All information derived for this film is taken from the official IAC report.
Answers to most frequent questions:
1. Why didn't they execute an ILS approach?
This airport is dedicated for both passenger and army use. This is why it wasn't equipped with ILS but had other approach systems, that weren't utilised by the crew. In the beginning of 2019, ILS-2700 and DVOR-DME were set up.
2. Was the runway lit up?
It has been lit up but the lights were extremely dated and weren't bright enough.
Noteworthy comments:
1. It's an army airfield and hence weather conditions most likely weren't measured properly. Most people believe that bottom cloud level was measured visually by an operator.
2. I was driving near that place on that night. I was in shock since I have never seen anything like it before. The clouds were so low that even trees were covered by them in half. It seemed that you can touch them and they were maximum 15m above ground.
3. The whole crew establishment of the past, where navigator is the main element in the team, has led to such disasters many times. It's not even a pint of beer that caused this, but the way everyone was dependent on navigators. In the end, this is what you get.
As a result of this crash investigation, following individuals were put in jail:
- Rosaviation deputy official
- Head of Petrozavodsk airport
- Weather forecasting chief executive
* All 3 were released soon after under amnesty.
