I’ve met Danny before, I was filming a documentary about dementia and the person I was documenting was Danny. It was going okay at first and then he started tearing his skin off and teleporting. To make the floor thing more logical: in Germany we call it „Erdgeschoss“ which means earth- floor and the first floor we would call „erstes Obergeschoss“ meaning first upper floor. I think that makes a bit more sense, but also „Geschoss“ can also be translated as „something you shoot“ so idk what’s up with that.

For instance in hotels and apartment blocks the bottom floor is usually an area where you only find lobbies, reception desks, security check points, post boxes, car garages and sometimes shop fronts. That's when i think it makes sense for the 1st floor to be one up from the bottom floor, then the rooms/offices on the 1st floor can be numbered 101 to 199, 2nd floor 201 to 299 etc which a lot of them do. But then if its a mall or a high school, or any building where the bottom floor is used in the same way as the floors above it, then i cant argue that "ground floor" makes more sense than "first floor"

i dont have an issue with calling the first floor the "ground floor" because that still makes sense, however, the floor immediately above the ground floor is the second floor. it is the second floor you go to, calling it the first floor makes no sense when you were just on a floor.

We call the first floor "the ground floor" in Australia, and I 100% agree with Danny about this. I'm recovering from an ankle injury and when I was finally able to drive myself to the hospital, which has multi-level car parking, I thought of the different floors as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, so I would get tripped up when coming back to my car and believing I was on the 2nd floor when I was "actually" on the 1st floor.

Protip: if you live in a building with only two floors you don't need to worry about the first/zero floor nonsense cuz you can just call it upstairs and downstairs. Source: Canadian

I think the floor thing makes more sense when you think about how a lot of tall buildings are structured, with the bottom floor being used as a reception or whatever, while the other floors will be more the usual functionality of a building. For example, not having hotel rooms on the bottom floor, hence the floor up from that being the 'first floor ' that actually gets used as hotel rooms. Even as a Brit though, I don't think about that for regular houses. I'd still refer to the second level of a normal house as the second floor without thinking lol

In my country usually buildings only counts residential / comercial rooms as floors. It’s ground (called T, which usually don’t have said rooms), garage ( call G1, G2 if there’s more than one garage floor), a play area (called P, if the building has one) and then when the rooms start we have 1, 2, 3 and etc

3:02 the reason we calk it the ground floor is because then it makes sense when u get basements and stuff but i agree first floor does make more sense if theres no basement, it took me years to understand it though lol

About ground/first floor: here in Germany we start with counting the floors like the brits, but we say „Erdgeschoss“ (ground floor) because it’s the same level as the ground but then we call it „erste Etage“ (first level) „Etage“ meaning that it’s higher than the ground. tbh I thought it was kinda confusing as a child but now it does make sense to me. In elevators this is especially useful. Most of the time you have a lobby on the „Erdgeschoss“ and then the other levels there are the things you need to go to. So here in Germany you usually also have one or more „Untergeschosse“ (underground level) so for example an elevator would go from -1 to 0 to 1 to 2 and so on. so the ground level would be called zero which makes it easier to name the other levels idk if this is understandable but that’s how it works in Germany and I think in other European countries as well

Here in Canada, it's Ground Floor or First Floor or Main Floor, then it is the 2nd floor, 3rd, and so on. Usually skipping 13. Occasionally skipping any number containing a 4 So. There's that

So, in regards to the floor thing, I agree with Danny completely. Like Ground floor is also the first floor. The weird thing Ive noticed in Canada however, is that you get a mix of both. It's all over and it's confusing as hell EXCEPT with you only have numbers. I've seen Main floor, Ground Floor, floor 2 in one elevator once. LIKE WTF IS THAT. Like UK and US gotta agree on one thing cos they're confusing Canada on this. Our poor elevator makers don't know what to do.
