 місяці тому
zen5 is another tick, so bigger change inside cores. IPC change should be firmly higher than zen4/6, which should be tock, in tick-tock process. they are changing 2 things that give AMD a) lower latencies (interconnect method) b) lower power usage (bridges) double digit is guaranteed, as zen4 was ~8-15%. I assume it will be around 19% total, with few instructions really at 30+%, thanks to interconnect. we should see l1/l2/l3/ram speeds jump, while delays drop sharply. In general 66% on multicore should not be out of the question, even if IPC will be ca. 20%. single core will not be more than 20% though. IMHO stuff like AVX should get a really wild bump.

You can look at the overclocking leaderboards in HWBot, a 12600k at 6.5GHz is scoring high 2500s in cinebench R23 single core test, meanwhile a zen 4 7700x at 7ghz is just getting low 2400s in cinebench r23 single core. Yeah, I'm looking to do a new top end build with the ROG Crosshair X670E extreme and a MSI Suprim liquid X 4090. I like Intel, but it's stupid to spend the money on a MOBO this expensive when it's about to be obsolete. The 14900k is the last i9 to use the LGA1700 socket, so I'd have nowhere to go with the MOBO, and I'd have to buy a new one while trying to sell it after it's outdated. That's why I plan on going AM5, so I can get a cheap/inexpensive CPU like the 7800X3D as a placeholder that still has decent Performance, and then upgrade to something like an 9900X3D/9950X3D at the end of this year. I can get decent Performance now with the 7800X3D and not feel like I'm gimping my system or wasting money on am outdated board, and then get killer gaming performance later in the year. While the 7800x3d may not perform up the with the 14900k, it's still good for gaming which is my primary use, and the 8900x3d should close the gap and be an amazing all around CPU with decent Performance out of the box and sipping power without turning into a mini sun. And I can run liquid cooling on the 7800x3d and it will be compatible with the zen 5 chip as well. Gonna be my first AMD spec machine I've ever owned. I feel like the x3D CPUs are really awesome but…they are quite expensive. And someone spending that kind of money on a CPU likely is not using 1080p anymore. Far more likely to use 1440 or 4K at this point. And isn’t it true that as the resolution scales up, you get diminishing returns from the 3D v cache CPUs?
@gruiadevil
@gruiadevil 2 місяці тому
There's a reason why powerful gaming CPU-s exist: 1) You need it to hit your desired FPS. If the R5 7600 can only do 100 FPS in your favorite game, and the R7 7800x3D can do 140FPS, and you want 140 FPS because you have a 144Hz Screen (even if it's 4K) and you want to fully take advantage of your screen, than you "need" the more expensive chip. 2) Future-proofing. The R5 7600 might not be able to hit 60 FPS in 2028 in some games, but the 7800x3D will. In 2030, maybe the 7800x3D won't be able aswel to hit 60 FPS. But you didn't upgrade your CPU for 2 more years. Time in which you either saved up money, or simply ... not spent money. 3) As you increase resolution, you're more reliant on your GPU. Yes. But if your GPU can do 140 FPS in 4K, but your CPU can't ... now you have a bottleneck. An RTX5090 should be able to do 140FPS in 4K in any game that we have today on the market (Usually it's the console cinematic games that are demanding) So. Yeah. If you spend more on your CPU, you need to start spending 3x more on your GPU. A 450$ CPU, should be paired with at least a 1500$ GPU

Also I might add, 3DVCache CPUs have very good 1% and .1% Lows along with allot of indie, simulation and spaghetti code video games get an fps boost like a rocket. Chips are trending toward more cache even on regular chips. I would rather a smooth slower performance with an older 3D CPU in modern applications say years from now... then not being able to run or a very bad experience doing so. I'm pretty sure that the performance and capacity of ddr4 will be fine for years to come... it's not like we're going from 32-64mb to 4gb ram in only afew years. The more interesting ???s are what instruction sets, cpu microcode, security measures or neural processing will be required to run windows in 7 years.

You would need at least 4GB HBM for there to be a point in on die memory, and that's gonna cook the CPU if you lay it on top like V-Cache is, as it will be as big as the whole die. someone needs to go back to school and learn maths - my 7950X has a max boost of 5.8Ghz so an increase to 6.0Ghz is 3.4% clock increase, IPC is estimated at 20-30% with a few out layers be higher and lower depending on workload, then you have the memory bandwidth increase from 6000-6400 which 6.7% and will only effect the non-X3D variants if they use the faster memory but that will only effect memory sensitive workloads. So at best we are looking at around 30% total because clock increase and memory bandwidth are too small to significantly effect the total uplift. But don't get me wrong, I will be first in line to get a 9950X upgrade from my 7950X because that 30% at bets is enough to warrant that for me, obviously after a BIOS update !

AMD looking to be hyper competitive with their Ryzen CPUs. I haven't seen the consumer CPU market this competitive before, which I am not complaining about. The more competition, the better for the consumer. I just wish I could say the same thing about the Radeon brand. I hope AMD can turn things around for Radeon with RDNA 4. The CPU market seems very competitive, which is good. However, the consumer GPU market is a ghost town. There is hardly any competition there currently, and due to the lack of competition, everything has been rapidly going downhill.

Can someone tell me about the AVX-512. Wasn't that what Intel had then dropped not to return. Is that what AMD is adding (back) to their x86 architecture? Intel destroyed the ability to watch UHD 4K discs because they removed that and SGX. There is also AV2. I'm confusion.
@Gen0cidePTB
@Gen0cidePTB 2 місяці тому
AVX is a pro feature only now. It's not dropped, just disabled, because it was one of the primary things removed to make E cores smaller (512 bit registers take up a lot of space), and having only some cores support some instructions would have made it incompatible with Windows 10, which isn't even fully compatible with E-cores anyway (it treats all cores the same). AMD has supported AVX since bulldozer iirc, and 512 since Zen 4.

Why compare X3D model to non X3D. Also notice the SMT2 which could mean three threads per core, which is great for some tasks, but likely a lot less so with others, so 30% could be true in some very specific situations, like cinebench, but less so in games. For instance currently SMT is pretty useless in games if you already have enough cores.
